Annual Report 2011/2012 The Mission Statement for the Jackson Hole Chamber of Commerce “The Mission of the Jackson Hole Chamber of Commerce is to champion the interests of local businesses, enhance their prosperity, and strengthen the economic climate of Teton County.” A Letter from the Chair Jim Waldrop • Wort Hotel The mission of Jackson Hole Chamber of Commerce is to champion the interests of local business. In a community like Jackson Hole, the variety of programs and initiatives that we employ to accomplish this mission are as unique as the Members of our Chamber. In the last year, the Jackson Hole Chamber of Commerce has marked a number of milestones. A leading indicator of the strength of our programs, the Jackson Hole Chamber of Commerce earned Four Star Accreditation with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce placing the organization among the top 2% of Chambers in the United States. Membership is at an all-time high with over 40% market penetration, more than double the national average. As the home to America’s best idea, Yellowstone National Park, the Jackson Hole Chamber of Commerce has led the charge for Teton County to be recognized as a Global Sustainable Tourism Council Early Adopter, only one of six world-wide and the first Chamber to become certified sustainable. The Jackson Hole Chamber of Commerce has also been fortunate to work with the Jackson Hole Travel & Tourism Joint Powers Board to strengthen and invigorate our economy through successful events, progressive and proactive visitor services and dynamic domestic and international destination sales. Additionally, through strong community collaboration and outreach programs such as Great Until 8, Buy Local and others we are uniting a community around viable initiatives for the businesses of Jackson Hole. -

A genuine small town, it is the cen- tral business hub of Star Valley, which was settled by pioneers from the LDS (Mormon) church in 1879. The winter of 1879-1880 was brutal, but they endured the near starvation and frigid tem- peratures. In the center of town, the Afton Tabernacle still stands as a monument to their fortitude. The signature Elkhorn Arch nearby, which spans Main Street, is made of over 3,000 antlers. Afton celebrated its first 100 years in 2002. Though still a dominantly agricultural community, locals have embraced tourism, which has resulted from the overflow of visitors to the Jackson and the Wind River areas. Dairy farming made the valley famous for its cheese, especially hard-to-make Swiss. During the twenty-six year period of National Park Service control, the park has lacked a cohesive management strategy for stewardship of the Bar BC Dude Ranch’s natural and cultural resources. The purpose of this plan is to establish a management strategy that prioritizes preservation efforts of individual resources based on an analysis of condition, integrity, and significance. This plan was completed by Katherine Longfield, Cultural Resources Specialist for Grand Teton National Park, in partial fulfillment of a certificate in Historic Preservation from University of Pennsylvania’s School of Design. In the summer of 2011, students and faculty from the University of Pennsylvania’s historic preservation program completed a two-week conditions assessment of the ranch that was instrumental in completing this conservation and management plan. Grand Teton National Park is currently completing a Historic Properties Management Plan (HPMP) that proposes management strategies and priorities for park historic properties.
