Se aceptan con- tribuciones en aspectos teóricos y aplicados en: Botánica, Zoología, Ecología, Etnobiología, Paleobiología, Antropología, Arqueología, Geología, Hidrología, Forestales, Agricultura, Climatología, Arquitectura de estos ecosistemas así como; proyectos de conservación, de- sarrollo, cambio climático, educación y material legal, cultural e histórico referidos a zonas áridas. Dentro de este contexto, la problemática del agua, resultante del uso inadecuado así como de procesos de sequías cada vez más intensas y recurrentes que sumadas afectan la calidad y disponi- bilidad de este valioso recurso, es una de las preocupaciones mas importantes para la humanidad actualmente y son justamente estos temas los que aborda el presente número de nuestra revista, presentando en total ocho trabajos que desde distintos enfoques brindan aportes para lograr el uso sostenible de este recurso, probablemente el más escaso en las próximas décadas dentro de un escenario de cambio climático. Siete de los trabajos se enfocan en la problemática del recurso hídrico: 3 relacionados a su gestión (Konrad C. et al.; Calvo S. et al; Abraham E. et al.; 2 referidos a las sequías (Torres L. et al., Ve- negas F. et al.), y otros 2 relativos a la humedad (Galán A. et al.; Monterroso A. et al.), Otros ocho temas incluidos en este número están relacionados a los recursos biológicos vegetales como son: la diversidad (Hernandez J., Lameed G. et al.); la ecofisiología (Fasola T. et al., Nava- rro M. et al., Karlin M. et al., a, b); cultivos in vitro (Garza R. et al.), y ciclos forrajeros (Cabanna J. et al.) y los no menos importantes temas de erosión de suelos (López J. et al.) e indicadores de desertificación (Ibañez N. y DammanG.) Nuestro artista del desierto invitado es el gran poeta español Miguel Hernández, hijo de cam- pesinos que entre otros oficios fue pastor de cabras durante su niñez. Su poema “Aceituneros” derivó en que se dijera tenía el color de una aceituna. A poco más de cien años de su nacimiento (1910- 2010) años, un pequeño homenaje de esta humilde revista de los desiertos, que haciendo honor a su nombre: sabe esperar. El director Director’s letter Desertification and climate change constitute problems that when combined have local and global impact, with dangerous economic, social and environmental effects. Within this context, the problems related to water that result from its inadequate use, as well as from ever-increasing and recurrent drought processes, both of which affect the quality and availability of this valuable resource, are one of the current and most important issues that humanity is facing. The present issue is devoted to exactly these themes, presenting eight studies that contribute insights into the sustainable use of this resource. A resource that will probably become the scarcest resource in the coming decades under a climate change scenario. Seven

Darwiniana, nueva serie 9(1): 39-54. Malpighiaceae constitutes a family of 77 genera and ca. 1300 species, distributed in tropical and subtropical regions of both hemispheres. They are mainly diversified in the American continent and distributed in a wide range of habitats and altitudinal gradients. For this reason, this family can be a model plant group to ecological and biogeographical analyses, as well as evolutive studies. In this context, an analysis of distribution, richness, endemism and phylogenetic diversity of Malpighiaceae in natural regions and their altitudinal gradients was undertaken. Malpighiaceae are represented in Colombia by 34 genera and 246 species (19.1% of endemism). Thus, Colombia and Brazil (44 genera, 584 species, 61% of endemism) are the two richest countries on species of this family. The highest species richness and endemism in Colombia is found in the lowlands (0-500 m a.s.l.: 212 species, 28 endemics); only ten species are distributed on highlands (2500-3200 m a.s.l.). Of the Malpighiaceae species in Colombia, Heteropterys leona and Stigmaphyllon bannisterioides have a disjunct amphi-Atlantic distribution, and six other species show intra-American disjunctions.

ABSTRACT We provide an updated list of the vascular epiphytic flora occurring in native environments of Uruguay based on literature review, herbarium specimens, and fieldwork throughout the country. The catalogue provides standardized information for each species, including accepted name, synonyms used within Uruguay, epiphytic category, distribution within the country, habitat, conservation status, observations, and a voucher citation. The effort documented 73 species for the epiphytic flora of Uruguay (3 % of the flora), distributed among 29 genera and 12 families. Bromeliaceae was the richest family (17), followed by Polypodiaceae (16) and Orchidaceae (12). Tillandsia stood out as the most speciose genus with 15 species. Characteristic holoepiphytes was the most diverse ecological category. More than half of the epiphytic species documented for Uruguay (53 %) reach their southernmost geographic distribution in the country, whereas only two mostly epipetric species of Tillandsia — T. arequitae and T. uruguayensis — are endemic to the country. Almost half of the epiphytic species found are presently under categories of threat of extinction, with 60 % of them occurring in national protected areas. Both the richest epiphytic families and the predominance of characteristic holoepiphytes coincide with findings from floristic and ecological studies previously carried out in humid subtropical regions.     Part B DISPLAY ROCKERIES 4. THE TOUR BEGINS! The National Cactus & Succulent Botanical Garden and Research Centre is located in SECTOR 5, PANCHKULA. This sector is being developed as the main City Centre of this modern township. The garden is at the northern end of the City Park, covering an extensive area of 7.4 acres. It is approachable by road, being about twenty minutes’ drive from the Chandigarh Bus Stand, and practically the same distance from the Chandigarh Airport. The entrance to the garden is situated on a service road, that runs parallel to the main road going from the Fountain Chowk near the HUDA building to the main Panchkula Bus Stand. Coming on the main road from the Fountain Chowk near HUDA building, this side road takes off from the first traffic light. The RECEPTION CENTER (near the main gate) and OFFICE (towards the north and nearer to the service gate) provide the necessary back-up; the latter houses a small LIBRARY of succulent plant literature, and a small LABORATORY is also being developed there.

Only by a constant effort to transcend the limitations of glossaries can a more than partial understanding of wood anatomy and its evolution be achieved. The need for such an effort is most evident in a major group with sufficient wood diversity to demonstrate numerous problems in wood anatomical features. Caryophyllales s.l., with approximately 12 000 species, are such a group. Paradoxically, Caryophyllales offer many more interpretive problems than other ‘typically woody’ eudicot clades of comparable size: a wider range of wood structural patterns is represented in the order. An account of character expression diversity is presented for major wood characters of Caryophyllales. These characters include successive cambia (more extensively represented in Caryophyllales than elsewhere in angiosperms); vessel element perforation plates (non-bordered and bordered, with and without constrictions); lateral wall pitting of vessels (notably pseudoscalariform patterns); vesturing and sculpturing on vessel walls; grouping of vessels; nature of tracheids and fibre-tracheids, storying in libriform fibres, types of axial parenchyma, ray anatomy and shifts in ray ontogeny; juvenilism in rays; raylessness; occurrence of idioblasts; occurrence of a new cell type (ancistrocladan cells); correlations of raylessness with scattered bundle occurrence and other anatomical discoveries newly described and/or understood through the use of scanning electron microscopy and light microscopy.

Dave Palzkill: Biography I was raised on a mixed beef/hog/chicken farm in the hill country of southwest Wisconsin near the former mining town of Mineral Point. I majored in Horticulture and Plant Pathology at the University of Wisconsin - Madison. During my graduate studies I also spent eight months at the University of California - Davis, a time which awakened my interest in the dry west. My dissertation research at Madison focused on the influence of environment on Ca-transport and Ca-related disorders of vegetable crops. I taught Horticulture and Agronomy courses at the University of Arizona for 14 years and conducted research on new/alternative crops for dry regions; primarily jojoba, but also low water-requiring landscape/ornamental plants and mesquite for energy production. Since 1990, I have worked as a consultant on new crops projects (jojoba, chia, lesquerella, mesquite, moringa) in several countries. For the past 15 years, I have also managed a nursery in northwest Tucson specializing in Adenium, but also including lots of Pedilanthus (Lady's Slipper) and miscellaneous cacti., especially small-padded/jointed Opuntioids, which I first fell in love with on travels in various South American countries.
