2. Nacionalna zgodovina. Grafenauerjevo oziroma Gestrinovo razumevanje na- cionalne zgodovine; koncepti, tradicije, vzori, inovacije, pomen in vpliv na slovenske predstave o lastni preteklosti. 3. Fevdalizem. Grafenauerjevo in Gestrinovo razumevanje zgodovinskega ra- zvoja; njuna obravnava socialnih, gospodarskih, kulturnih in drugih tem med koncem antike in začetkom moderne dobe. 4. Slovenska zgodovina v 19. in 20. stoletju v delih Grafenauerja in Gestrina. 5. It is the most hotly contested border dispute point between the two countries except for the maritime border in Bay of Piran. The area with small villages of Mlini-[krile, Bu`ini and [kodelin is known in the literature as the »area along the Dragonja River«, »the area of double records« or »the case of four villages«. The paper begins by describing rea- sons for the southern border of the Municipality of Piran from geographic and economic aspects. It focuses on changes of borders from the legal aspect between and after World War Two.

Focusing on its multicultural struc- ture and shaping its political, social and religious diversity, the author takes into account the problems of various minority groups in Yugoslavia and the failure of its global minority politics as well. Key words: Kingdom of Yugoslavia, national minorities, minority politics, political organization, education Th e fi rst common state of Southern Slavs was founded in 1918 at the end of WWI. Although it purported to be a national state on the Western European model, it was in fact as multi-national as the defunct empires it has replaced.1 Among the patchwork of nationalities making up its population, were numer- ous national minorities most of whom were non-Slavs. Th ey made up some 12 % of the total population, but not all of them were offi cially recognized as na- tional minorities and the existence of some of them was denied altogether.2 ∗ Zoran Janjetović, Ph. D., Institute for Recent History of Serbia, Belgrade, Serbia 1 Th e state was founded under the name the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes, and was renamed Yugoslavia only in 1929. However, for convenience, we’ll call it simply Yugoslavia throughout this paper. 2 Th e existence of Aromunians in Macedonia and Romanians in Eastern Serbia were acknowl- edged but they were not legally recognized as national minorities.

  • The Contribution of Czech Musicians to Nineteenth- and Early Twentieth-Century Musical Life in Slovenia
The Contribution of Czech Musicians to Nineteenth- and Early Twentieth-Century Musical Life in Slovenia Jernej Weiss Studies so far have not given a thorough and comprehensive overview of the activities of Czech musicians in the musical culture of Slovenia in the 19th and early 20th centuries. This article thus deals with the question of the musical, social and cultural influences of Czech musicians in Slovenia in the period discussed. More precisely: in which areas, how and to what extent did in particular the most important representatives of the Czech musicians in Slovenia contribute? The numerous Czech musicians working in Slovenia in the 19th and early 20th century actively co-created practically all areas of musical culture in Slovenia. Through their acti- vities they decisively influenced the musical-creative, musical-reproductive, musical-peda- gogical and musical-publicist areas, and strongly influenced the transition from a more or less musically inspired dilettantism to a gradual rise in terms of quality and quantity of musical culture in Slovenia. Those well-educated Czech musicians brought to Slovenia the creative achievements of musical culture in Czech lands. Taking into account the prevalent role of Czech musicians in Slovenia, there arises the question whether – with regard to the period in question – it might be at all reasonable to speak of “Slovenian Music History” or better to talk about “History of Music in Slovenia”. It is quite understandable that differences exist between music of different provenances; individual musical works are therefore not only distinguished by their chronological sequence and related changes in style, but also by different geographic or sociological (class, cultural, and even ethnic) backgrounds.1 Yet the clarity of these characteristics varies, for they cannot be perceived in precisely the same way or observed with the same degree of reliability in a musical work.2 In this respect, the national component causes considerable difficulties.

THE POLITICIZATION OF ETHNICITY AS A PRELUDE TO ETHNOPOLITICAL CONFLICT: CROATIA AND SERBIA IN FORMER YUGOSLAVIA Agneza Bozic-Roberson, Ph.D. Western Michigan University, 2001 This interdisciplinary research develops a framework or a model for the study of the politicization of ethnicity, a process that transforms peaceful ethnic conflict into violent inter-ethnic conflict. The hypothesis investigated in this study is that the ethnopolitical conflict that led to the break up of former Yugoslavia was the result of deliberate politicization of ethnicity.

  • The Post Hole Issue 14
The Post Hole Issue 14 3 Nationalism, Archaeology, and Yugoslavia Mauro Rizzetto (mailto:[email protected]) Archaeological theory deals with the way in which material culture is in- terpreted: interpretation allows the archaeologist to make inferences on past societies from simple objects which otherwise would be nothing else than mute finds. As a consequence, the study of past civilisations depends on archaeolo- gists' methods and approaches to material culture. Pure theory, however, is not the only affecting element; politics has always played a significant role in the practice of archaeology, in particular when politi- cal weakness and social unrest have fuelled the growth of nationalist movements. A huge literature has been produced on archaeology and nationalism, and numerous case-studies from around the world point out the relevance of the historical past in the development of a people. The Balkans, namely those countries which once formed the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, is a striking example. There are many reasons why this area can best depict such a widespread and complex phenomenon. First of all, it represents a current situation in a European context. Secondly, it is characterised by complex and variegated forms of ethnic conflict, where archaeology plays (or is forced to play) a significant and often different role from one region to another. Thirdly, such a misuse of the historical and archaeological record is further biased by a misleading theoretical approach. The ethnic composition of former Yugoslavia has often been cause of conflict and political weakness since the Middle Ages. The ephemeral medieval king- doms, often enhanced in modern nationalist historiography, were eventually replaced by the Ottoman and Habsburg Empires in the 15th and 17th centuries respectively and ruled until the end of World War I.

Croatian Political Science Review, Vol. 55, No. 2, 2018, pp. 33-49 33 Original research article Received: 21 August 2017 DOI: 10.20901/pm.55.2.02 Post-Communist Memory Culture and the Historiography of the Second World War and the Post-War Execution of Slovenian Collaborationists OTO LUTHAR Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts Summary This paper aims to summarize the transformations in contemporary Slove- nia’s post-socialist memorial landscape as well as to provide an analysis of the historiographical representation of The Second World War in the Slovenian territory. The analysis focuses on the works of both Slovenian professional and amateur historiographical production, that address historic developments which took place during the Second World War and in its immediate aftermath from the perspective of the post-war withdrawal of the members of various military units (and their families) that collaborated with the occupiers during the Second World War. Keywords: Slovenes, Partisans, Home Guards, Historiography, Memory Introduction The debate on post-communist/post-socialist historical interpretation has become an inseparable part of the new politics of the past across Eastern and Southeastern Europe.
