Based on twenty months of ethnographic research in the township of Khayelitsha and Cape Town more broadly, this dissertation tracks different post-apartheid approaches to mental health care, which attempt to address these ongoing legacies. Through extensive fieldwork at a community-based organization that provides therapeutic support in isiXhosa, I argue that therapeutic practices by black South Africans de-stabilize and experiment with the normative confines of the psychotherapeutic encounter. Rather than treat individual psyches, therapists’ practices are oriented toward the relational space between generations, a political therapeutic driven by the affective force of the therapists’ own history of struggle toward a different future for black youth, who continue to be marked by the legacies of colonialism and apartheid (what I call “generational care” throughout the dissertation). Second, I argue that normative psychology continues to assume a nuclear family configuration as the norm against which all pathology is judged and therapeutic interventions practiced. I suggest this is particularly so for theories of attachment and infant development, which assume that only a particular configuration of the family—biological parents who unconditionally care for a child in the same physical space as them—is productive of “stable” subjects later in life. By following the history of psychiatry in South Africa, narratives of care from mental health professionals working on the Cape Flats, as well as policy and research agendas, I track how discourses of “cultural difference” evade processes of racialization and consequential racisms in normative psychological theories and interventions. SYNOPSIS: Family therapy with an individual and the relevance of family of origin themes are not new topics in the psychotherapy world. However the richness and depth of Dr Murray Bowen’s family systems and multigenerational approach to working with an individual has only been given scant attention in the Australasian context. Bowen’s theory retains a strong following and solid research attention in parts of North America. In this article the author explores Bowen’s model as it is applied to individual psychotherapy. Distinctions are made with traditional individual therapy where the in-session therapeutic relationship is the vehicle for change in contrast to Bowen’s focus on the natural system of the client’s own family. To illustrate, a case example of the author’s own experience of family of origin coaching when grieving the loss of her parents will be described. This will illustrate the beginnings of reworking a narrow caretaking role amongst siblings to a more multidimensional role of welcoming help from others. The impact of this shift on the author’s clinical work will be explored. When a family systems framework is referred to in the psychotherapy field it is most often thought of as an approach to working with the family group to address a relational problem or a symptom in a child.

Volk Abstract for scholarly and general audiences African American Literature engaged many social and racial issues that mainstream white America marginalized during the pre-civil, and post civil rights era through the use of rhetoric, setting, plot, narrative, and characterization. The use of passing fostered an outlet for many light- skinned men and women for inclusion. This trope also allowed for a closer investigation of the racial division in the United States. These issues included questions of the color line, or more specifically, how light-skinned men and women passed as white to obtain elevated economic and social status. Secondary issues in these earlier passing novels included gender and sexuality, raising questions as to whether these too existed as fixed identities in society. As such, the phenomenon of passing illustrates not just issues associated with the color line, but also social, economic, and gender structure within society. Human beings exist in a matrix, and as such, passing is not plausible if viewed solely as a process occurring within only one of these social constructs, but, rather, insists upon a viewpoint of an intersectional construct of social fluidity itself.

    The Church as a peace broker: the case of the Natal Church Leaders’ Group and political violence in KwaZulu-Natal (1990-1994)1 Michael Mbona 2 School of Religion and Theology, University of KwaZulu-Natal, Pietermaritzburg, South Africa Abstract Moves by the state to reform the political landscape in South Africa at the beginning of 1990 led to increased tension between the Inkatha Freedom Party and the African National Congress in the province of Natal and the KwaZulu homeland. Earlier efforts by the Natal Church Leaders’ Group to end hostilities through mediation had yielded minimal results. Hopes of holding the first general democratic election in April 1994 were almost dashed due to Inkatha’s standoff position until the eleventh hour. This article traces the role played by church leaders in seeking to end the bloody clashes taking place at that time by engaging with the state and the rival political parties between 1990 and 1994. Despite the adoption of new strategies, challenges such as internal divisions, blunders at mediation, and the fact that the church leaders were also “political sympathisers”, hampered progress in achieving peace. While paying tribute to the contribution of other team players, this article argues that an ecumenical initiative was responsible for ending the politically motivated brutal killings in KwaZulu-Natal in the early years of 1990. PREFACE PHILOSOPHY Therapeutic work with families is a recent scientific phenomenon but an ancient art. Throughout human history, designated persons in all cultures have helped couples and families cope, adjust, and grow. In the United States, the interest in assisting families within a healing context began in the 20th century and continues into the 21st. Family life has always been of interest, but because of economic, social, political, and spiritual val- ues, outsiders made little direct intervention, except for social work, into ways of helping family functioning until the 1950s. Now, there are literally thousands of professionals who focus their attention and skills on improving family dynamics and relationships. In examining how professionals work to assist families, the reader should keep in mind that there are as many ways of offering help as there are kinds of families. How- ever, the most widely recognized methods are counseling, therapy, educational enrich- ment, and prevention. The general umbrella term for remediation work with families is family therapy . This concept includes the type of work done by family professionals who identify themselves by different titles, including marriage and family therapists, licensed professional counselors, psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, psychiatric nurses, pastoral counselors, and clergy. Family therapy is not a perfect term; it is bandied about by a number of professional associations, such as the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT), the American Counseling Association (ACA), the American Psychological Association (APA), and the National Association of Social Workers (NASW).

Para ello, se presenta una descripción acerca de su trayectoria pioneros de la terapia familiar, profesional en la que se puntualizan algunos de los aspectos más relevantes historia de la terapia familiar, de sus aportaciones, divididos en tres grandes facetas: 1) su transición dentro terapia del MRI del campo de la psiquiatría norteamericana, 2) su papel como investigador de la comunicación humana y el estudio de la esquizofrenia y 3) investigador y promotor del estudio de la familia. El recorrido culmina enunciando las obras más citadas de Don Jackson, con la intención de que sirvan como guía para acercarse a su pensamiento.
