Auckland Transport have announced they will introduce sweeping changes to speed limits as they signalled some time ago. As I have commented before their rationale is that “inappropriate speed” contributes to 20% of deaths and serious injuries in the Super City. So, from June next year the CBD will be saddled with a blanket 30 kph speed limit, and many of the Franklin and Rodney rural roads will reduce from 100 kph to 80 or 60 kph. A record 11722 submissions were received, of which 2503 were in support, 3317 against and the balance had no firm stance. I could point out that 80% of deaths and injuries have no connection with inappropriate speed. I could surmise that the decision largely flies in the face of public opinion. I could wish them luck in getting public buy-in and compliance. I could question how a major regulatory constraint on all rate payers can be decided by unelected bureaucrats rather than the Council. But frankly, why bother? They are Council Controlled Organisation but seem to have an independence that suggests no Council control exists. I sincerely hope I am proved wrong, but I foresee very little change to the accident statistics and very little adherence to the new limits. Enough said... I have been following the MotoGP with interest this season (yes, I know they are missing 2 wheels) and it’s been well worth it. With World Champion Marc Marquez being given a curry up by the rookie Quartararo, privateer teams often out-performing the factory teams and some scintillating racing it has been great to watch. -

From products developed through these activities to the establishment of the GR Garage, TOYOTA GAZOO Racing’s motorsports activities have been promoted as a comprehensive method of increasing numbers of car fans. At last month’s North American International Auto Show in Detroit, we unveiled the new “Supra,” which is set to become the first global model in the GR series line-up. The new Supra incorporates the knowledge and know-how that TOYOTA GAZOO Racing has accumulated thus far, and has been developed with the goal of enabling customers to fully experience the joy of driving. We have positioned the new Supra as our flagship model and, by feeding back knowledge gained through motorsports activities into the development of new products, we intend to further expand the GR series line-up. In 2018, TOYOTA GAZOO Racing achieved the long-desired goal of winning the 24 Hours of Le Mans and also secured the WRC manufacturers’ title, demonstrating that the challenges we have embarked on are leading to concrete results. However, we will not rest on our laurels. In order to deliver the anticipation and excitement of driving to a wider audience, we will engage in the motorsports activities listed below in 2019. Communiqué de presse Press release Confidential C 26/01/2021 Alpine Elf Matmut Team announces drivers for FIA WEC World Championship • Forty-three years after the outright victory of the Alpine A442b in the 24 Hours of Le Mans, Alpine returns to the premier category of Endurance racing. • FIA WEC LMP2 World Champion in 2016, 2019 and triple winner of the 24 Hours of Le Mans, Alpine Elf Matmut Team will join the 2021 championship in the Hypercar category with modest objectives but a desire to surprise. • The Alpine A480 n°36 will be entrusted to a squad of Nicolas Lapierre, André Negrão and Matthieu Vaxivière. Boulogne-Billancourt, 26th January 2021 - LMP2 World Champion in 2016 and 2019, the Alpine Elf Matmut team has decided to take it to the next level in 2021 by entering the Hypercar category, the premier class of the 2021 FIA WEC Championship. The Alpine, named A480, will be emblazoned with its favourite number, #36, with which the team won the 24 Hours of Le Mans LMP2 category three times in the last five years. The aim for the Alpine Elf Matmut Team will be to surprise in its first season in the premier class. To this end it will count on the talent of its race team and three drivers. Frenchman Nicolas Lapierre, champion in 2016 and 2019, will be joined by Brazilian André Negrão, with whom he has shared many successes within the Alpine team. The crew will be completed by Frenchman Matthieu Vaxivière, an experienced endurance competitor with four entries in the 24 Hours of Le Mans, including two podiums in the LMP2 category in 2019 and 2020. -

La aristocracia en el automovilismo: El marqués Alfonso de Portago Entre las curiosidades de la historia del automovilismo, encontramos en ciertas ocasiones, la presencia de personalidades extravagantes, como lo fueron los aristócratas, pilotos de sangre azul. Entre ellos encontramos hacia los años 50 al marqués de Portago, cuyo nombre completo era Alfonso Antonio Vicente Eduardo Angel Blas Francisco Borja Cabeza de Vaca y Leighton, quien había nacido en Londres en 1928 y fue apadrinado por el rey Alfonso XIII de España. Su trayectoria en el automovilismo no fue muy extensa, ya que debutó en 1953, y murió en un accidente en 1957. No obstante, y a pesar de que no era un piloto demasiado efectivo, conquistó algunas victorias, mayormente compitiendo con Ferrari. Al principio, participó de carreras como copiloto, debutando en la carrera Panamericana de México en 1953, aunque poco después competiría él en otros autos, sin problema alguno para adquirirlos, dada su estirpe noble y su riqueza. Disputó pocas carreras en F1, pero participó en competencias de coches sport, de larga duración, como las 24 horas de Le Mans, y la Mille Miglia. Anduvo también por Argentina, participando en los 1000 kms. de la ciudad de Buenos Aires. Si había algo que caracterizaba al noble español, esto era ser un gran velocista, aunque en muchas ocasiones no terminaba las carreras por su ímpetu. No obstante, triunfó en una carrera para coches no oficiales en las islas Bahamas, sobre una Ferrari 750 Monza que había adquirido, para luego obtener un segundo puesto en ese mismo sitio. El marqués de Portago siempre fue admirador de los Ferrari, aunque tardó en convencer a don Enzo para que lo contrate como piloto. -

FELIX ROSENQVIST TAKING A SUSTAINABLE VIEW ON MOTORSPORT A multiple title winner and frontrunner in every championship he ever contested, Sweden’s Felix Rosenqvist is one of the most exciting up-and-coming talents in international motorsport. The 2013 campaign saw Rosenqvist engulfed in a dramatic two-way scrap for the prestigious FIA Formula 3 European Championship title, eventually finishing second to Ferrari-backed Italian Raffaele Marciello. The various racing categories are moving on a pace and there is plenty to talk about in the world of motorsport medicine and rescue. This issue takes a look at some track safety devices; namely the run-off areas and gravel traps – the pros, the cons and the downright scary. There is a review of recent race events and a few highlights from other aspects of motorsporting news. If you have ever wanted to know what a tank slapper, a lambda reading or reactive suspension was, then skip to the Wikipedia motorsports terminology link. Good luck. Matthew Mac Partlin Technical review Track safety devices – Run-offs and gravel traps Competitors and race vehicles can be fully prepared with safety equipment, but at some point or other a vehicle will unintentionally veer off the track. Sometimes the driver will be able to gather it up and rejoin the race, if there is sufficient space to do so. However, there is often a conflict between race track safety, spectator friendliness and geography. The safest track would probably be a straight road, with a wide run-off to either side and at either end and have no more Copyright Matthew Mac Partlin, 2010 Page 1 of 9 than a couple of cars competing on it at any one time. But it wouldn’t be terribly interesting to compete in or to watch. -

Porsche 919 Hybrid Return to top-level sport Porsche is making its comeback to the top-level motorsport arena: with the new 919 Hybrid the sports car brand is sending a platform for pioneering technology to the top category of the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) with the undisputed seasonal highlight of the 24-hour Le Mans race. Porsche's reputation precedes it at this venue: with 16 overall victories under its belt, the brand holds the record for this, the most famous endurance race in the world. In 2014 Porsche is returning to the top-level class endurance race after a 16-year absence - namely Le Mans Prototypes (LMP1). Matthias Müller, Chairman of the Executive Board of Porsche AG explains: "The new and revolutionary efficiency regulations for this class were what prompted us to take this step. In 2014 it is not going to be the fastest contender who is going to win the sports car world championship and Le Mans, but the car that gets furthest with the defined amount of energy. And it is precisely this challenge that the automotive industry has to face. The 919 Hybrid is like a high speed research laboratory and the most complex racing car Porsche has ever built." The new WEC regulations for the LMP1 racing car gives engineers an unusual amount of leeway and demands pioneering technology, such as hybridisation, downsizing engines and consistent lightweight construction. This is all particularly relevant for the development of future generations of factory-spec sports cars. Maximum sporting performance and highest efficiency are at the heart of "Porsche Intelligent Performance". -
