THIS WEEK: THE REASON FOR OUR HOPE - “What is the reason for your hope?” Imagine somebody coming up to you and asking you that question. Not “What are you hoping for?” SATURDAY, MAY 16TH/ or “What are you hoping to do?” No, this isn’t about our desires for possessions or aspirations for life, it’s “Why do you hope?” Peter today tells us that we ought to be SUNDAY, MAY 17TH, ready to give an answer to this question. Truth be told, few of us spend much time thinking about why we hope. Luckily, the scriptures today give us our answers. We hope 2020 because Christ suffered for us, in order that we might come to God. We hope because we know that, in the Spirit, God grants us another Advocate through Christ to remain with us SIXTH SUNDAY always. No matter what we might hope for, whatever we might hope to do, we must always first know and proclaim the reason for our hope: the presence of God in Christ, OF EASTER with us through the power of the Spirit.

SIXTH SUNDAY OF EASTER - As Jesus prepared the apostles for the time when he Mary, May and the Rosary! would no longer be with them physically, and knowing that they would face hardship,

The Rosary: The spiritual sword of Mary trials, and persecution in the future, he promised them an Advocate, the Holy Spirit. Through baptism that same Spirit dwells within us, always with us to guide us in the truth Did you know that when Mary gave the rosary to St. Dominic in of God’s love and strengthen us so that we may know Christ and live as Christ’s people. 1208, she told him that it was a weapon against the forces of Now, as in every time, God knows it is not always easy to live as a Christian. With the darkness? It’s true. After that event, the Dominicans and almost all other assurance of the Holy Spirit’s presence, we find the grace to love Jesus and to keep the religious communities began to wear the rosary as part of their religious habit. STRENGTHENED TO LIVE AS CHRIST’S OWN - We might look at the world Even today, almost all religious communities that have the rosary as part of their around us and conclude that this is the most challenging time in history during which to habit wear it on their left side to signify that it is a sword ready to be live as a person of faith. Yet we know this is not so. Throughout the ages, people of faith “unsheathed” and taken into spiritual battle. Throughout history there have have faced mockery, persecution, and even death as a result of their commitment to Christ. been numerous others who have championed the rosary and helped spread it to Still, it is important for us to acknowledge the challenge of living as a Christian today, when faith is viewed with ambivalence at best, and often with antagonism. Some do not the ends of the earth. There are even papal champions of the rosary, like St. Pope understand how faith and reason can sit side by side, even though many of the world’s Pius V. This incredible Pope is responsible for saving Western civilization from greatest scientific discoveries have been made by people of faith. Others see the failures of Islamic takeover, and he did it through the rosary and a Holy League of men the Church or its leaders and discount faith as a result. We rely on the powerful presence of willing to defend Christianity. Other papal champions of the rosary, such as the Holy Spirit to be with us when we are mocked or simply misunderstood on account of Pope Leo XIII and St. Pope John Paul II, wrote important documents on the our faith in Jesus Christ. Through the Holy Spirit, we will find the grace to live with conviction as Christian people. rosary and helped spread the devotion far and wide. Pope Leo XIII wrote 11 THE REASON FOR OUR HOPE - Peter admonishes us, “Always be ready to give encyclicals on the rosary, and St. John Paul II re-sharpened the ancient blade of an explanation to anyone who asks you for a reason for your hope.” One of the greatest gifts the rosary by turning it into a modern-day light saber by offering the Church the of faith in our lives is our hope in Christ Jesus. Through Christ, we keep our eyes on the Luminous Mysteries. History has also witnessed like St. Louis de Montfort wider view of life here on earth and everlasting life with God. Stays Together.” - Fr. Patrick Peyton Saint Anastasia was born in 281 A.D. and became a perfect symbol of peace, humanity, and solidarity. Her Feast Day is December 25th. She is a symbol of dialogue and collaboration. In her spirit, and in the spirit of love, we welcome all to the Catholic Community of St. Anastasia Catholic Church.

St. Rita of Cascia - St. Rita of Cascia was born around 1381, as Margherita Lotti, in a small suburb of Umbria, Italy. In a Parish Church in Belgium, there is a statue of Rita with bees around her head. A story is told, that the day after her Baptism, her family noticed a swarm of white bees flying around her crib as she slept. The bees were peacefully entering and exiting her mouth. Her parents weren’t afraid, they believed that Rita was destined to be virtuous and devoted to God. Rita wanted to enter the convent, but instead, her parents arranged for her to be married to provide safety and security, to a man named, Paolo Mancini. Rita became a wife and mother at only 12 years of age. Her husband was cruel and had a bad temper and often became angry and mistreated, Rita, verbally and physically. Paolo Mancini pursued other women and had many enemies. But, Rita’s influence eventually helped him to become a better man. Paolo Mancini’s family had a feud for many years with the Chiquis family, but he renounced the feud, and when things heated up again, Paolo was killed by one of his allies who betrayed him. After her husband’s death, Rita forgave his murderers, but Paolo’s brothers sought revenge and Rita’s two sons joined the feud. The sons became like their father when he was young. Rita tried to stop her sons, before they lost their souls, by committing murder. Rita prayed to God, asking him to take her sons before they committed a mortal sin. One year later, they both died from dysentery. After the death of her sons, Rita attempted to enter the of St. Mary Magdalene in Cascia, but they refused her. Although she was prayerful, with a good character, the Order feared her connection with her husband’s family feud. They told Rita she could only enter by mending the feud, between the Mancini’s and the Chiquis family. Rita prayed to St. John the Baptist, St. Augustine and St. Nicholas to help her end the feud. The Bubonic plague was spreading through Italy at the time, and when Bernard Mancini became infected, he finally ended the feud with the Chiquis family. Rita was now allowed to enter the Monastery at age 36. Catholic legends tell us, that she was transported, by her three helpful saints, at night, into the garden courtyard by way of levitation. Rita was faithful and received the sacraments often. She followed the Augustinian Rules and had a great devotion to the Passion of Christ. When she was 60 years old, she asked, “ Please let me suffer like you, Divine Savior.” Soon after, a deep wound appeared on her forehead, that never healed and gave her much pain the rest of her life. It was like a partial stigmata, as if a thorn had pierced her forehead. Near the end of her life, she was bedridden with Tuberculosis. One day she asked her cousin to bring a rose from the family garden. It was January, and her cousin didn’t expect to find any roses. But there was one, single, rose in bloom, which she brought back to Rita. Rita passed away four months later, on May 22, 1457. Following her death, she was buried at the Basilica of Cascia. Later they found her body to be incorrupt. So they proceeded to build a shrine and they moved her to the Saint Rita Shrine in Cascia. Her body can be seen even to today at the Shine. Rita is known, as, “The Saint of Impossible Cases.” She is shown with a wound on her head holding a rose or surrounded by bees. In some images, she carries a crucifix or a palm leaf with three thorns representing her husband and two sons. She is also patron of difficult marriages and parenthood, sterility, loneliness, abuse victims, the sick, and wounds. She was canonized by Pope Leo XIII in 1900. Faith for Kids “How shall I make a return to the Lord for all the great good done for me?” - Psalm 116:12 What if you tried to pay back all the people who have done good things for you all your life? That would be pretty hard to do. But you can still say “thank you.” You can show your gratitude in your actions: listening, helping and treating them with respect and love (even when you don’t feel like it). But how can anyone possibly thank God for all He has done? Well, you can thank God in yours prayers. You can show your gratitude by sharing His love with others and by treating the gifts He’s given you with respect. So, how will you thank God for His gifts today? Loving God, help me thank You with my actions !

What’s Happening in the Parish Office during this Pandemic Experience?

Here are some interesting stories from some of the employees. Enjoy them.

Chris, Director of Music Ministry - Hello St. Anastasia parishioners. This is your Music Director, Chris Roque. At this time of year we would usually be celebrating the Rite of Confirmation, and our little 2nd graders would have recently experienced their First Eucharist Mass. While those celebrations are on hold, I am keeping busy with some digital duties. I started our Parish Facebook page where we post daily Masses @9am. We also have music for the Friday Family service @9am and Sunday Mass @10am. We’ve posted some uplifting videos and shared some live-streaming of solo music performances. You can find those videos and look for more coming soon on Facebook. We’ve also made some other adjustments digitally. Our Children’s Choir and Middle School Mass Band are meeting over Zoom. It’s certainly has its limitations, but it’s so nice to see everyone’s faces and the sessions allow us to stay connected, while keeping the music alive within the students. I've been taking time during our home isolation to be creative in different ways. I planted a wildflower garden, that is full of blooms and painted a basketball court on my patio. It's been a blessing to have some outdoor activities to focus on. God's blessings are many. I look forward to hearing all of your voices again, soon. Stay safe.

Nora Jayne, Parish Office Assistant - I will be honest. This reflection is my fifth rewrite in conveying how this pandemic has affected my life professionally, personally, and needless to say, spiritually. The first draft was preachy, the second too personal, the third was all ‘over the place,” and the fourth sounded like everyone else’s, which would be relatable, but I wanted to give just a little more. We all have had to adjust our life- styles on small and larger scales; working from home, zoom meetings, homeschooling with teachers, limited excursions, and enjoying a meal out literally, curbed! Many have not been able to visit loved ones and friends. Some are alone. This is especially hard for me because, I am a HUGGER! Human contact is so fragile and necessary for our wellness, yet because of this virus, it is shunned for the exact same reason we need it, physical and emotional health. Trying to find balance and sure footing in this time of turbulence, fear, and worry may seem unattainable, but that would be a lie. And here my friends is the more. ”Where IS Your FAITH?” Seriously. I hear this in the Scripture readings at Sunday Masses throughout the year, a ‘lifetime.’ Do I believe? YES! Why? Because I finally asked for a drink. I was ”…thirsty and He gave me to drink…” (John 4:13-15) What a faithful Father! I am certain and not the only one, that has wished for more opportunities and time to “do or get more things accomplished.” Well, I have taken this particular situation, we are all in, and turn it into a ‘gift offering.’ A ‘gift offering’ that has given me the time to seek out what is truly valuable and important in life. God, family, health, friends, and prayer. Have I been a Christ-like example in all my ‘roles’ in life, especially as a Mother? Have I shown to others that God listens and answers our prayers? This is what God lead me to as a parent. “Mom, can you help me with my homework? I don’t understand it?” “Until now you have not asked anything in my name; ask and you will receive, so that your joy may be complete…” (John 16:24) “Did you do what you were told?” “Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” (James 4:11) “You are going for a time out. Go to your room and think about what you have done.” “But when you pray, go to your inner room, close the door, and pray to your Father in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will repay you.” (Matthew 6:6) “Did you apologize to your brother/sister?” “Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, heartfelt compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience, bearing with one another and forgiving one another,…as the Lord has forgiven you, so must you also do..” (Colossians 3:12-13) What do you say when someone gives you something?” “And over all these put on love, that is the bond of perfection. And let the peace of Christ control your hearts…and be Thankful.” (Colossians 3:14-15) So, with ‘not knowing’ and yet knowing, I have taught my children and others. Keep praying. Offer it All Up! Let God comfort you in the unknown. We say we don’t know the way or the how, yet, He “…makes a way where we cannot see the way…” (Isaiah 43:19) The fruits will be ripe for the picking. Now, I need to take some lemons and go make a lemon meringue pie! God’s Mighty Love, Goodness and Abundance to you All. See you in Church very soon! “Faith is the substance of what is hoped for and evidence of things not seen.” (Hebrews 11:1)
