Again, the final story is a little different, but achieves a similar result by making the dead boy the outsider, a victim of political machinations, while the investigator can do little but look on and wrestle with his moral dilemma: it subverts one of the normal rules of the crime genre, which is that the story is about the mental battle between criminal and investigator. Now, I think I'm going to have to go back to my bookshelf and get down Billy Bathgate again to see if I still like it as well as I did the first time I read it. I was a little underwhelmed by this book because of my love for the film, Sweet Land. Doctorow's is the voice of a polished literary artist. In order, A House on the Plains describes a young man's discovery that his mother is a serial killer, enticing men to a midwest farm to kill and rob them; Baby Wilson is told from the point of view of the boyfriend of a young woman who steals a child from a hospital; Jolene: A Life describes the disastrous relationships of a young woman who initially marries at fifteen to escape a foster home; Walter John Harmon is the story of a cult whose founder is a garage mechanic who was caught up in a seeming miracle; and, finally, Child, Dead, in the Rose Garden is about the choices made by an FBI agent initially called in to investigate the discovery of a boy's body in the White House grounds but later instructed to be part of a cover up. Doctorow knew how to write about people, illness, and the nuances that are found in life. A powerful series of short stories set in northern MN. Family, work, health— any of the zillion…. I really thought it would be simple. An interseting array of short stories based on life in America. Liberty and sweetness are clearly in short supply in these stories, but Doctorow is not the first to use the sweet land quotation ironically - there is a film of the same name, about the struggles of a German girl who travels to Minnesota during the war to marry a farmer there. Heartwarming, real, fun, sad, happy. This story also differs from its companions in that the protagonist is not a down-and- outer but a respectable person in a responsible job. Selim also had to find funding and a cast. All the stories make a point which is critical of American society even if the stories are set in the past, which is at least apparently the case with the first three , with the final tale being overt political satire, with the boy a symbol of those without a voice in modern US politics. They are certainly dramatic and engaging, but they are also very disturbing. My favourite story was a gravestone made of wheat. Stated First Edition. Browse All Posts. • Doctorow by Half
The following document is an extract from For Argument’s Sake: Essays on Literature and Culture by Daniel Davis Wood, pages 275-280. It appears here, in PDF format, exactly as it appears in print. www.danieldaviswood.com DOCTOROW BY HALF E.L. DOCTOROW‟S ALL THE TIME IN THE WORLD This review originally appeared online in The Critical Flame 3.18 (March-April 2012). EARLY IN ALL THE TIME IN THE WORLD, HIS THIRD COLLECTION of short stories, E.L. Doctorow raises the surprising suggestion that the book he has written might not be worth reading from cover to cover. The suggestion isn‟t explicit, of course, but it emerges, un- mistakably, in the space between Doctorow‟s preface and his table of contents. Doctorow has long been one of America‟s most cele- brated novelists with a slew of modern classics to his name. He ex- ploded onto the literary scene with his début, Welcome to Hard Times, a loosely metafictional account of the birth of civilisation on the American frontier, and then he published a string of acclaimed and similarly postmodern historical novels including — most notably — The Book of Daniel, Ragtime, and Billy Bathgate. However, when he admits in his preface to All the Time in the World that he enJoys writ- ing short stories because they offer “the quick return of an aesthetic investment” (ix), he unwisely, if unwittingly, characterises his stories as less considered and less deserving of time and effort than the novels that have earned him his reputation. Then he reinforces this characterisation with a table of contents that promises a strange selection of work.

L. Doctorow is distinguished at his literary innovation of juxtaposing historical and imaginative texts, and is acknowledged as a “postmodern author”. However ,after surveying his creative doctrines and artistic concept, we may perceive a kind of spiritual ring that is out of tune with postmodern literature, but quite compatible with Gnostic principles. The Gnosticism emphasizes the “intuitive process of knowing” which can be reflected in Doctorow’s novelistic creation. This study intends to prove that in Doctorow’s fiction there exists an ongoing drive to relate the story which stems from the author’s Gnostic consciousness; the power of Doctorow’s narrative right derives from human desire to reestablish the lost spiritual connection with other human beings by means of mysterious signs and symbols of language. The endeavor to interpret Doctorow’s literary creation with the help of Gnostic spirits and attitudes may bring dynamics to Doctorow criticism, inspire the appreciation of Doctorow’s works, and attempt to redress his stereotypical title as a “postmodern writer”.
