Even though most Norwegians are out of town enjoying their holidays, there is still a lot happening in the Oslo region. This Weekend Suggestions will cover the next three weeks. Here are our suggestions for you!

Always online Oslo Visitor Centre will be cycling around with a free Wi-Fi-hotspot all summer. The bike will be based at Egertorget at the centre of Karl Johans gate and it will be staffed by two multilingual Oslo experts, who will provide great tips on how to make the most of your time in Oslo. While you are talking to them, you can log on to the Wi-Fi and download the VisitOSLO’s app! Free Oslo maps and brochures will also be available. You will find the Wi-Fi bicycle until August 31, Monday – Saturday from 08:00 – 20:00 and Sunday from 09:00 – 18:00. Photo: visitoslo.com

MAJOR EVENTS/FESTIVALS

Byfestival, Sukkerbiten, July 16 at 14:00 Dansekollektivet, an association of dancers and dance enthusiasts, holds a one-day dance festival at Sukkerbiten in Bjørvika, featuring several performances. Vestkanttorvet, Saturdays until December 17 from 08:00 - 16:00 Bric-a-brac/antiques market close to Vigeland Park, on the corner of Professor Dahls gate and Neuberggata. Summer Evening Cruise, Rådhusbrygge 3, until September 4 from 19:00 – 22:00 Evening fjord cruise on a traditional wooden sailing ship, passing through a maze of green islands. The tour lasts for three hours, and included in the price is a traditional Norwegian prawn buffet with prawns “au naturelle”, lemon, mayonnaise, bread and butter. Drinks for sale on board. Mini Cruise: Hop on-hop off, until September 25, Mon – Sun from 09:45 - 15:15 Hop on-hop off boat trip on a traditional sailing ship between Oslo City Hall, the Opera House, and Bygdøy. The ticket is valid for 24 hours. This inner Oslo Fjord cruise starts by City Hall, passes on the way to the Opera House, then continues to the museums on Bygdøy peninsula before returning to City Hall. Blues Cruise: The Ton up Gang, Rådhusbrygge 3, July 16, 23 and 30 at 19:00 Enjoy live blues music on a three-hour cruise on an old, traditional wooden sailing ship. A Norwegian shrimp buffet (“au naturelle” with lemon, mayonnaise, bread and butter) is included in the price. The ship departs from City Hall Pier 3. Art Night, Astrup Fearnley Museet, July 28 from 17:00 - 22:00 One Thursday a month Astrup Fearnley invites visitors to their temporary exhibition for only NOK 50,- The museum bar VINGEN serves their special cocktails, and there is music by guest artists. On July 28 it will be possible to appreciate the exhibition #AlexIsrael until 22.00, and discover more about the art during special presentations by the knowledgeable museum hosts at 19.30 and 20.30. Oslo Promenade, until September 9 at 17:30 Oslo Promenade is a two-hour guided walking tour of Oslo on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays in summer. The walk will take you past Akershus Fortress, across “Kvadraturen”- the old part of Oslo, and up the Karl Johan pedestrian street towards the Royal Palace. The tour starts on the sea side of the City Hall at 17:30 and ends outside the National Theatre at 19:30. Guiding in English and Norwegian. Tickets on site. Address: Rådhusplassen 1

Guided Tour of the Opera House, Den Norske Opera & Ballett The spectacular Opera House was designed by the Norwegian architecture firm Snøhetta. Audiences can enjoy world-class opera and concerts on three stages. The Main Auditorium has 1369 seats, Stage 2 has 400 seats and Rehearsal Stage 1 seats 200 people. The tours give you a chance to learn more about the architecture and catch a glimpse of life backstage. Click here for more information and tickets. The guided tour takes visitors through some of the most beautiful state rooms in the Royal Palace: Cabinet Cloakroom, Cabinet Parlour, Council Chamber, White Parlour, King Haakon VII Suite, Upper Vestibule, Bird Room, Mirror Hall, Family Dining Room, Small Ceremonial Hall, Great Hall and the Banqueting Hall. CONCERTS

Balcony Concert, Den Norske Opera & Ballett, until July 21 True to tradition, Oslo’s Opera House offers chamber concerts on the first balcony in the opera foyer in July. This summer’s programme includes a total of ten concerts, where both young talents and experienced musicians perform in a chamber format. Concerts last for approximately one hour. High Plains Jamboree, Buckleys, July 15 at 22:00 High Plains Jamboree is described as a bluegrass band west of the Mississippi, and a country band east of the Mississippi. Gogol Bordello, Sukkerbiten, July 20 at 19:00 Gogol Bordello is a crazy, energetic mix of punk, rock, Balkan folk, flamenco, reggae and dub. Mudhoney, Parkteatret Scene, July 21 at 20:00 Mudhoney from Seattle is a veteran band of the punk and grunge scene. They broke through before Nirvana, but realised that the life of a world renowned band wasn’t for them. They may now be considered the world’s most famous part ime band with a very exclusive tour schedule. If you don’t see them in Oslo this summer, you might not get the chance again any time soon. Vandreteater på Akershus Festning, July 1 - August 14 at 12:00 Walk through 700 years of history at Akershus Fortress! Professional actors as well as the audience move around on the fortress grounds. Sofie Reed, Buckleys, July 16 at 16:00 Blues/folk/roots artist Sofie Reed is a one man-band who writes and performs her own songs, plays the dulcimer, lap steel, ukulele and harmonica while trampling on an old wooden box. Ruffen og den Flyvende Hollender, Vigelandsparken, Circus Tent by the Monolith, until July 10 Children’s theatre (in Norwegian). In the middle of a summer dressed Frogner Park, by the monolith, you will find a traditional cultural summer activity for the whole family. Ruffen og den Flyvende Hollender (Ruffen and the Flying Dutchman). How big must one be to be able to help? Ruffen is a small sea serpent living on an island that is invisible to humans. One day, Ruffen spots the Flying Dutchman - a ghost ship with a captain doomed to sail restlessly around the seven seas forever. Karius og Baktus, Vigelandsparken, Circus Tent by the Monolith, until July 31 Children’s theatre (in Norwegian). The main characters, Karius and Baktus, are puns on Caries and Bacteria, and they are two small “tooth trolls” that live inside cavities in the teeth of a boy named Jens. They have a very good life, especially when Jens eats white bread with syrup and fails to brush his teeth afterwards. Eventually their homes are destroyed by the work of a dentist and they are rinsed out of Jens’ mouth through proper dental care. With its humorous illustrations and important message, the story of Karius and Baktus has become a classic of Norwegian children’s literature. Norway Cup, Ekebergsletta, July 31 – August 6 International football tournament for children and youth ages 10-19, organised by Bækkelagets Sportsklub. Norway Cup has been an annual event since 1972, and is one of the largest tournaments of its kind in the world, with 30,000 participants from all parts of the globe. The tournament lasts for one week, starting at the end of July/ beginning of August every year. Fun activities at Ekebergsletta during the games include concerts, miniature golf, a celebrity match, a fun fair, competitions and much more. Click here for more information.

Olavs Hall and “Tusen rike år ” - a gift to the city, Borgarsyssel Museum, July 29 from 11:00 – 19:30 Borgarsyssel Museum’s contribution to the city of Sarpsborg and its population on the occasion of its 1000 year anniversary is Olavs Hall, a brand new building filled with history, exhibitions and a thirty meter high watchtower. On July 29, His Majesty King Harald will inaugurate Olavs hall, a 900 m2 building that will accommodate multiple exhibitions, a shop and a café.
