Whisky List Welcome to Our Whisky List WHISKY LIST WELCOME TO OUR WHISKY LIST It may not surprise you to hear that we are big whisky fans here at The Glenturret. We don’t just love our own whisky, but have a deep appreciation and genuine passion for all single malts. In curating this list, we really want to showcase some of Scotland’s finest malts. Some of the whiskies that made our list are really iconic pours, others are just tremendous drams that represent the best releases from a particular distillery in recent times. We also dug deep into our own archives to present you with rare Glenturret through the ages - it really is a treat to see how our distillation has developed through the decades. As in life, it is good to ask questions, and our bar team will be delighted to help you choose the right dram for you, answer your burning questions about whisky-making, or just help you find the best way to enjoy your dram. There are myriad options, but the only ‘right’ way to enjoy a dram is the one that gives you most pleasure Slainte! Scotland, my auld, respected mither! Tho’ whiles ye moistify your leather, Till, whare ye sit on craps o’ heather, Ye tine your dam; Freedom an’ whisky gang thegither! Take aff your dram! WHISKY MENU SCOTLAND’S DISTILLERY REGIONS Highland INVERNESS Speyside ABERDEEN ISLANDS Islay GLASGOW EDINBURGH Campeltown Lowland SPEYSIDE INVERNESS Speyside ABERDEEN GLASGOW EDINBURGH The region gets its name from the River Spey which carves its way through the area, supplying the distilleries with what becomes ‘uisge-beatha’. This is the heartland of whisky and is a popular destination for whisky enthusiasts from all around the world. Many come to devote themselves to the Holy Mother of Malts! Home to over half of the distilleries around Scotland, it is a treat to discover an array of aromas and flavours that will leave you wanting more. Famous for light, fruity characteristics, each distillery has its own unique quirks, creating a very long bucket list of distilleries to sample. SPEYSIDE ABERLOUR DISTILLERY Aberlour translates to Obar Lobhair in Gaelic meaning ‘the mouth of the talkative or noisy stream’, and was founded by James Fleming in 1879, whose family motto is, ‘Let the deed show”. The distillery is supplied by the Rivers Lour and Spey, which is a short distance from Ben Rinnes and is in the heart of Speyside. As a little curiosity, the distillery pours a bottle of Aberlour 12-year-old into the River Spey every year, to mark the start of the salmon fishing season in February. This little ritual is to ‘bless’ the water in hope of a good fishing season for locals.

  • Distilleries Scotch Whisky Is the World’S Leading International Spirit Drink, Exported to Over 200 Markets
Did You Know? Distilleries Scotch Whisky is the world’s leading international spirit drink, exported to over 200 markets. to Visit Whisky can only be called Scotch if it is distilled and matured in Scotland. This is defined in UK and EU law, and is accepted internationally, ensuring that when you buy Scotch Whisky you can be sure you are getting the real thing. 2011 Single Grain Scotch Whisky, a key component of blended whiskies, are Scotch Whiskies in their own right. Their characteristics are as individual as those of each Single Malt Scotch Whisky. A pub measure of Scotch Whisky contains only 50 calories – less than a standard glass of wine or half pint of beer. The French drink more Scotch Whisky in a month than Cognac in a year. The “cup o’ kindness” in the familiar New Year song, Auld Lang Syne, written by Scotland’s Robbie Burns, refers to Scotch Whisky, the spirit of friendship. Queen Victoria, responsible in part for creating a demand for Scotch Whisky outside Scotland, used to enjoy a daily dram in her tea. Scotch Whisky distilleries play an important role in welcoming visitors to Scotland. Around one million people visit distilleries each year. Scotch Whisky is matured over many years – it should be savoured. • Whiskey – Uisce Beatha – the Water of Life
Whiskey – Uisce Beatha – The Water of Life Both Ireland & Scotland lay claim to the origins of whiskey, and both have long histories of distillation. Whiskey is made by crushing grain to create a grist, to which water is added to create a mash. This mash is boiled to release sugars and then cooled. Yeast is added to start fermentation, which consumes the yeast creating alcohol. The liquid – which is actually beer - is drained off and distilled using a still and then is aged in barrel for an appropriate amount of time. These processes are individualized by each producer – different grains, the use of peat in the malting process, alternative casks – these are only a few ways that a producer creates a distinct and unique beverage. Whiskey is made around the world and we are pleased to carry a varied selection from Ireland, Scotland, Canada, the United States and Japan.
