The Nobel Committee has announced that the 2017 Nobel Peace Prize will be given to ICAN (International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons). ICAN is an Australian organization, based in Switzerland, dedicated to creating a world without nuclear weapons. According to announcement from the Nobel Committee, ICAN is given the prize for its work to “draw attention to the catastrophic humanitarian consequences of any use of nuclear weapons and for its ground-breaking efforts to achieve a treaty-based prohibition of such weapons”. The ceremony takes place on December 10th in Oslo City Hall. Enjoy our weekend suggestions! USEFUL INFORMATION October is the month of the Pink Ribbon. The Pink Ribbon is dedicated to raising breast cancer awareness and funding for breast cancer research. It is an internationally operating charity organisation aiming to create a global community to support breast cancer patients, survivors and their families all over the world, covering more than 30 countries over 5 continents. This autumn "Harry Styles Live On Tour" begins on a selection of intimate stages around the world. Part two of the tour begins in Switzerland in March 2018 and will arrive in Oslo shortly after. Tickets Photo: VisitOslo.com Toto Oslo Spectrum 16th February 2018 Toto are celebrating their 40th anniversary in 2018, and will be releasing the album 40 Trips Around The Sun, and going on tour. The band’s coming album will contain classic tracks remastered, as well as new hits. Few bands defined the sound of the 80s like Toto. Known for their impeccable blending of rock, pop, soul, funk, prog rock, hard rock, R‘n’B and jazz, Toto had their commercial breakthrough in and all through the 1980s with a row of unforgettable soft-rock hits. Tickets Photo: VisitOslo.com MARKETS Vestkanttorvet Bric-a-brac/antiques market, Saturday 14th October Oslo's oldest and largest market, with furniture, china, glass, kitchenware, paintings, silver, jewellery, clothes, glass and all kinds of collector's items. The bric-a-brac/ antiques market is located on the corner of Professor Dahls gate and Neuberggata, not far from Vigeland Park. Open on Saturdays from Mar-Dec. Birkelunden bric-a-brac market, Sunday 15th October Outdoor market at Birkelunden with used items from the 40s to the 00s. Sunday market around Blå, 15st October Sundays all year there is a handicraft and second-hand market around Blå at Grünerløkka: Knit wear, jewellery, ceramics, glass, wool, clothes, toys, paintings, bags etc. Farmers Market in the Botanical garden 15th October. Market where you can buy fresh products directly from the farmers themselves. Buy local foods from the people who grew and made them! EXHIBITIONS David Yarrow - The untouchables Until 15th October, 10:00 – 18:00, at Galleri Fineart Exhibition of works by the acclaimed Scottish photographer David Yarrow. Yarrow has travelled with his camera to some of the world's most isolated places, and is known for capturing unique images of wildlife, indigenous communities and landscapes. The untouchables is Yarrow's first exhibition in Norway. It contains more than 70 works, including a new photo series. Address: Filipstad brygge 2 Photo: VisitOslo.com Find the plastic Natural History Museum, 29th September – 22nd December, 11:00- 16-00 Plastic has become one of the world's largest environmental problems. The material doesn't belong in the nature, still we find it everywhere: In the mountains, in the forests and in the sea. Several of the exhibitions at the Museum of Natural History show animals in their natural habitats. Now, the museum has deliberately littered the exhibitions with plastic, to more accurately reflect today's reality. The exhibition includes an activity booklet for children (in Norwegian), where you can learn about the problems associated with plastic and get new ideas as to how the consumption of plastic can be reduced. Address: Sars’ gate 1 CONCERTS Oslo Philharmonic - Golden Age of Hollywood Oslo Concert hall, 12th -13th October at 19:00 Music from the golden age of Hollywood! Film music is the classical music of our time. The evening is dedicated to the greatest music Hollywood has ever produced, with instantly recognisable music from films like Gone with the Wind, Psycho, Ben Hur and Star Wars. Slapstick, surprising comedy and masterful musicality combine when Mnozil performs for the masses. In Cirque, which according to themselves is organised like a flea circus where they once again examine the depth of their instruments. Mnozil Brass hails from Austria and was formed in 1992 by students from Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst Wien who met at the pub Mnozil. Together with bands such as R.E.M., Violent Femmes, Green on Red, The Bangles and The Cramps, they were part of the Los Angeles-based music scene known as Paisley Underground. Since the 1981 formation of IQ, the band has seen many line-up changes, but the core lives on, having released 11 albums since then. FoodBeat is held in the Botanical Gardens on the day before (Sunday October 15), and is a chance for everyone who wants to learn about urban agriculture, innovations in growing food or to get to know Oslo's farmers. This event is free, and open for everyone.
