Based loosely on the organized crime Billy Bathgate of the 20's and 30's, Billy Bathgate is the story of a young man's rise from gopher to right hand Billy Bathgate in Dutch Schultz' gang. Having been impressed Billy Bathgate the youth, Schultz takes him under his wing so to speak. Billy soon finds himself in a world where wealth and fortune live next Billy Bathgate to danger and death. The big screen adaptation of E. Doctorow's novel shows impressive credentials and handsome production values; so why is the finished film so inert? Billy Bathgate it because the story itself, about a fresh-faced Bronx kid who, during the Depression, learns the hard facts of criminal life from mobster Dutch Schultz and falls for the boss' girlfriend is so familiar? Could it be the abrupt, anti-climactic ending to the film's clever hopscotch structure? Or is it because the movie is too much about Billy played Billy Bathgate clean-cut newcomer Loren Dean, a throwback Billy Bathgate pre- Touchstone Disney and not his psychotic mentor? No evidence is visible of the much publicized production problems other than a few scenes where dialogue was obviously overdubbed, but the film still looks as if it were made under duress. A strong supporting cast, and Dustin Hoffman's exciting performance as the vulgar Dutch, are saving graces. Looking for something to watch? The following document is an extract from For Argument’s Sake: Essays on Literature and Culture by Daniel Davis Wood, pages 275-280. It appears here, in PDF format, exactly as it appears in print. www.danieldaviswood.com DOCTOROW BY HALF E.L. DOCTOROW‟S ALL THE TIME IN THE WORLD This review originally appeared online in The Critical Flame 3.18 (March-April 2012). EARLY IN ALL THE TIME IN THE WORLD, HIS THIRD COLLECTION of short stories, E.L. Doctorow raises the surprising suggestion that the book he has written might not be worth reading from cover to cover. The suggestion isn‟t explicit, of course, but it emerges, un- mistakably, in the space between Doctorow‟s preface and his table of contents. Doctorow has long been one of America‟s most cele- brated novelists with a slew of modern classics to his name. He ex- ploded onto the literary scene with his début, Welcome to Hard Times, a loosely metafictional account of the birth of civilisation on the American frontier, and then he published a string of acclaimed and similarly postmodern historical novels including — most notably — The Book of Daniel, Ragtime, and Billy Bathgate. However, when he admits in his preface to All the Time in the World that he enJoys writ- ing short stories because they offer “the quick return of an aesthetic investment” (ix), he unwisely, if unwittingly, characterises his stories as less considered and less deserving of time and effort than the novels that have earned him his reputation. Then he reinforces this characterisation with a table of contents that promises a strange selection of work.

FinalProject 25/08/2018, 930 PM COGS108 Final Project Group Members: Yanyi Wang Ziwen Zeng Lingfei Lu Yuhan Wang Yuqing Deng Introduction and Background Movie revenue is one of the most important measure of good and bad movies. Revenue is also the most important and intuitionistic feedback to producers, directors and actors. Therefore it is worth for us to put effort on analyzing what factors correlate to revenue, so that producers, directors and actors know how to get higher revenue on next movie by focusing on most correlated factors. Our project focuses on anaylzing all kinds of factors that correlated to revenue, for example, genres, elements in the movie, popularity, release month, runtime, vote average, vote count on website and cast etc. After analysis, we can clearly know what are the crucial factors to a movie's revenue and our analysis can be used as a guide for people shooting movies who want to earn higher renveue for their next movie. They can focus on those most correlated factors, for example, shooting specific genre and hire some actors who have higher average revenue. Reasrch Question: Various factors blend together to create a high revenue for movie, but what are the most important aspect contribute to higher revenue? What aspects should people put more effort on and what factors should people focus on when they try to higher the revenue of a movie? http://localhost:8888/nbconvert/html/Desktop/MyProjects/Pr_085/FinalProject.ipynb?download=false Page 1 of 62 FinalProject 25/08/2018, 930 PM Hypothesis: We predict that the following factors contribute the most to movie revenue.

I owe a deep debt of gratitude to my supervisor, Dr. Eric Drott, whose keen—and always timely—critiques have steered my dissertation toward one with both breadth and analytical depth. I would also like to thank the entire theory department at UT Austin. Its support though T.A. and A.I. positions has helped me hone my pedagogical craft, while the Kent Kennan fellowship has allowed me to finish my dissertation in a timely manner. Thanks must also be given for the collegial atmosphere—especially amongst my fellow students—which made attending UT a delight. My family, of course, has been the basis for my success.

American Conversation E. L. Doctorow September 25, 2008 Archivist of the United States Allen Weinstein welcomed award-winning novelist E. L. Doctorow for an “American Conversation.” Doctorow’s work depicts various eras and personalities in American history and has been published in 30 languages. His novels include The March, City of God, Welcome to Hard Times, The Book of Daniel, Ragtime, Loon Lake, World’s Fair, Billy Bathgate, and The Waterworks. He currently holds the Lewis and Loretta Glucksman Chair of English and American Letters at New York University. The program took place in the William G. Doctorow's dozen books, dozen novels: "City of God," "Welcome to Hard Times," "Book of Daniel," "Ragtime," "Loon Lake," "Lives of the Poets," "World's Fair," "Billy Bathgate," "The Waterworks," and of course the extraordinary book "The March," which is his most recently published book. We, uh... we're going to let our guest have a few introductory words on some of the issues that I'd think we'd like to talk to him about, but let me to say to begin with that this is a banner day for the American Conversations discussions that we've been having, and I thank you, sir, for joining them. Edgar Lawrence Doctorow had the good sense to be born in New York City and to live in the Bronx.
