Azrul Nor Fadzilah, Hanizah Idris - Perubahan Peranan Tentera Laut PERUBAHAN PERANAN TENTERA LAUT DAN AGENSI-AGENSI PENGUATKUASAAN MARITIM LAIN DI MALAYSIA DALAM MENGAWAL PERAIRAN NEGARA PADA ABAD KE-21 Changes in the Role of the Navy and Other Maritime Enforcement Agencies in Malaysia in Regulating National Waters in the 21st Century Azrul Nor Fadzilah & Hanizah Idris ABSTRACT The end of Cold War marked changes in the context of peace and security in the seas as it happens up to this day. The most obvious is the conflict transition opportunities that allow wars to break out. Although the Cold War has ended, other various challenges have emerged from the rapid increase of maritime criminal activities including smuggling of drugs, smuggling of humans and arms, illegal fishing, illegal waste dumping, and sea robbery and piracy. This led sovereign countries including Malaysia to enforce laws in the seas. The expansion of a country’s sea boundaries stretching 200 nautical miles, forms the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) from the boundary baseline of each countries allow these respective countries including Malaysia to have sovereign rights over the resources in the Continental Shelf. With this responsibility and the role of the naval and other maritime enforcement agencies of many other countries including Malaysia, have began experiencing changes in the field task, expertise, resources and new assets needed to enhance the enforcement and monitoring of the Maritime Zone of Malaysia. For Malaysia, the challenges it faces in the 21st century led to the establishment of Coast Guard Team of Malaysia where all resources and assets can be used and benefit as much as possible in order to protect national security and sovereignty.

Ph.D. August 2004. Telecommunications Managing the Content of Malaysian Television Drama: Producers, Gatekeepers and the Barisan Nasional Government (303 pp.) Director of Dissertation: Drew McDaniel Abstract: The purpose of this dissertation is to describe and analyze how drama television content is managed in Malaysia. By looking at the production process of local drama television programming, this study examines the interactions among the three major players – the Barisan Nasional regime, the major television networks and independent producers – who are responsible for shaping its content. Three research methods are used for this study: in-depth interviewing, the informal conversational interview and documentary research. Between June 2001 and November 2002, 32 interviewees participated in this research. The research finds that the Malaysian drama television producer’s ability to generate program content is constrained by the Barisan Nasional regime. Three observations are made to outline the power relationship between the government and the television industry. First, the government often encourages television producers to make drama programs with the theme of friendship and goodwill (muhibah) among different ethnic communities in order to nurture racial harmony.

  • Border Issue: Misperception Between Indonesia and Malaysia
DOI: 10.1051/ shsconf/20173300058 SHS Web of Conferences 33, 00058 (2017) i-COME'16 Border Issue: Misperception between Indonesia and Malaysia Irwansyah Irwansyah1,* 1Universitas Indonesia, Communication Department, Kampus UI Depok 16424, Indonesia Abstract. Indonesia and Malaysia border has been disputed and led to misperception. By using Krauss and Morsella’s misperception concept, this study described that the border issue was occurred only online community member who never existed at the border area. Online community members constructed the discourse about border issue based on the agenda of mass media. While online community members and mass media lead discussion on sovereignty and nationalistic ideology, local border people concerned how they maintain the mutual relationship. The misperception which leads to conflict in online community forum showed the extent of civil conflict mediated by mass and new media. 1 Introduction: Border Issue between Indonesia and Malaysia Mass media has shown the Indonesian–Malaysian relationship to be one of conflict rather than one of cooperation [1]. Conflict between Indonesia and Malaysia date to 1960. At that time, Indonesia refused to recognize the emergence of the Malaysia Federal State, which was considered a colony under British imperialism. The conflict has continued and the border dispute between Indonesia and Malaysia has resulted in high tension between the two governments, including their military forces [2]. Since both countries proclaimed their liberty, at least four serious issues concerning border claims have fueled discourse in the mass media. First was the dispute over the Sipadan–Ligitan islands, which Malaysia won through the International Tribute to Justice (ITJ) on December, 2012.

CSIS conducts research and analysis and develops policy initiatives that look into the future and anticipate change. Founded by David M. Abshire and Admiral Arleigh Burke at the height of the Cold War, CSIS was dedicated to the simple but urgent goal of finding ways for America to survive as a nation and prosper as a people. Since 1962, CSIS has grown to become one of the world’s preeminent public policy institutions. Today, CSIS is a bipartisan, nonprofit organization headquartered in Washington, DC. More than 220 full-time staff and a large network of affiliated scholars focus their expertise on defense and security; on the world’s regions and the unique challenges inherent to them; and on the issues that know no boundary in an increasingly connected world.
