The industry has experienced a general downturn in production, employment and number of operating establishments since the mid-1990s. In this study, the possible determinants of the decline in the forest products industry of Alabama are discussed. Moreover, economic impact analyses are used to investigate how the contribution of the industry to the economy of Alabama has changed since the mid-1990s. Additionally, econometric analyses are employed to estimate the relationship between the decline in the industry and changes in the factors behind the decline. Furthermore, additional econometric analyses are employed to estimate the relationship between economic well-being and forest sector dependence in the counties of Alabama. Results showed that the forest products industry of Alabama has lost many employees, production, mills, and contribution to the economy of the state between 1996 and 2012. There is statistically significant relationship between increases in cost of production and decreases in demand for the forest products and the downturn in the industry. -

~ LIBRARY HORIZONS A Newsletter of The University of Alabama Libraries SPRING 2012, VOL. 27, NO. 1 Brockmann Diaries Make Wonderful Addition to Special Collections UA Libraries has acquired the diaries of Charles Raven Brockmann, advertising manager for the H.W. Wilson publishing company for much of the Great Depression and later the long-time assistant director of the Mecklenburg County Public Library, headquartered in Charlotte, NC. Brockmann (1889-1970) was a committed diarist from his youth until just days before his death. With only a few gaps, the diaries chronicle his daily life through the greater part of the twentieth centur y. The diaries, acquired for UA Libraries by Dean Louis Pitschmann, will be kept in Hoole Special Collections Library. William March (William Edward Campbell)
William March (William Edward Campbell) William March (1893-1954) was a decorated combat veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps in the First World War, a successful businessman, and an influential author of numerous novels and short stories. His literary work draws primarily on two sources: his childhood and youth in Alabama and his war experiences in France. Four of March’s six novels are set in Alabama, as are most of his short stories. March’s Alabama-based works are commonly referred to as the “Pearl County” or “Reedyville” series, after the fictional Alabama locales in which many of them are set. March was born William Edward Campbell on September 18, 1893, in Mobile, Mobile County. March was the second of 11 children born to John Leonard Campbell, an orphaned son of a Confederate soldier and itinerant worker in the lumber towns of south Alabama and the Florida panhandle, and Susan March Campbell, daughter of a well-to- do Mobile family. The Campbells, however, were poor, so William left school at the age of 14 to work in the office of a lumber mill in Lockhart, Covington County. At the age of 16, he moved to Mobile, where he took a job in a law office to earn money for school. He spent a year obtaining his high school diploma at Valparaiso University in Indiana and then studied law for a year at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, Tuscaloosa County. He moved to New York City in 1916 and settled in Brooklyn, taking a job as a clerk with a New York law firm. -

REWRITING THE FRONTIER: MAKING HISTORY IN TUSCALOOSA, ALABAMA by THOMAS CHASE HAGOOD (Under the Direction of Allan Kulikoff) ABSTRACT This dissertation explores the dynamics of white settlement at Tuscaloosa, Alabama and the role of settlers’ written words in mythologizing the nineteenth-century, American frontier. The lived experiences of settlers, captured in individuals’ letters, diaries, deeds, wills, poems and books, tell how they transformed a frontier into the Old South. Over the course of the nineteenth century, however, generations of migrants, storytellers and local writers also blended historical accounts, memories, Native legends and fiction, thereby contributing to the creation of the myths of the American frontier and the early formations of southern identity. Kerrville, Texas (Sept. 24, 2020) – Throughout the country, children are starting a new school year, teachers are sending out their lists of required readings, and parents are beginning to gather books. In some cases, classics like "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn," "The Catcher in the Rye," and "To Kill a Mocking Bird" may not be included in curriculum or available in the school library due to challenges made by parents or administrators. Since 1990, the American Library Association's (ALA) Office for Intellectual Freedom (OIF) has recorded more than 10,000 book challenges. A challenge is a formal, written complaint requesting a book be removed from library shelves or school curriculum. A banning is the removal of those materials. In 2018, the five types of book censorship were: vandalizing pages, hiding resources, requiring parental permission to access, removing materials, and book burning. It is thanks to the commitment of librarians, teachers, parents, and students that most challenges and bans are unsuccessful and reading materials like "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings," the Hunger Games series, "Slaughterhouse Five," and the Harry Potter series remain available. The most challenged and/or restricted reading materials have been books for children. Challenges are not simply an expression of a point of view; on the contrary, they are an attempt to remove materials from public use, thereby restricting the access of others. -

[S. 1331] Be it enacted by the Seriate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress asserribled^ Library of Congress. DECLARATION OF FINDINGS AND PURPOSE Center for the Book. SECTION 1. The Congress hereby finds and declares— Establishment. (1) that the Congress of the United States on April 24, 1800, 2 use 171. established for itself a library of the Congress; (2) that in 1815, the Congress purchased the personal library of the third President of the United States which contained mate rials on every science known to man and described such a collec tion as a "substratum of a great national library"; (3) that the Congress of the United States in recognition of the importance of printing and its impact on America purchased the Gutenberg Bible in 1930 for the Nation for placement in the Library of Congress; (4) that the Congress of the United States has through statute and appropriations made this library accessible to any member of the public; (5) that this collection of books and other library materials has now become one of the greatest libraries in civilization; (6) that the book and the printed word have had the most profound influence on American civilization and learning and have been the very foundation on which our democratic principles have survived through our two hundred-year history; (7) that in the year 1977, the Congress of the United States assembled hereby declares its reaffirmation of the importance of the printed word and the book and recognizes the importance of a Center for the Book to the continued study and development of written record as central to our understanding of ourselves and our world.
