The New Jersey Center for the Book is part of the Library of Congress outreach program to bring to each state the great resources of this national treasure.

Programs are open to the public and provide learning opportunities, professional development and symposia. Workshops and special events are designed to augment topics of interest to educators, administrators and library professionals who provide enriched literary experiences for the citizens of New Jersey.

For New Jersey students, the centerpiece is Letters About Literature, a national program that encourages and rewards both reading and writing. New Jersey teachers and students have embraced this program with enthusiasm and success.

The Library of Congress established a national Center for the Book in 1977. New Jersey became the 44th state within the national network of 50 states to join this initiative. The mission of the New Jersey Center for the Book is to create imaginative and varied programs in the state of New Jersey.

The New Jersey Center for the Book serves as a dynamic literary catalyst on the state level to bring together diverse partners to develop and offer programs for the public, librarians, educators and young people.

The mandate of the New Jersey Center for the Book enables it to work as an umbrella resource with private, nonprofi t, public and educational organizations.
