SYNOPSIS: Family therapy with an individual and the relevance of family of origin themes are not new topics in the psychotherapy world. However the richness and depth of Dr Murray Bowen’s family systems and multigenerational approach to working with an individual has only been given scant attention in the Australasian context. Bowen’s theory retains a strong following and solid research attention in parts of North America. In this article the author explores Bowen’s model as it is applied to individual psychotherapy. Distinctions are made with traditional individual therapy where the in-session therapeutic relationship is the vehicle for change in contrast to Bowen’s focus on the natural system of the client’s own family. To illustrate, a case example of the author’s own experience of family of origin coaching when grieving the loss of her parents will be described. This will illustrate the beginnings of reworking a narrow caretaking role amongst siblings to a more multidimensional role of welcoming help from others. The impact of this shift on the author’s clinical work will be explored. When a family systems framework is referred to in the psychotherapy field it is most often thought of as an approach to working with the family group to address a relational problem or a symptom in a child. -

Benefits, Limitations, and Potential Harm in Psychodrama (Training) © Copyright 2005, 2008, 2010, 2013, 2016 Rob Pramann, PhD, ABPP (Group Psychology) CCCU Training in Psychodrama, Sociometry, and Group Psychotherapy This article began in 2005 in response to a new question posed by the Utah chapter of NASW on their application for CEU endorsement. “If any speaker or session is presenting a fairly new, non-traditional or alternative approach, please describe the limitations, risks and/or benefits of the methods taught.” After documenting how Psychodrama is not a fairly new, non-traditional or alternative approach I wrote the following. I have made minor updates to it several times since. As a result of the encouragement, endorsement, and submission of it by a colleague it is listed in the online bibliography of psychodrama http://pdbib.org/. It is relevant to my approach to the education/training/supervision of Group Psychologists and the delivery of Group Psychology services. It is not a surprise that questions would be raised about the benefits, limitations, and potential harm of Psychodrama. J.L. Moreno (1989 – 1974) first conducted a psychodramatic session on April 1, 1921. It was but the next step in the evolution of his philosophical and theological interests. His approach continued to evolve during his lifetime. To him, creativity and (responsible) spontaneity were central. He never wrote a systematic overview of his approach and often mixed autobiographical and poetic material in with his discussion of his approach. He was a colorful figure and not afraid of controversy (Blatner, 2000). He was a prolific writer and seminal thinker. -

3. Helping Relationship l. Helping relationships Considerable research evidence suggests that the relationship in counseling is the determining factor whether or not counseling is successful. Theories of counseling provide the underlying philosophy and strategies for building and maintaining this relationship. Four key elements in building this relationship are: 1. Human relations core: empathy, respect and genuineness as identified by Carl Rogers. 2. Social influence core: competence, power and intimacy. Expertness, attractiveness, and trustworthiness were identified by Stanley Strong in his social influence model. 3. Skills core: Allen Ivey identified microskills-communication skill units such as attending, inquiry and reflection. 4. Theory core: These help the counselor understand self and interpersonal relationships and skills. They also help to understand the problems of clients and help to choose interventions that are likely to be effective with the identified problems. 2. Psychoanalytic (Sigmund Freud) Freud identified a structure of personality: Id: Unconscious motivation or energy is the id ruled by the pleasure principle. Ego: The ego is controlled by the reality principle Superego: the superego is internalized ethics. Therapy techniques include: Free association Interpretation of dreams and other client material. Transference (projections onto therapist) must be worked through. Countertransference consists of projections of the therapist onto the patient. 3. Neo-Freudians A number of psychoanalysts moved away from Freud's emphasis on the id as the dominant psychological force and placed more emphasis on the ego, including both psychodynamic and sociodynamic forces. Karen Horney: Security is each person's major motivation and the person becomes anxious when it is not achieved. Irrational ways to mend disrupted human relationships may become neurotic needs. -

For children and adolescents, family therapy most often is used when the child or adolescent has a personality, anxiety, or mood disorder that impairs their family and social functioning, and when a stepfamily is formed or begins having difficulties adjusting to new family life.
