  • Improving Safety for Motorcycle, Scooter and Moped Riders Motorcycle, for Scootermoped and Improving Safety Improving Safety for Motorcycle, Scooter and Moped Riders
Improving SafetyImproving and forScooter Moped Motorcycle, Riders Improving Safety for Motorcycle, Scooter and Moped Riders The global fleet of powered two-wheelers (PTWs) is constantly increasing. In many countries, motorcycles, scooters and mopeds play a significant role in mobility, particularly in many of the world’s large cities. As such, PTWs are becoming an important component of the transport system. However, they represent an important challenge for road safety. PTW riders are at far more risk than car drivers per kilometre ridden in terms of fatalities and severe injuries entailing long-term disability. Moreover, they have not benefited from safety improvements at the same pace as car occupants over recent decades. Addressing the issue of PTW safety is thus an essential contribution to the success of the United Nations’ Decade of Action for Road Safety, which aims at halving the expected number of road deaths worldwide by 2020. This report reviews recent trends in powered two-wheeler crashes, the factors contributing to these crashes and their severity. It describes a set of countermeasures targeting user behaviours, the use of protective equipment, the vehicles and the infrastructure. Finally, it discusses motorcycle safety strategies in the context of a safe system. Copyright © 1998 by the South Dakota State Historical Society. All Rights Reserved. A South Dakota Rendezvous: The Sturgis Motorcycle Rally and Races Carlton L. Bonilla The fur trappers of the early nineteenth century were hardy men, spending months isolated from the civilized world. Each summer, however, these aigged individuals gathered at a designated location to trade pelts, garner sup- plies, and celebrate. Their unique gatherings, known as ren- dezvous, were spectacular events, bringing together trap- pers from throughout the Rocky Mountain West. Today, a new breed of frontiersman has appeared, a modern-day "mountain man" who has replaced tlie pinto of the trapper with die "iron horse of Milwaukee"—the Harley-Davidson motorcycle. Their gathering takes place each year in Sturgis, South Dakota, with all the grandeur and excitement of the original assemblies. Known variously as the Black Hills Motor Classic, Sturgis Rally and Races, or simply, "Sturgis," the event is the rendezvous of the twentieth century, bring- ing together people from all over the world for cama- raderie, commerce, and entertainment. The traditional rendezvous began in .1825, when William H. Ashley, a fitr-trade entrepreneur from Saint Louis, took a supply train to the central Rockies after broadcasting the time and place of arrival to trappers in the mountains for months beforehand. Upon reaching his destination, Ash- ley provided the trappers with a year's worth of supplies Copyright © 1998 by the South Dakota State Historical Society. And there is probably nothing more spiritually tied to that sojourner’s dream than Route 66, the “Main Street of America”. Indeed, the beauty of this country and the fun of its people are both to be found along this fabled ribbon of asphalt in addition to some “crazy by-way kitsch” that is the source of both memories and amusement. Join me as I begin this journey and travel this 2,500 mile thoroughfare from Chicago to Santa Monica stopping at many places along the way. In this first piece I pay tribute to the motorcyclist and their modern day iron horses. Look closely in the painting and you might recognize one of film’s earliest two-wheeled rebels as well as a notorious easy rider. I have also placed references to some of the most noted makes of motorcycle for you to discover as you explore my canvas. My grandfather loved the lure of the open road, a feeling that was translated to my father and uncle and now to me and my own brothers. The joy of the ride is often as satisfying as the destination and so it is in this case. There will be several stops on this trip and further tributes to be paid.

  • Motorcycles Registered in the United States, 2002–18
Motorcycles registered in the United States, 2002–18 January 2019 Eric R. Teoh Insurance Institute for Highway Safety The following tables summarize the U.S. motorcycle population between 2002 and 2018, based on Insurance Institute of Highway Safety (IIHS) analyses of data provided by IHS Markit. Registration counts as of January 1 of each year were provided by year, state, and Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) pattern (first 10 digits). The Highway Loss Data Institute (HLDI) decoded VIN patterns to determine make, series, and model year, and information maintained by HLDI on motorcycle type and antilock braking system (ABS) availability were appended to each record by make/series/model year. Only on- road classes of motorcycles were included. Since the VIN information is constantly improving, the counts in this paper may differ slightly from the previous version. Selected observations • The number of on-road motorcycles registered in the U.S. has been generally increasing throughout these years, doubling from 4.2 million in 2002 to 8.3 million in 2018 (Table 1). Registrations declined from 2017 to 2018 to slightly below the 2015 number. • California and Florida have the largest number of registered motorcycles by large margins. • Cruisers and touring bikes are the largest classes of registered motorcycles (Table 2). • Choppers are a relatively new class designation from manufacturers. This class probably is undercounted, as similar motorcycles are custom builds and not identifiable from VIN numbers. • Scooter registrations have been increasing but also may be undercounted, as many have engines smaller than 50 cubic centimeters (cc) and state laws (including registration requirements) vary widely for vehicles with such small engines.
