E-mail: [email protected] Abstract. This paper investigates the butterfly fauna of the ‘Serra do Rola-Moça’ State Park, Minas Gerais, Brazil. We eval- uate i) the seasonal variation of species richness and composition; and ii) the variation in composition of the local butterfly assemblage among three sampling sites and between the dry and rainy seasons. Sampling was carried out monthly between November 2012 and October 2013, using entomological nets. After a total sampling effort of 504 net hours, 311 species were recorded. One of them is endangered in Brazil, and eight are probable new species. Furthermore, two species were new records for the region and eight considered endemic of the Cerrado domain. There was no significant difference in species richness between the dry and the rainy seasons, however the species composition varies significantly among sampling sites. Due to its special, heterogeneous environment, which is home to a rich butterfly fauna, its preservation is important for the conservation of the regional butterfly fauna. -

Palabras clave: museo, ciencias naturales, catálogo, colecciones, vertebrados ABSTRACT The Catalog of the Exposed Collection is presented, as well as of others inside the Celestino Kalinowski Museum of the Parque de Las Leyendas, located in the city of Lima. Most of the collection, of national scope, comes from the quarry and the taxidermic activity of C. Kalinowski. The museum exhibits a list of invertebrate and vertebrate specimens, the latter in an ordered museographic arrangement framed in the design of dioramas in the context of representation of the country's ecosystems. Taxonomic information and the alphabetical index of the biological material, the collection of the museum as a whole, are provided. -
Helium Ion Microscopy of Lepidoptera Scales 1 Abstract 2 Introduction
Helium ion microscopy of lepidoptera scales Stuart A. Boden*, Asa Asadollahbaik, Harvey N. Rutt, Darren M. Bagnall Electronics and Computer Science, University of Southampton, Highfield, Southampton, Hampshire, UK, SO17 1BJ *corresponding author, [email protected] Key words: Helium ion microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, structural color, charge neutralization, stereo pairs 1 Abstract In this report, helium ion microscopy (HIM) is used to study the micro and nano-structures responsible for structural color in the wings of two species of Lepidotera from the Papilionidae family: Papilio ulysses (Blue Mountain Butterfly) and Parides sesostris (Emerald-patched Cattleheart). Electronic charging under the beam of uncoated scales from the wings of these butterflies is successfully neutralized, leading to images displaying a large depth-of- field and a high level of surface detail, which would normally be obscured by traditional coating methods used for scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The images are compared to those from variable pressure SEM, demonstrating the superiority of HIM at high magnifications. In addition, the large depth-of-field capabilities of HIM are exploited through the creation of stereo pairs which allows the exploration of the third dimension. Furthermore, the extraction of quantitative height information which matches well with cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy (TEM) measurements from the literature is demonstrated. 2 Introduction The huge diversity of colors observed in nature has been a source of fascination throughout human history. The visual appearance of most biological systems is governed by the distribution of pigments, chemicals that selectively absorb part of the spectrum of white light. Perhaps the most striking colors however are produced by entirely different mechanisms based on spatial variations in refractive index on the order of the wavelength of incident light. -

Popovi c Abstract Anthocharis damone Boisduval, 1836 is known from southern Italy, Greece, Republic of Macedonia, Albania and further in the Middle East. At the end of May and beginning of June 2015 it was recorded for the first time in Serbia. A single isolated colony was found 170 km NW from the northernmost known locality in Europe. This record made us review A. damone distribution in Europe, suggested its possibly wider range over the Balkans and increased the list of butterflies recorded in Serbia to a total of 200 species. Tera: Papilionidae): Cladistic Reappraisals Using Mainly Immature Stage Characters, with Focus on the Birdwings Ornithoptera Boisduval
Bull. Kitakyushu Mus. Nat. Hist., 15: 43-118. March 28, 1996 Gondwanan Evolution of the Troidine Swallowtails (Lepidop- tera: Papilionidae): Cladistic Reappraisals Using Mainly Immature Stage Characters, with Focus on the Birdwings Ornithoptera Boisduval Michael J. Parsons Entomology Section, Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County 900 Exposition Blvd., LosAngeles, California 90007, U.S.A.*' (Received December 13, 1995) Abstract In order to reappraise the interrelationships of genera in the tribe Troidini, and to test the resultant theory of troidine evolution against biogeographical data a cladistic analysis of troidine genera was performed. Data were obtained mainly from immature stages, providing characters that appeared to be more reliable than many "traditional" adult characters. A single cladogram hypothesising phylogenetic relation ships of the troidine genera was generated. This differs markedly from cladograms obtained in previous studies that used only adult characters. However, the cladogram appears to fit well biogeographical data for the Troidini in terms of vicariance biogcography, especially as this relates to the general hypotheses of Gondwanaland fragmentation and continental drift events advanced by recent geological studies. The genus Ornithoptera is shown to be distinct from Troides. Based on input data drawn equally from immature stages and adult characters, a single cladogram hypothesising the likely phylogeny of Ornithoptera species was generated. With minor weighting of a single important adult character (male -
