Its fundraising events receive regular global media coverage and are attended by the most prominent and influential members of the entertainment, fashion, business, and art communities. amfAR’s ability to fund groundbreaking, cure-focused research is due in large part to the money it raises through its many benefit events. Be it small cocktail receptions, art auctions, or international galas, amfAR events play a critically important role in raising funds to support innovative research programs and build HIV/ AIDS awareness domestically and abroad. 4 5 6 7 amfAR New York Gala This high-visibility annual event kicks off New York Fashion Week and honors leading public gures who have made important contributions to the ght against AIDS. The gala attracts leaders from the worlds of fashion, business, entertainment, and the arts.To date, the amfAR New York Gala has raised more than $15 million for amfAR’s life-saving research. Memorable Moments During the 2014 gala, Liam Neeson made a surprise appearance to present amfAR’s Award of courage to Vanessa Redgrave and Joely Richardson. In 2013 amfAR Chairman Kenneth Cole was presented with amfAR’s Award of Courage by New York Governor Andrew Cuomo. amfAR Ambassador Janet Jackson and long-time amfAR supporter Heidi Klum were also honored. The 2011 Gala featured a moving tribute to amfAR Founding International Chairman Dame Elizabeth Taylor delivered by Sir Elton John. President Bill Clinton and amfAR Founding Chairman Dr. Mathilde Krim were also honored. Another highlight of 2011 was a historic reunion performance of “That’s What Friends Are For” by the original artists: Sir Elton John, Gladys Knight, Dionne Warwick, and Stevie Wonder. In 2010, Lady Gaga electried the crowd with her performance at a Terence Koh-designed piano embellished with crushed pearls and M•A•C cosmetics. The evening’s live auction is famous for the impromptu participation of celebrities and one-of-a- kind auction lots. Since amfAR Founding International Chairman Dame Elizabeth Taylor hosted the rst Cinema Against AIDS in 1993, these signature amfAR benets have generated more than $140 million and have played a pivotal role in focusing attention on the ght against AIDS Past events have been chaired by amfAR Global Fundraising Chairman Sharon Stone, President Bill Clinton, Demi Moore, Sir Elton John, and Madonna, among many others. Guests include many of the celebrities and personalities associated with the lm festival. Memorable Moments A stunning gilded woolly mammoth skeleton by Damien Hirst fetched a record $15 million in the 2014 live auction. A 2013 highlight was a dazzling “Ultimate Gold Collection Fashion Show” curated by Carine Roitfeld. In 2008 Madonna auctioned off a one-of-a- kind alligator bag personally designed by Karl Lagerfeld, spicing it up with items from her own purse. Since the rst amfAR Milano in 2009, the annual black-tie event, held during Milan Fashion Week, has raised more than $7 million. Memorable Moments Rosario Dawson wrapped up the 2014 auction by announcing a surprise item—a promotional poster of Grace Jones’ 1981 album Nightclubbing that was signed by Jones herself backstage shortly before it was auctioned off. amfAR’s Global Fundraising Chairman Sharon Stone led a spirited auction at the 2012 event. In a 2011 highlight, Raphael Saadiq invited Grammy Award-winning artist John Legend to join him on stage to perform the song “My Cherie Amour.” President Bill Clinton’s Yamaha alto saxaphone fetched 100,000 Euros in the 2010 live auction. Hosted every year by Cindy and Howard Rachofsky at their Richard Meier-designed home, The Rachofsky House, TWO x TWO for AIDS and Art draws prominent artists, art collectors, and philanthropists from around the world. Initially held on a single evening, TWO x TWO’s enormous success has caused it to evolve into a weeklong series of events. Typically selling out months in advance, the gala features a seated dinner for 500 guests and both live and silent auctions of major works of contemporary art and unique luxury items. Thanks to the phenomenal support of the art community, TWO x TWO has raised more than $52 million in support of amfAR’s AIDS research initiatives and the DMA’s contemporary art acquisition program. Each year features a different design “Inspiration” theme. Since its inception, Inspiration galas have been held in New York, Los Angeles, Paris, São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Toronto, and Miami.
