Sequence homology among these species and individuals of the same species was compared. It was found that interspecific variation was much higher than intraspecific variation and the identity of the concerned reptiles could be revealed by their DNA sequences. -

NUMBER 1839 AUGUST 19, 1957 A New Species of Boa (Genus Tropidophis) from Western Cuba BY ALBERT SCHWARTZ' Stull (1928), in her revision of the boas of the genus Tropidophis, recognized five forms on the island of Cuba: Tropidophis maculatus maculatus (Bibron), T. pardalis pardalis (Gundlach), T. wrighti Stull, T. melanurus melanurus (Schlegel), and T. semicinctus (Gundlach and Peters). Bailey (1937) later described two additional forms, T. nigri- ventris and T. maculatus pilsbryi. Thus, as presently understood, there are six species of the genus Tropidophis on Cuba, one of which is rep- resented by two subspecies. All the Cuban forms are not equally common or well represented in collections; wrighti, for example, is known only from the type and two additional specimens, and may thus be considered either as rare or as occurring in little-collected areas on the island. Likewise, nigriventris is known from but two specimens and T. m. pilsbryi by only three individuals. On the other hand, melanurus is a widespread form and is well represented in American collections. In the West Indies, the genus Tropidophis is best represented on the island of Cuba with seven forms. Jamaica and Hispaniola each have a single form, in both cases insular races of T. maculatus. The Isle of Pines is inhabited by three forms, currently regarded as identical with the three species occurring on Cuba, T. m. maculatus, T. p. pardalis, and T. m.. melanurus. These investigations will benefit greatly from Schwartz and Thomas' (1975) recent checklist, the first taxonomic summary in several decades. The present lists, which started as an ecology class project at the College of the Virgin Islands, are largely a compilation of Schwartz and Thomas' locality records. Our lists are useful in themselves, serve as a geographical index to Schwartz and Thomas, and should encourage more complete documentation of distributions. 627 islands are listed, some without records of reptiles or amphibians. Areas and maximum elevations are given vrtierever available. We have included everything that has a name, could support terrestrial vertebrates, and was not obviously a rock periodically awash. Even so, the list is far from complete. We have included the islands off the South and Central American coasts, many of which have more or less West Indian faunae and which are frequented by students of Antillean biota. Records from these islands are mostly from sources other than Schwartz and Thomas, as are a few in the Antilles proper. All such records are footnoted. We have not identified introduced species. Any student of these animals will immediately recognize the obvious introductions and will have personal opinions concerning the many nebulous cases. -

USA (Accepted 22 June 1995) (With 6 figures in the text) We present an initial evaluation of relationships among a diverse sample of 215 species of snakes (8% of the world snake fauna) representing nine ofthe 16 commonly-recognized families. Allelic variation at four slow-evolving. protein-coding loci. detected by starch-gel electrophoresis. was found to be informative for estimating relationships among these species at several levels. The numerous alleles detected at these loci [Acp-2 (42 alleles). Ldh-2 (43). Mdh-I (29). Pgm (25)] provided unexpected clarity in partitioning these taxa. Most congeneric species and several closely-related genera have the same allele at all four loci or differ at only a single locus. At the other extreme are those species with three or four unique alleles: these taxa cannot be placed in this analysis. Species sharing two or three distinctive alleles are those most clearly separated into clades. Typhlopids. pythonids. viperids. and elapids were resolved into individual clades, whereas boids were separated into boines and erycines, and colubrids appeared as several distinct clades (colubrines. natricines. psammophines, homalopsines, and xenodontines). Viper ids were recognized as a major division containing three separate clades: Asian and American crotalines, Palaearctic and Oriental viperines, and Ethiopian causines. The typhlopids were found to be the basal clade. -

RESUMEN: Los cerros de Maniabón son un área prioritaria para manejo y conservación de la herpetofauna en la provincia de Holguín. Este estudio pretende caracterizar la diversidad de anfibios y reptiles, así como identificar sus principales amenazas y proponer medidas para su conservación, en la localidad de “El Resbaladero”, provincia de Holguín. Se efectuaron tres expediciones al área de estudio: del 20 al 23 de febrero y del 3 al 6 de agosto de 2019, y el 4 de enero de 2020. Se inspeccionaron, en recorridos de 1 h de duración, las formaciones vegetales bosque semideciduo, cuabales, bosque de galería y vegetación secundaria. Fue empleado el índice de similitud de Jaccard para evaluar la similitud biológica entre formaciones vegetales por composición de especies faunísticas. La riqueza de especies acumulada para el área de estudio fue de siete anfibios y 22 reptiles, representando el 25,9 % y el 28,6 %, respectivamente, de la diversidad reportada para cada grupo en la provincia de Holguín. El resultado del índice de Jaccard mostró una alta similitud biológica entre todas las formaciones vegetales. -

Resumen Se realizó el inventario físico de las serpientes del género Tropidophis presentes en la colección herpetológica del Instituto de Ecología y Sistemática, La Habana, Cuba. Se detectaron errores en números de etiquetas y tarjetas repetidas o faltantes. A partir de arreglar los errores se confeccionaron 73 tarjetas y 125 etiquetas nuevas; se catalogaron 90 ejemplares; se introdujeron 118 registros nuevos en hojas de Excel; se preparó el catálogo en procesador de texto en soporte digital. En la colección están 14 de las 16 especies del género descritas para Cuba. Se hallaron 322 ejemplares, recolectados en las 15 provincias y el municipio especial Isla de la Juventud. Las provincias que tienen mayor número son La Habana, Pinar del Río y Artemisa y las de menores números son Cienfuegos y Granma (2). Los recolectores que han aportado más ejemplares son Luis V. Moreno (66), Julio Novo (46), Miguel L. Jaume (32) y Orlando H. Garrido (21). La etapa en que ha habido mayor número de capturas es la de 1970 a 1989 (119) y la de menor, entre el año 2000 y el presente (21). -

Cuban Amazon Tour Summary 16 Feb: Niña Bonita Lake, just outside of Havana, was our first birding stop of the tour. Seasonally, this freshwater lake holds numerous species of waterfowl. It just stopped raining as we arrived and species that we scoped included Lesser Scaup, Ring-necked Duck, Northern Shoveler, Blue-winged Teal, Ruddy Duck and a single drake American Wigeon. Pied- billed Grebes were present in good numbers, as well as American Coots. We saw several herons and egrets, as expected, but two flyover Roseate Spoonbills were a nice surprise! Two Palm Warblers at the parking were the first of many more to come. We soon continued our journey westward to Las Terrazas to search for some of our very first Cuban endemics. The localised Cuban Grassquit was our main target for the day, so we immediately went to a hotspot for this attractive endemic. At the henhouse of a hacienda, we detected a flock of grassquits foraging on the ground. The majority of them were Cuban Grassquits, with a few Yellow-faced Grassquits mixed in as well. The lady at the hacienda saw that we were interested in the grassquits so she put out some food and very soon we watched both species of grassquits at point-blank range! Our first Cuban Trogon flew in and perched right above our heads.
