Ph.D. August 2004. Telecommunications Managing the Content of Malaysian Television Drama: Producers, Gatekeepers and the Barisan Nasional Government (303 pp.) Director of Dissertation: Drew McDaniel Abstract: The purpose of this dissertation is to describe and analyze how drama television content is managed in Malaysia. By looking at the production process of local drama television programming, this study examines the interactions among the three major players – the Barisan Nasional regime, the major television networks and independent producers – who are responsible for shaping its content. Three research methods are used for this study: in-depth interviewing, the informal conversational interview and documentary research. Between June 2001 and November 2002, 32 interviewees participated in this research. The research finds that the Malaysian drama television producer’s ability to generate program content is constrained by the Barisan Nasional regime. Three observations are made to outline the power relationship between the government and the television industry. First, the government often encourages television producers to make drama programs with the theme of friendship and goodwill (muhibah) among different ethnic communities in order to nurture racial harmony. -

FROM THE CAVES AND JUNGLES OF HINDOSTAN. TRANSLATED FROM··THE RUSSIAN OF HELENA PETROVNA BLAVATSKY. THE THEOSOPHICAL PUBLISHING SOCIETY, 161, NEW BOND STREET, LONDON, W. [REPRINTED 1908.] Th.1a One 1111 II BUru- ,,..-, TRANSLATOR'S PREFACE. "You must remember," said Mme. Blavatsky, ccthat I never meant this for a scientific work. My letters to the Russian Alessmgcr, under the general title: 'From the Caves and Jungles of Hindostan,' were written in leisure moments, more for amusement than with any serious design. .. Broadly speaking, the facts and incidents are true; but I have freely availed myself of an author's privi lege to group, colour, and dramatize them, whenever this seemed necessary to the full artistic effect; though, as I say, much of the book is exactly true, I would rather claim kindly judgment for it, as a romance of travel, than incur the critical risks that llaunt an avowedly serious \Vork." To this caution of the author's, the translator must add another; these letters, as Mme. Blavatsky saYs, were written in leisure moments, during 1879 and 188o, for the pages of the Russkt" Vyestnik, then edited by l\1. Katkoff. Mme. Blavatsky's manuscript was often incorrect; often obscure. The Russian com positors, though they did their best to render faith fully the Indian names and places, often producecj, through their ignorance of Oriental tongues, fornis which are st:range. and sometimes unrecognizable. iv TRANSI.ATO:R'S PMPACB. The proof-sheets were never corrected by the author, who was then in India; and, in consequence, it has been impossible to restore all the local and personal names to their proper form. -

DOI: 10.1051/ shsconf/20173300058 SHS Web of Conferences 33, 00058 (2017) i-COME'16 Border Issue: Misperception between Indonesia and Malaysia Irwansyah Irwansyah1,* 1Universitas Indonesia, Communication Department, Kampus UI Depok 16424, Indonesia Abstract. Indonesia and Malaysia border has been disputed and led to misperception. By using Krauss and Morsella’s misperception concept, this study described that the border issue was occurred only online community member who never existed at the border area. Online community members constructed the discourse about border issue based on the agenda of mass media. While online community members and mass media lead discussion on sovereignty and nationalistic ideology, local border people concerned how they maintain the mutual relationship. The misperception which leads to conflict in online community forum showed the extent of civil conflict mediated by mass and new media. 1 Introduction: Border Issue between Indonesia and Malaysia Mass media has shown the Indonesian–Malaysian relationship to be one of conflict rather than one of cooperation [1]. Conflict between Indonesia and Malaysia date to 1960. At that time, Indonesia refused to recognize the emergence of the Malaysia Federal State, which was considered a colony under British imperialism. The conflict has continued and the border dispute between Indonesia and Malaysia has resulted in high tension between the two governments, including their military forces [2]. Since both countries proclaimed their liberty, at least four serious issues concerning border claims have fueled discourse in the mass media. First was the dispute over the Sipadan–Ligitan islands, which Malaysia won through the International Tribute to Justice (ITJ) on December, 2012. -
