The oilfield extends to the east and west of the River Trent and lies within Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire respectively, however, the current application only covers the above sites which lie within Nottinghamshire. 1.2 The Gainsborough Oilfield is situated in part beneath the town of Gainsborough and part beneath the land forming Beckingham Marshes. The Gainsborough field commenced production in 1959 and is one of the larger onshore oilfields when the combined structure of Gainsborough and Beckingham fields are taken into account. 1.3 For the purposes of this report, reference to ‘the Oilfield’ should be taken as meaning those parts of the field lying to the west of the River Trent which comprise of wellsites 5, 8, 11, 36, 41 and 59. 2.0 Existing Conditions Local Highway Network 2.1 Access to the operational centre at Wellsite 5 is off the A631, just over half a kilometre west of the outskirts of Gainsborough. The A631 runs between Bawtry (and on to the A1) and Beckingham in the west, through Gainsborough, joining with the A15 at Caenby Corner. From here, the A15 runs north to the M180, or south to the A46 at Lincoln. Wellsite Locations 2.2 The well sites are situated on the western bank of the River Trent, 500m west of the centre of Gainsborough and some 2km southeast of Beckingham. The oilfield consists of five outlying well sites, which are connected to a Gathering Centre (Well Site 5) by means of underground pipelines. Well sites 5, 8, 11 2 BSP Consulting MWR/12170 Gainsborough Oilfield Transport Statement and 41 are located to the north of the A631, with sites 36 and 59 located to the south of the road. The location of the sites is shown on drawing numbers GBHO- 01A and GBHO-02A, located in Appendix A. Wellsite 5 2.3 Wellsite 5 lies approximately 300m to the north of the A631 and 175m to the west of the River Trent. The site is accessed by a private metalled road running north from the A631, which is gated near to the main road. The access road also serves as access to sites 8, 11 and 41. 2.4 Wellsite 5 is the operational centre for the Gainsborough and Beckingham fields (along with other outlying fields), and there is also a well on this site. A key operation at Wellsite 5 is the separation of oil, gas and water prior to the oil being transported to the oil refinery at Immingham. The Gainsborough and Beckingham oilfields are connected to Wellsite 5 by a system of underground pipelines which deliver produced fluids, consisting of a mixture of oil, gas and water to the plant. The produced fluids from the outlying fields are delivered by road tanker. 2.5 The majority of the gas separated from the produced fluids at Wellsite 5 is transferred to Gainsborough Wellsite 1 on Corringham Road Industrial Estate by underground pipeline, where it is used to produce electricity. 2.6 Water which is extracted from the mixture during the oil/gas separation process is pumped to Wellsite 11 where it is re-injected into the reservoir to maintain reservoir pressure. 2.7 The buildings at Wellsite 5 consist of a small office complex together with numerous smaller buildings which house electrical equipment and serve as workshops and stores etc. Wellsite 8 2.8 Wellsite 8 is located approximately 100m north of the A631, accessed via a track from the main site access. All produced fluids are transported to Wellsite 3 BSP Consulting MWR/12170 Gainsborough Oilfield Transport Statement 5 by an underground pipeline. Wellsite 11 2.9 Wellsite 11 is located approximately 700m north of the A631, and is accessed from a track which joins a roadway running along the eastern bank of the Beckingham Main Drain. This roadway connects to Old Trent Road to the north and to the main access serving Wellsite 5 to the south. This site includes an active water re-injection well. Wellsite 36 2.10 Wellsite 36 is located approximately 50m to the south of the A631, and is accessed via an access road running south from the A631. The site is used for oilfield monitoring purposes. Wellsite 41 2.11 Wellsite 41 is situated approximately 400m to the north of the A631, being accessed by the main access road which runs north from the A631 and then west from Wellsite 5. Wellsite 41 is an active site, with all produced fluids being transported to Wellsite 5 by underground pipeline. Minor amounts of gas produced by the field at Wellsite 5 are piped to Wellsite 41 and vented via a stack. Wellsite 59 2.12 Wellsite 59 is located approximately 100m south of the A631, with access provided via the access road to the south of the A631 which runs past Wellsite 36. This site is used for oilfield monitoring purposes. Oilfield Operations 2.13 Oil is currently extracted from the Wellsites 5, 8 and 41. Oil is brought to the surface by use of beam pumps, commonly known as nodding donkeys. The nodding donkeys operate 24 hours a day, 365 days a year apart from routine or breakdown maintenance. The oil mixture is pumped to Wellsite 5 by pipelines. 2.14 Rainwater which is collected in concrete well cellars surrounding the well 4 BSP Consulting MWR/12170 Gainsborough Oilfield Transport Statement heads is collected and periodically pumped to road tanker for transport to Wellsite 5 for processing. No trade effluent or trade effluent drains exist on any of the sites, and all waste materials are removed and transported to Wellsite 5 for appropriate processing and recovery or disposal. 2.15 Wellsite 11 is used as a re-injection well for fluids either processed or produced as part of the separation process at Wellsite 5, whereas Wellsites 36 and 59 are used for oilfield monitoring pruposes. 2.16 The wellsites are unmanned, however those in production receive regular, scheduled visits, whilst sites not producing receive less frequent scheduled monitoring visits. Security fencing is provided at each of the sites, although gates are provided sufficient to allow HGV access to each wellsite. 2.17 Wellsite 5 is the operational centre for a number of oil fields in the East Midlands, and hence it is manned 24 hours per day, 365 days per year. Normal staffing hours are between 0700 and 1700 Monday to Friday and 0700 to 1300 Saturday, with reduced staff outside of these hours to deal with maintenance issues as they arise. 2.18 As all produced fluids are transported between wellsites by underground pipelines, vehicle movements associated with the sites, with the exception of Wellsite 5, are restricted to general maintenance and routine inspection visits. 2.19 Wellsite 5 is the gathering centre for the Gainsborough and Beckingham oilfields, however, as produced fluids from these sites are transported to Wellsite 5 via pipeline, road tanker movements are only generated by deliveries of produced fluids from outlying oilfields and exports of oil to the refinery at Immingham. On average this would consist of 24 tanker movements per day (i.e. 12 trips in and 12 trips out per day). 2.20 In addition to the oil tanker movements above, there will be an additional 20 HGV movements (i.e. 10 trips in and 10 trips out) per 5½ day week, associated with movement of produced water from and to wellsites, suction 5 BSP Consulting MWR/12170 Gainsborough Oilfield Transport Statement tankers cleaning sumps and tank bunds and HGV’s supplying maintenance materials. 2.21 Wellsite 5 is also the base for maintenance staff and operations managers, and trips associated with this equate to around 50 movements per day (i.e. 25 trips in and 25 trips out per day). Trips to and from Wellsite 5 will be significantly lower on Saturday afternoons, Sundays and bank holidays, when trips would be confined to essential safety maintenance, essential oil movements and inspections to ensure that the plant is operating safely and correctly. 2.22 On an average 10 hour working weekday (0700 to 1700), the anticipated number of trips to and from Wellsite 5 would be as follows: Table 1: Vehicular Movements at Wellsite 5 Type of Movement Number of Trips Type of Vehicle Per Day Cars and light goods Staff and Managers 50 vehicles Oil tanker 24 HGV movements Other tanker 4 (i.e.
