THE YOUNG IBSEN’S THEATRE AESTHETICS – A THEATRE OF THE OLD, FREE AND MOUNTAINOUS NORTH Anette Storli Andersen Ibsen’s dramas are today world dramas – not primarily as literature or printed books, but as theatre – on stage. The main point of this article is to show two historical examples for how theatre has functioned as a community building institution and to underline the fact that before Ibsen, drama as theatre had played an important part in the making of a common world among Norwegian citizens. I will also suggest how the young Ibsen profited from these established theatre traditions during his practical theatre career – before he dissociated himself from Norwegian theatre and the Norwegian national character in 1864. This means that I disagree with Benedict Anderson (1991, 44) when he argues that the development of printed national languages laid the basis for national consciousness and accordingly also for the modern nation state. When Ibsen and his contemporaries were fighting for a Norwegian theatre and theatre aesthetics in the 1850s and early 1860s, a written Norwegian language, which was distinctly different from written Danish, did not exist. The literary market was marginal compared to the market for theatre performances. Thus, theatre was the most important institution for strengthening the national consciousness. This position is underlined by Ibsen’s artistic career: Until the early 1860s, Ibsen got most of his income from the theatre and his dramas were first performed on stage and then printed later on – if printed at all. When the Norwegian constitution was made in 1814, the written language was Danish. -

OECD Studies in Risk Management OECD Studies Norway in Risk Management TUNNEL SAFETY Looking back on the disasters of recent years alone (the Indian Ocean tsunami disaster, Hurricane Katrina, terrorist attacks in New York, Madrid and London, avian flu, the 2003 heat wave in Europe), one could Norway be forgiven for thinking that we live in an increasingly dangerous world. A variety of forces are helping to shape the risks that affect us, from demographic evolutions to climate change, through the development TUNNEL SAFETY of mega-cities and the rise of information technology. These changes are clearly a major challenge for risk management systems in OECD countries, which have occasionally proved unable to protect the life and welfare of citizens or the continuity of economic activity. The OECD Futures Project on Risk Management Policies was launched in 2003 in order to assist OECD countries in identifying the challenges of managing risks in the 21st century, and help them reflect on how best to address those challenges. The focus is on the consistency of risk management policies and on their ability to deal with the challenges, present and future, created by systemic risks. The Project covers a range of risk management issues which were proposed by the participating countries and together form three thematic clusters: natural disasters, risks to critical infrastructures, and the protection of vulnerable population groups. In the first phase of the Project, the OECD Secretariat prepared a case study for each issue. The studies cover both recent international developments of interest and the national policy context, and come with a tool for self-assessment to be used later in the Project in order to review the national policies in question. -

Photo: Øystein Grue Time for trains The past year marked the 150th anniversary of the railways in Norway and proved a worthy celebration. Punctuality has never been better, rail traffic is growing, and in summer 2004 the Norwegian Parliament took the historic decision to invest NOK 26.4 billion in developing a competitive rail network over the ten years from 2006 to 2015. In other words, the anniversary year not only provided the opportunity for a nostalgic look back, but also confirmed that the railways will continue to play a central role in the years ahead. In line with Parliament’s decision, value our good working relationship with autumn 2005. This brings us one step clo- Jernbaneverket has drawn up an action the trade unions. The meeting is the second in an ambitious series of international cancer meetings initiated and generously funded by Norsk Hydro’s Fund for Cancer Research at the Institute for Cancer Research. For us in CAST Cancer Stem Cell Innovation Centre, though, it is our first meeting of this calibre, and it has been a challenge and given us some worries to plan all the details. We hope it will turn out to be a success, which would be mostly due to the fantastic panel of top level speakers selected by our scientific advisory board, and your own active participation. As we had a very good response from the invited speakers, the programme may be a bit busy, but we hope you will have good opportunity for interaction during the breaks and the more social evening events. -
