Message from the President

Ciao a Tutti

What a great month we had at our club in March. We started off with our Saturday Latin Night. As usual, it was a packed house and the dancing never ended. Thank you to all the volunteers who helped put this together for another successful night. On to our St. Joseph’s Dinner Dance which was over the top. The food was delicious and of course our own Phil Farino made it a grand night. A special thank you goes out to Mike our chef, Lucille and her crew for the beautiful decorations, the Heritage Committee, John La Corte and his volunteers for making the St. Josephs pastry and Lou Monico and his “Roasting” of the Board! Very funny! April is going to be the most exciting month. On April 9, it’s our Sock Hop night with Traces of Gold playing. So dress up in your favorite 50’s outfit and get ready for a fantastic night. Tickets are going fast so you haven’t bought them yet they are on sale now. April 30 is our Vegas Night and this is something you won’t want to miss. Our hall will look like a Casino and we have some exciting games for you to play. The admission is $20.00 dollars and that includes a free appetizer buffet all night and $500.00 in play money to spend at the tables. For every $200.00 dollars you win you will be given a ticket to put in the pick a prize buckets. There are some fantastic prizes. Tickets are on sale now and will also be sold at the door. The board and I want to say thank you for the attendance at the General Membership meeting. We had a huge quorum and passed one of our By-Law changes. Save the date April 20, 2016 we are having our next meeting and will be giving away another $50.00. Hope to see all of you there. Nominations are coming up this month for the Executive Board and its Directors. If you are interested in running, please let Liz Piettro know by email. Again, I stress if you are planning on running, we are a working Board and you will be expected to close the club on weekdays & weekends. Good luck to all of you. Please pray for all of our members in need and remember “THIS IS OUR CLUB AND OUR FAMILY”. Thank you to all the Volunteers and Committees for making this club the best one on the strip. Grazie a Tutti Chuck Buglione, President

Perry Como

Pierno Ronald “Perry” Como was born May 18, 1912 in Cannonsburg, Pa. He was the 7th of the 13 children of Pietro Como and Lucai Travaglini, who had immigrated to the US from Italy. Perry was the first of their children to be born in the US, but he did not speak English until he started school as his family spoke Italian at home. His father ensured that all his children had music lessons by a young age; Como knew how to play the trombone, guitar and organ. He never had vocal training.

He started working for his family at the age of 10 in a barber shop and became the main breadwinner with his brothers at the age of 14 when his father had to stop working due to a heart condition. Despite Perry’s musical abilities, his primary ambition was to become the best barber in his town.

His musical break came when he began touring with bandleader Freddie Carlone when he was 21. He married his childhood sweetheart Roselle Beline in 1933 and had 3 children, Ronnie, David and Terry. He then got a break with Ted Weems’s Orchestra in the mid 1930-s on WEEM’s radio show Beat the Band. He then hosted “Supper Club” a regional CBS radio show. He gained a contract with RCA Victor Records in 1943 and began working in Hollywood. Como really hit the big time in 1945 with the film “Words and Music” and his song “Till the End of Time” spending 10 weeks at the top of the music charts.

He made his entrance into television in 1948, with his show “The Chesterfield Supper Club” which earned him several Emmy awards. He then went to NBC in 1955 and achieved his greatest success with an 8 year run. This was the Show that featured his theme song: “Sing Along With Me”. It was also in this show where he developed and honed the image of the cardigan wearing relaxed, wholesome nice-guy that has become his trademark. The show included the talents of the Ray Charles Singers and announcer Frank Gallop. In 1956 and 1957 he won Emmy awards for most outstanding television personality and the show itself won Peabody and Golden Mike awards. During his tenure with this show he also received the Recording Industry Association of America’s first ever Gold Disc award for his rendition of “”. In one of his most gratifying moments in his career, President Reagan presented Perry Como with a Kennedy Center award for outstanding achievement in the performing arts. He was one of the first musicians to travel to Cuba for a USO show, broadcast by NBC in December of 1956.

Perry’s wife Roselle passed away in 1998 and Perry passed away in May of 2001, six days before his 89th birthday.

On a personal note, my husband Gino Martin was camera man on his NBC show. He said that Perry Como was one of the nicest, kindest of men and a true gentleman. He was very considerate of his guests and crew on the show, never missing an opportunity to let them know they were appreciated. Jenny Martin – Member of the Heritage.
