Incidents Update: During the reporting period six natural disaster incidents were reported.

Central Region:

: On the 26th of February, as per report by ANDMA, heavy rainfall affected around ten families in Kabul city and another 15 families in , Tapa Dowom-Tapa Payen village. Three deaths and one injury were also reported in Dehmazang of Kabul City. On the 26th of February, the assessment team comprised of IOM, ANDMA, CARE, and District 3 Municipality, identified six families in need of assistance and confirmed the reported deaths and injury. The main needs of the affected families were household items, winter warm clothing, emergency shelter, and food items. Central Highland Region:

• Ghor-Lal Wa Sarejangal Province: As reported by Lal wa Sarejangal district’s governor on the 17th of February, two additional families were affected by harsh winter in Lal wa Sarjangal, Sar Qawala village of. Two deaths (six and ten days old infants), due to pneumonia and high vulnerability of the families in the cold weather, were confirmed by DoPH. An initial assessment, conducted by ACF-Ghor, ARCS, ANDMA, DoPH and the Office of the DG, recommended the families for NFIs, warm clothing, and food items. IOM provided warm clothing, blankets, and family revitalization kits to both families on the 25th of February.

South Region:

: On the 16th of February, as reported to OCHA via Zabul ANDMA, flood affected around 127 families in several villages of Zabul province, Arghandab district. Despite insecurity and challenging access to the district, an ad-hoc meeting was held on the 20th of February in Kandahar to coordinate an assessment. IOM together with ANDMA, WFP, HAPA and RRD representative conducted the assessment on the 21st of February. The findings of the assessment indicated that no houses were damaged following the incident. Only 13.5 jerib of agriculture land was affected in Hazara Khial, Tanur, Murghabi, Bagha and Sikitcha villages of Arghandab district, mainly due to the river bank erosion. vulnerability of the assessed families was attributed to the poverty. The needs for a retention wall and agriculture support have been referred to FAO.

Southeast Region:

· : As reported by ANDMA on the 21st of February, destructive weather patterns persisted in Gayan district, Badli Gayan village. The heavy rainfall and snowfall have affected two families (one house destroyed, one damaged) and claimed one death and two injuries. For the moment, the affected population living in this very remote, insecure and inaccessible area remains unassisted. In response, ANDMA is planning to call the families to Paktika center, the road conditions permitting.

· : On the 22nd of February, as reported by community elders, heavy snowfall destroyed the house of one family in Ali Khail (Jaji) district, Ali Khail Hulya village. ARCS volunteers informed IOM that the house was initially burned and the families moved to a temporary household while reconstructing their house.

East Region:

: On the 25th of February, as per initial reports from DoRR, heavy rainfall affected three families in , Nar Masi village. IOM together with DoRR conducted an assessment on the 26th of February and identified three families, whose residential rooms were destroyed, in need of assistance. The main needs of the families were NFIs, shelter and food items. In response IOM provided winter warm clothing, and family revitalization kits to all the families on the 27th of February, while NRC and WFP will provide tents and food items. · Nooristan Province: Responding to the previously reported heavy rainfall in Waygal district, in Rachigal, Kegal, and Want villages affecting 13 families, IOM provided four emergency shelter kits while IMC addressed their NFI needs.

Northeast Region:

· Teshkan District: On the 20th of February, ANDMA reported 300 displaced families from Bala Tashkan village of Tashkan district to Dew Astayan village of the same district due to a landslide occurred on the 5th of February. On the 21st of February, the assessment team comprised of IOM, AfghanAid, ARCS, ANDMA, and DDA assigned by the Provincial Governor, assessed the area and found that there were no displacements nor damages made to the houses. Thus, no assistance has been recommended. However, the villagers and the provincial governor are deeply concerned about Landslide in Bala Tashkan village, IOM, 21 February 2013 possible future landslides and expressed their desire to resettle to a safer area.

· Faizabad District: Provincial Governor reported a landslide caseload to the IOM field office on the 25th of February. According to the initial information, the incident affected 23 families on the 20th of February. The

[2] assessment team consisting of IOM, FOCUS and ANDMA visited the area on the 25th of February and found that ten households (23 families) were completely destroyed. In addition, the families lost their household items, cloths and food stock when the roof collapsed. For the time being, the affected families are living with their host families in the same village. In order to reduce their vulnerability, the assessment team recommended the provision of household items, winter warm clothing, emergency shelter and food items. Consequently, IOM will cover their winter clothing and emergency shelter needs, while their foods needs has been referred to WFP and the household items to ANDMA and OCHA.
