ISSN 0486-4271 Inter national Organization forSucculent Plant Study Organización Internacional paraelEstudio de Plantas Suculentas Organisation Internationale de Recherche sur les Plantes Succulentes Inter nationale Organisation für Sukkulenten-Forschung Repertorium Plantarum Succulentarum LXII (2011) Ashort history of Repertorium Plantarum Succulentarum The first issue of Repertorium Plantarum Succulentarum (RPS) was produced in 1951 by Michael Roan (1909−2003), one of the founder members of the International Organization for Succulent Plant Study (IOS) in 1950. It listed the ‘majority of the newnames [of succulent plants] published the previous year’. The first issue, edited by Roan himself with the help of A.J.A Uitewaal (1899−1963), was published for IOS by the National Cactus & Succulent Society,and the next four (with Gordon RowleyasAssociate and later Joint Editor) by Roan’snewly formed British Section of the IOS. For issues 5−12, Gordon Rowleybecame the sole editor.Issue 6 was published by IOS with assistance by the Acclimatisation Garden Pinya de Rosa, Costa Brava,Spain, owned by Fernando Riviere de Caralt, another founder member of IOS. In 1957, an arrangement for closer cooperation with the International Association of Plant Taxonomy (IAPT) was reached, and RPS issues 7−22 were published in their Regnum Ve getabile series with the financial support of the International Union of Biological Sciences (IUBS), of which IOS remains a member to this day.Issues 23−25 were published by AbbeyGarden Press of Pasadena, California, USA, after which IOS finally resumed full responsibility as publisher with issue 26 (for 1975). Gordon Rowleyretired as editor after the publication of issue 32 (for 1981) along with Len E. -

FLORA of ST. JOHN, U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS By

INTRODUCTION The island of St. John, formerly known as St. Jan, (Map 1), belongs to the Virgin Island group, a natural appendage of the Puerto Rican bank. The islands making up the Virgin Islands group (St. Thomas, St. John, Tortola, Virgin Gorda, Anegada, and St. Croix) and Puerto Rico (Vieques, Culebra and Puerto Rico) form a geographical, geological, and biological province with many shared natural features. St. John, like most of the other Virgin Islands has a mountainous topography with very small inter mountain valleys and coastal plains. The island has an approximate area of 31 square kilometers, with an eastwest axis of 11 kilometers, and a maximum northsouth axis of approximately 5 kilometers. The highest point on the island is Bordeaux Mountain which reaches 387 m in elevation. The island has no permanent rivers and possesses only a few intermittent streams, which either flow toward the north or south coasts. For the most part, the soil is volcanic in origin and welldrained, with depths to bedrock ranging from 25 to 50 cm. Columbus discovered and named the Virgin Islands on his second trip to the New World in 1493. On November 14th, Columbus and his crew anchored on an island which he named Santa Cruz (St. Croix later by the French). They found the island to be inhabited by Carib Indians, but they did not record how densely populated the island was. -

In addition to tree, sapling, and seedling measurements, the data collected included detailed descriptions of percent cover of vascular plants in four height layers (0–0.6 m, >0.6–1.8 m, >1.8–4.9 m, and >4.9 m) and percent ground cover. -

These phylogenies sample 666 plants representing 532 of the 1438 species recognized in the family. All four subfamilies, all nine tribes, and 69% of currently recognized genera of Cactaceae are sampled. We found strong support for three of the four currently recognized subfamilies, although -

Botanical Sciences 90 (2): 97-108, 2012 BOTÁNICA ESTRUCTURAL EL HÁBITO Y LA FORMA DE CRECIMIENTO EN LA TRIBU CACTEAE (CACTACEAE, CACTOIDEAE) MONSERRAT V ÁZQUEZ-SÁNCHEZ1, 3, TERESA TERRAZAS1 Y SALVADOR ARIAS2 1Departamento de Botánica, Instituto de Biología, Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México 2Jardín Botánico, Instituto de Biología, Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México 3Autor para la correspondencia: [email protected] Resumen: Los términos ‘forma de crecimiento’ y ‘hábito’ con frecuencia se usan como sinónimos; sin embargo, su asignación a las diferentes especies resulta problemática en algunos grupos taxonómicos debido a la diversidad morfológica; éste es el caso en Cactaceae, particularmente en la tribu Cacteae de la subfamilia Cactoideae. Se estudió la morfología del tallo de 102 especies (26 como para hacer una distinción clara entre los términos ‘hábito’ y ‘forma de crecimiento’ para Cactaceae y discutir sus diferencias respecto a los conceptos de forma de vida y arquitectura vegetal. Con base en las observaciones y mediciones para 102 especies de Cacteae se reconocieron cuatro formas de crecimiento (cilíndrica, columnar, globosa y globosa-deprimida). Por su tamaño y lon- gevidad no es posible utilizar los términos ‘árbol’ o ‘hierba’ para las especies de Cacteae. El 12% de las especies estudiadas de esta Acharagma roseana, Ferocactus pilosus y Thelocactus bicolor. However, their assignment to different species is problematic because of the morphological diversity occurring in some taxonomic groups, as is the case in Cactaceae, particularly in the tribe Cacteae of the Cactoideae subfamily.
