On February 18, 2012, when he received the red biretta, he joined the ranks of twelve other Augustinian Friars who have served as Cardinals. This line stretches back to 1378, when Bonaventura Badoardo da Padova, O.S.A., was named Cardinal, the first Augustinian Friar so honored. While serving in this position, he made several trips to visit Augustinian sites. In 1897, while visiting Villanova, he was pho- tographed with the professed friars of the Province. Among these men were friars who served in leader- ship roles for the Province, at Villanova College, and in parishes and schools run by the Augustinians. Rating details. More filters. Sort order. Clearly, the political climate has much to do with the decision since the Pope is determined to increase the number of priests by raiding the ranks of the Anglicans and Newman was the poster-child for jumping ship. John, in particular and this has led to all sorts speculation has to which way he batted. He was himself opposed to it, hence his insistence on burial in a compost that would speed up bodily disintegration. We, he suggests, are faced with a conundrum that he foresaw, if not explicitly stated, where the secular government is forced to protect the freedom of expression of sects, which in turn leads to more secularism. His solution was a return to Catholicism. In the Epilogue, Cornwell examines in detail the claims by Jack Sullivan who claims he was healed of a serious back condition by praying to Newman, which caused the pain to disappear. Placebo effect, anyone? Caveat emptor. Sep 27, Alan Cooke rated it it was amazing. Quite apart from the rather boring speculation about Newman's "gayness" and his impending sainthood, this is a marvellous biography. I came away from it with immense respect and admiration for Newman, and the details of his journey from low-church evangelical Christianity to high Anglicanism and eventually to Catholicism, are richly detailed and absorbing.

  • Influence of Joachim in the 13Th Century
THE INFLUENCE OF JOACHIM IN THE 13TH CENTURY Frances Andrews The end of the 12th century was one of the periods of great eschatological potential in the medieval Latin west. In October 1187 Jerusalem was lost to a Kurdish sultan, Saladin, and the Crusade campaigns which followed were catastrophic. Tensions between the English and French crowns were at a peak, and in June 1190 the western Emperor, Frederick I Barbarossa, drowned in the river Göksu (Saleph) on his way to the Holy Land. Things were no better in the Iberian peninsula: in July 1195 the Almohad Muslim prince Ya ‘qub I al-Mansur (the victorious) defeated the Christian King Alfonso VIII of Castille at the Battle of Alarcos. It was against this unstable background that Joachim, in the preface to his Liber de Concordia, wrote of his self-chosen role in preparing the Church in the face of the enemy:1 Our [task] is to foresee wars, yours is to hasten to arms. It is for us to go up to the watchtower on the mountain and, having seen the enemy, to give warning; yours, having heard the signal, is to take refuge in safer places. We, although unworthy scouts, witnessed long ago that the said wars would come. Would that you were worthy soldiers of Christ! “Let 1 For a chronology of his works as then known, see Kurt-Victor Selge, “L’origine delle opere di Gioacchino da Fiore,” in L’attesa della fine dei tempi nel medioevo, eds. • 015-San Clemente
(015/25) San Clemente al Laterano The Basilica of San Clemente is an early 12th century minor basilica, a titular and conventual church built on top of the ruins of a late 4th century church, itself on top of important ancient Roman remains. The church is in rione Monte, between the Coliseum and San Giovanni in Laterano. The dedication is to Pope St Clement I. [1] History The present church was built around 1100. Below it is a 4th century church, and below that are two ancient Roman edifices. One of these is a Roman building in which it is traditionally believed that Christians worshipped until the 4th century church was built. [1] The 19th century excavations under the church uncovered a pagan temple, a Mithraeum or Temple of Mithras which belonged to one of many 1st century mystery religions in competition with Christianity in Rome. Next to this were the remains of a very solid structure, which they identified as the palazzo of Titus Flavius Clemens. Modern archaeologists now suspect this edifice was not a private dwelling, but might have been the Moneta (or Imperial mint for coinage). There is evidence of substantial alteration to this in the 3rd century, which modern publications suggest might have been as a result of conversion to Christian use.
