Darko Friš Somentor: doc. dr. Dragan Poto čnik Maribor, december 2011 2 IZVLE ČEK V mojem magistrskem delu »Vpliv Kulturbunda na nemška društva v Mariboru (1930- 1939)« preu čujem oblikovanje in delovanje krovne organizacije jugoslovanskih Nemcev. Pri tem sem se osredoto čila na delovanje mariborske krajevne skupine SDKB med leti 1930 in 1939. V središ če sem postavila povezovanje nemških društev v krovno organizacijo in probleme, ki so nastali zaradi nadvlade enega izmed manjšinskih društev. THE POLITICIZATION OF ETHNICITY AS A PRELUDE TO ETHNOPOLITICAL CONFLICT: CROATIA AND SERBIA IN FORMER YUGOSLAVIA Agneza Bozic-Roberson, Ph.D. Western Michigan University, 2001 This interdisciplinary research develops a framework or a model for the study of the politicization of ethnicity, a process that transforms peaceful ethnic conflict into violent inter-ethnic conflict. The hypothesis investigated in this study is that the ethnopolitical conflict that led to the break up of former Yugoslavia was the result of deliberate politicization of ethnicity. -

Zarković* Institute for Serbian Culture – Prishtina / Leposavić FANDAS AND OPERATION OF THE AUSTRIA–HUNGARY IN PRIZREN AND PEĆ SANJAK (1900–1905)** Abstract: The author points out the Austro–Hungarian influence on the Catholic Albanians– fandas in Prizren and Peć sanjak in the early 20th century. Austro–Hun- garian activity in this field intensified after the Serbo–Turkish wars and the Congress of Berlin. Violence against the Serbian population had since become more frequent, aided by the fandas that have the support and protection of Roman Catholic priests and Austro-Hungarian diplomats. The Catholic Albanian people commit various forms of zulum over Serbian people, who powerless before them abandoned their properties. A large number of Serbian properties were getting new owners –fandas, that were set- tled with the permission of the beys. The Austria–Hungary, wishing to cause as much disorder as possible, incited the fandas and Mohammedan Albanian people against the Serbian people, in whom they saw the main obstacle to the achievement of their aims and the occupation of these regions. The situation demanded greater involvement of Serbian and Russian diplomacy in protecting the thinned-out Serbian population in Peć and Prizren sanjak. Key words: Serbian people, Albanian people, fandas, Austria–Hungary, Peć san- jak, Prizren sanjak The Serbian population who lived in the area of Old Serbia in the late 19th and early 20th century found themselves in an unenviable position. -
The Post Hole Issue 14
The Post Hole Issue 14 3 Nationalism, Archaeology, and Yugoslavia Mauro Rizzetto (mailto:[email protected]) Archaeological theory deals with the way in which material culture is in- terpreted: interpretation allows the archaeologist to make inferences on past societies from simple objects which otherwise would be nothing else than mute finds. As a consequence, the study of past civilisations depends on archaeolo- gists' methods and approaches to material culture. Pure theory, however, is not the only affecting element; politics has always played a significant role in the practice of archaeology, in particular when politi- cal weakness and social unrest have fuelled the growth of nationalist movements. A huge literature has been produced on archaeology and nationalism, and numerous case-studies from around the world point out the relevance of the historical past in the development of a people. The Balkans, namely those countries which once formed the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, is a striking example. There are many reasons why this area can best depict such a widespread and complex phenomenon. First of all, it represents a current situation in a European context. Secondly, it is characterised by complex and variegated forms of ethnic conflict, where archaeology plays (or is forced to play) a significant and often different role from one region to another. Thirdly, such a misuse of the historical and archaeological record is further biased by a misleading theoretical approach. The ethnic composition of former Yugoslavia has often been cause of conflict and political weakness since the Middle Ages. The ephemeral medieval king- doms, often enhanced in modern nationalist historiography, were eventually replaced by the Ottoman and Habsburg Empires in the 15th and 17th centuries respectively and ruled until the end of World War I. -
ABSTRACT Title of Document: the FURTHEST
ABSTRACT Title of Document: THE FURTHEST WATCH OF THE REICH: NATIONAL SOCIALISM, ETHNIC GERMANS, AND THE OCCUPATION OF THE SERBIAN BANAT, 1941-1944 Mirna Zakic, Ph.D., 2011 Directed by: Professor Jeffrey Herf, Department of History This dissertation examines the Volksdeutsche (ethnic Germans) of the Serbian Banat (northeastern Serbia) during World War II, with a focus on their collaboration with the invading Germans from the Third Reich, and their participation in the occupation of their home region. It focuses on the occupation period (April 1941-October 1944) so as to illuminate three major themes: the mutual perceptions held by ethnic and Reich Germans and how these shaped policy; the motivation behind ethnic German collaboration; and the events which drew ethnic Germans ever deeper into complicity with the Third Reich. The Banat ethnic Germans profited from a fortuitous meeting of diplomatic, military, ideological and economic reasons, which prompted the Third Reich to occupy their home region in April 1941. They played a leading role in the administration and policing of the Serbian Banat until October 1944, when the Red Army invaded the Banat. The ethnic Germans collaborated with the Nazi regime in many ways: they accepted its worldview as their own, supplied it with food, administrative services and eventually soldiers. They acted as enforcers and executors of its policies, which benefited them as perceived racial and ideological kin to Reich Germans. These policies did so at the expense of the multiethnic Banat‟s other residents, especially Jews and Serbs. In this, the Third Reich replicated general policy guidelines already implemented inside Germany and elsewhere in German-occupied Europe. -

Because, how should I put it? . We sort of wor- shipped the Germans . because they brought everything down there to us, and it was free. And we just ate that all up, the knowl- edge that we got from that. We were infatuated . or fascinated, with the German technology. Engulfed within the larger geopolitical and social upheavals of his time, Friedrich experienced the rise of the Third Reich, the proliferation of National Socialism within his community, the large-scale mobilization of his town’s men into Germany’s military forces, his own enlistment into the local Hitler-Jugend, and his hometown’s ultimate obliteration through multiple waves of war and occupation. -
Pomen in Vloga Študijskega Odseka Pri Pokrajinskem Narodnoosvobodilnem Odboru Za Slovensko Primorje 1945-1946
Frana Zwittra (24. februarja 1942) in Prežihovega Voranca januarja 1943.
