I have combined two of the television scripts from the very first BBC 2 series of Fawlty Towers, "The Wedding Party" and "The Hotel Inspectors" into our Two-Act Comedy and trust the purists amongst us will accept the liberties I have taken with the original work written by, the then husband and wife team, John Cleese and Connie Booth. In actual fact, "The Hotel Inspectors" is almost as the original script apart fqr a small amount of substitution with the sexes of two of the characters. "The ivedding Party" did require a certain amount of rewriting and dialogue addition as the original involved too many different bedroom scenes' The role of Manuel is now played for the first time by David Godfrey - his first acting role for the Society - and he has taken great pains to review the original many times to get as close to the poor Spanish wai ter as an Englishman can, who doesn't in real life speak a word of Spanish. Full marks to my cast and crew who have all worked very hard to bring this to you tonight. I was only able to get the play fully cast ten days before opening night. lvhere have all our actors/actresses gone? It wasn't long ago when we had an abundance of both and we couldn't find directors. Now the opposite is the case. Thank you to the Society for appointing me your Chairman for 1993/94 and I promise to give my best, follOWing in the able footsteps of Tony Rowlands. You did a great job, Tony, and I will try and continue your good work. I have an excellent committee with both old and new faces and any ideas you might have, please forward them to me. We have a lot of very exciting productions for 1994 and it all bodes ~vell for your Society. Si t back now wi th me and laugh I til your sides hurt. Kate Bowring Kate's first big break ~vith the CDS came when she was "promoted" from chorus in Cinderella to play Cinderella 's dog! En studie om ironi i undertexterna till Fawlty Towers Denna studie undersöker ironin i undertexterna till TV- komedin Fawlty Towers (Pang i bygget). I undersökningen studerades vilka förändringar som har skett i undertextningen med avseende på ironi vid interlingval översättning. Två översättares svenska undertexter har jämförts med en engelsk muntlig källtext med hjälp av en modifierad version av Gottliebs modell för analys av undertexter. Syftet var att pröva hypotesen att de svenska undertextarna följer en översättningsstrategi som lämpar sig bättre för översättning av en informativ än för en expressiv text.     by John Cleese and Connie Booth • Five performances from 23-26 September 2015 at the Bridewell Theatre, Blackfriars • Auditions will be held Wednesday 17 June, 1 Churchill Place • Rehearsals every Tuesday and Thursday 6.30-8.30pm, 1 Churchill Place PRODUCTION This production will be comprised of three episodes from scripts of the original TV series; The Hotel Inspectors, The Germans and Communication Problems. We will be casting 19 actors made up of: Seven regular roles which occur in each episode, 3 male, 4 female Twelve actors (6 female, 6 male) who can play various different larger and smaller speaking roles in each episode AUDITIONS Auditions will be held on Wednesday 17 June at Barclays HQ, 1 Churchill Place, Canary Wharf, E14 and will be open to all paying members of the society. As a steer on what the casting committee will be looking for, character will be key. If you've never seen Fawlty Towers, feel free to view the episodes on Netflix, YouTube, etc to get an idea. If you have time, please read the script pieces before the audition to give yourself more of a chance than if you simply read the lines straight off the page. While the director will want to give you freedom to bring your own character to the roles, success in casting will be based on how you portray it. Not so worried about you learning the audition lines, though that can help you express yourself more easily.     The Complexities of Farce (With a Case Study on Fawlty Towers) Dario Dalla Costa BA(Hons), DipEd This Thesis is presented for the degree of Master of Arts of the University of Western Australia, School of Social and Cultural Studies, Discipline of English, Communication and Cultural Studies, 2004. Abstract This thesis will counter the argument that farce is a simplistic dramatic form low in the theatrical hierarchy and demonstrate that it is both complex and multifaceted. It will be shown to have a long history and to have influenced many different dramatic forms. The thesis is in two sections. The first will explore farce in general, and the second will use the sitcom Fawlty Towers as a case study in order to explore the televisual mode and its relevance to the contemporary context. The question “What is farce?” will be answered in detail, thus developing an unambiguous perception of the genre which will form a contextual basis for the rest of the thesis. Recurring themes will be used to link chapters together and certain issues raised in early chapters will be expanded upon in later ones. A key aspect to be taken into consideration is the importance the physical plays in farce. Thus, my focus will be specifically on performance texts, and not limit itself to the “literary” texts. The theatrical hierarchy will be addressed directly, exploring why and how the genre has been delegated to the lowest rung of the hierarchical ladder. Such a classification will be destabilised and shown to be unfounded because it is based on such assumptions as tragedy being the “best” genre because it is tragedy, and farce the worst because it is farce.

It is towards the end of dinner‐time. The room is very full and Basil, Polly and Manuel are bustling about frantically. Sybil, however, is standing by a central table, ignoring the confusion. She is talking to Mr Libson, who is sitting by himself at the table. He looks extremely bored. Sybil Oh, it's a lovely part of the world, isn't it? All those beautiful trees and fields and a variety of birds. Mr Libson Yes, that's true. Sybil And you can just go there and get away from it all, away from the helter‐skelter of modern life. Because we all do need our solitude, don't we. Mr Libson (feelingly) Yes, we do. Sybil I mean, nowadays it's not easy to find the time to. I don't know, enjoy life because there's always things to do, it's all so hectic, isn't it. All of us just running around letting things get on top of us, and quite honestly what's the point? Basil rushes by on his way to a table where Mr and Mrs Johnstone sit.
