HAVDALAH March 20, 2021

The Havdalah ceremony marks the end of Shabbat, the day of rest. With blessings and rituals involving the senses, highlighting wine, spices, and candlelight, we take leave of the restful Sabbath and welcome a new week. Join us in a ceremony that is special to both of us.

Wine First, we say a blessing over the wine, a symbol of joy, to sanctify the moment.

Baruch atah Adonai, Eloheinu Melech haolam, borei p'ri hagafen. We praise You, Eternal God, Sovereign of the universe, Creator of the fruit of the vine.

Spices Next, we smell the spices to carry the spiritual richness of Shabbat into the week ahead, reminding us that six days will pass and Shabbat will return.

Baruch atah Adonai, Eloheinu Melech haolam borei minei v'samim. We praise You, Eternal God, Sovereign of the universe, Creator of all spices.

The Candle We light the candle as the the the first fire of the new week. It is a sign that the time to begin creating again has arrived. The candle has at least two wicks; one represents the world that is, the other represents the world that can be - a world of light and warmth for all humanity.

Baruch atah Adonai, Eloheinu Melech haolam, borei m'orei ha-eish. We praise You, Eternal God, Sovereign of the universe, Creator of fire.

Hamavdil Finally, we thank God for bringing the holiness of Shabbat into the holiness of our friends and family.

Baruch atah Adonai, Eloheinu Melech haolam, hamavdil bein kodesh l'chol. We praise You, Eternal God, Sovereign of the universe, who separates sacred from the profane.

Songs At the conclusion of the Havdalah service, we extinguish the candle in wine, and sing:

Eliyahu hanavi, Eliyahu hatishbi, Eliyahu, Eliyahu, Eliyahu hagiladi.

Eliyahu, Eliyahu, hagiladi Bimheirah b'yameinu, yavo eileinu, im Mashiach ben David, im Mashiach ben David,

A good week, a week of peace, may gladness reign and joy increase.

Shavuah Tov!

IF I HAD A HAMMER

If I had a hammer, I’d hammer in the morning I’d hammer in the evening, all over this land I’d hammer out danger, I’d hammer out warning I’d hammer out the love between my brothers and my sisters all over this land

If I had a bell, I’d ring it in the morning I’d ring it in the evening, all over this land I’d ring out danger, I’d ring out warning I’d ring out the love between my brothers and my sisters all over this land

If I had a song, I’d sing it in the morning I’d sing it in the evening, all over this land. I’d sing out danger, I’d sing out warning I’d sing out the love between my brothers and my sisters all over this land

Well I’ve got a hammer, and I’ve got a bell And I’ve got a song to sing all over this land It’s the hammer of justice, it’s the bell of freedom It’s the song about the love between my brothers and my sisters all over this land

2

TIMES THEY ARE A-CHANGIN’

Come gather ‘round people wherever you roam And admit that the waters around you have grown And accept it that soon you’ll be drenched to the bone If your time to you is worth savin’ Then you’d better start swimmin’ or you’ll sink like a stone For the times, they are a-changin’.

Come writers and critics who prophesize with your pen And keep your eyes wide the chance won’t come again And don’t speak too soon for the wheel’s still in spin And there’s no tellin’ who that it’s namin’ For the loser now will be later to win For the times, they are a-changin’

Come senators and congressman please heed the call Don’t stand in the doorway, don’t block up the hall For he who gets hurt will be he who has stalled There’s a battle outside and it’s raging It’ll soon shake your windows and rattle your walls For the times, they are a-changin’

Come mothers and fathers throughout the land And don’t criticize what you can’t understand Your sons and your daughters are beyond your command Your old road is rapidly agin’ Please get out of the new one if you can’t lend a hand For the times, they are a-changin’

The line it is drawn, the curse it is cast The slow one now will later be fast As the present now will later be past, the order is rapidly fadin’ The first one now will later by last For the time they are a-changin’ 3

THE GREAT MANDELLA

So I told him, that he’d better Shut his mouth and do his job like a man And he answered, “listen, father I will never kill another” He thinks he’s better then his brother that died What the hell does he think he’s doing To his father who brought him up right.

CHORUS: Take your place on the great Mandella As it moves through your brief moment of time Win or lose now, you must choose now, And if you lose you’re only losing your life.

Tell the jailer not to bother With his meal of bread and water today. He is fasting till the killings over He’s a martyr, he thinks he’s a prophet But he’s a coward, he’s just playing a game. He can’t do it, he can’t change it It’s been going on for ten thousand years.

Tell the people they are safe now. Hunger stopped him, he lies still in his cell. Death has gagged his accusations. We are free now. We can kill now. We can hate now. Now we can end the world We’re not guilty, he was crazy And it’s been going on for ten thousand years. 4

UNIVERSAL SOLDIER

He’s five foot two and he’s six feet four He fights with missiles and with spears He’s all of thirty one and he’s only seventeen He’s been a soldier for a thousand years.

He’s a Catholic, a Hindu, an Atheist, a Jain A Buddhist and a Baptist and a Jew And he know he shouldn’t kill and he knows he always will Kill you for me my friend and me for you.

And he’s fighting for Canada, he’s fighting for France He’s fighting for the U.S.A. And he’s fighting for the Russians and he’s fighting for Japan And he thinks we’ll put an end to war this way.

And he’s fighting for democracy he’s fighting for the Reds He says it’s for the peace of all He’s the one who must decide, who’s to live and who’s to die And he never sees the writing on the wall.

But without him how would Hitler have condemned him at Lavall Without him Ceaser would have stood alone He’s the one who gives his body as a weapon of the war And without him all this killing can’t go on.

He’s the universal soldier and he really is to blame His orders come from far away no more They come from here and there and you and me And brothers can’t you see, This is not the way we put the end to war.

5

EVE OF DESTRUCTION

The Eastern world, it is exploding, violence flaring, bullets loading You’re old enough to kill, but not for voting You don’t believe in war, but what’s that gun your toting And even the Jordan River has bodies floating

CHORUS: But you tell me, over and over and over again my friend Ah you don’t believe we’re on the eve of destruction.

Don’t you understand what I’m tryin’ to say Don’t you feel the fears I’m feeling today If the button is pushed, there’s no runnin’ away They’ll be no one to save with the world in a grave Take a look around you boy It’s bound to scare you boy

Yeah my blood’s so mad, feels like coagulatin’ I’m sitting here just contemplating I can’t twist the truth, it knows no regulation A hand full of senators don’t pass legislation And marches alone can’t bring integration When human respect is disintegratin’ This whole crazy world is just too frustratin’

Think of all the hate there is in Red China Then take a look around to Selma, Alabama You may leave here for four days in space But when you return it’s the same old place The pounding of the drums, the pride and disgrace You can bury your dead but don’t leave a trace Hate your next door neighbor, but don’t forget to say grace.

6

BLOWING

How many roads must a man walk down Before you can call him a man? How many seas must the white dove fly Before she can sleep in the sand How many times must the cannonballs fly Before they’re forever banned.

Chorus The answer my friend is blowing in the wind The answer is blowing in the wind.

How many times must a man look up Before he can see the sky How many ears must one man have Before he can hear people cry How many deaths will it take till he knows That too many people have died.

How many years can a mountain exist Before it is washed to the sea How many years can some people exist Before they’re allowed to be free How many times can a man turn his head Pretending he just doesn’t see

7

OHIO

Tin soldiers and Nixon’s coming we’re finally on our own This summer I hear the drumming four dead in Ohio

Gotta get down to it soldiers are gunning us down Should’ve been done long ago What if you knew her and found her dead on the ground How can you run when you know?

La la la la lal la…….

Gotta get down to it soldiers are gunning us down Should’ve been done long ago What if you knew her and found her dead on the ground How can you run when you know?

Tin soldiers and Nixon’s coming we’re finally on our own This summer I hear the drumming four dead in Ohio

8

DONA DONA

On a wagon, bound for market There’s a calf with a mournful eye High above him, there’s a swallow Winging swiftly through the sky

Chorus: How the winds are laughing They laugh with all their might Laugh and laugh the whole day through And half the summers night, Dona (8)

Stop complaining, said the farmer Who told you a calf to be Why don’t you have wings to fly with Like the swallow so brave and free

Calves are easily bound and slaughtered Never knowing the reason why, But whoever treasures freedom Like the swallow has learned to fly

9

IMAGINE

Imagine there’s no heaven, it’s easy if you try No hell below us, above us only sky Imagine all the people living for today, Ah…

Imagine there’s no countries, it isn’t hard to do Nothing to kill or die for and no religion too. Imagine all the people, living life in peace

Chorus: You, you may say I’m a dreamer. But I’m not the only one I hope some day you’ll join us And the world will be as one.

Imagine no possessions, I wonder if you can No need for greed or hunger, A brotherhood of man Imagine all the people, sharing all the world

Chorus

10

MTA

Well, let me tell you of the story of a man named Charlie On a tragic and fateful day He put ten cents in his pocket, kissed his wife and family Went to ride on the MTA

CHORUS: Well, did he ever return? No he never returned and his fate is still unlearned He may ride forever 'neath the streets of Boston And he's the man who never returned

Charlie handed in his dime at the Kendall Square station And he changed for Jamaica Plain When he got there the conductor told him, "One more nickel" Charlie couldn't get off of that train!

Now, all night long Charlie rides through the stations Crying, "What will become of me? How can I afford to see my sister in Chelsea Or my cousin in Roxbury?"

Charlie's wife goes down to the Scollay Square station Every day at quarter past two And through the open window she hands Charlie a sandwich As the train comes rumbling through!

Now, you citizens of Boston, don't you think it's a scandal How the people have to pay and pay? Fight the fare increase, vote for George O'Brian! Get poor Charlie off the MTA!

11

LAST NIGHT I HAD THE STRANGEST DREAM

Last night I had the strangest dream, I ever dreamed before. I dreamed the world had all agreed To put an end to war.

I dreamed I saw a mighty room And the room was filled with men And the paper they were signing said They’d never fight again

And when the paper was all signed And a million copies made, They all joined hands and bowed their heads And grateful prayers were prayed.

And the people in the streets below Were dancing round and round While swords and guns and uniforms, Were scattered on the ground

Last night I had the strangest dream, I ever dreamed before. I dreamed the world had all agreed To put an end to war.

12

GET TOGETHER

Love is but a song we sing, fears the way we die You can make the mountains ring or hear the angels cry Though the bird is on the wing, and you may not know why.

Chorus: Come on people now smile on your brother Everybody get together Try to love one another right now

Some may come and some may go we will surely pass When the one that’s left us here returns for us at last We are but a moments sunlight fading in the grass.

Chorus

If you hear the song we sing, you will understand You hold the key to love and fear all in your trembling’ hand Just one key unlocks them both and they’re at your command.

Chorus 13

WEAVE ME THE SUNSHINE

Chorus: Weave, weave, weave me the sunshine out of the falling rain. Weave me the hope of a new tomorrow and fill my cup again

I’ve seen the steel and the concrete crumble Shine on me again The proud and the mighty all have stumbled Shine on me again

They say that the tree of loving, Shine on me again Grows on the bank of the river of suffering Shine on me again

If only I could heal your sorrow, Shine on me again I’d help you find your new tomorrow, Shine on me again

You know that you must climb that mountain Shine on me again. If you want to drink of that golden fountain, Shine on me again

14

NO MAN IS AN ISLAND

No man is an island No man stands alone Each man’s joy is joy to me Each man’s grief is my own

We need one another So I will defend Each man as my brother, Each man as my friend

I saw the people gather I heard the music start The song that they were singing Is ringing in my heart

We need one another So I will defend Each man as my brother, Each man as my friend

15

Free To Be … You and Me

There’s a land that I see, where the children are free And I say it ain’t far, to this land from where we are

Take my hand come with me, where the children are free Come with me … take my hand, and we’ll live

In a land where the river runs free In a land through the green country In a land to a shining sea And you and me are free to be, you and me

I see a land bright can clear, and the times comin’ near When we’ll live in this land, you and me, hand-in-hand

Take my hand … come along, lend your voice, to my song Come along – take my hand, sing a song…

For a land where the river runs free For a land through the green country For a land where the horses run free And you and me are free to be, you and me

Every boy in this land, grows to be his own man In this land every girl, grows to be her own women Take my hand – come with me where the children are free Come with me – take my hand and we’ll run…

To a land where the river runs free To a land through the green country To a land to a shining sea To a land where the horses run free To a land where the children are free And you and me are free to be, you and me. 16

LIGHT ONE CANDLE

Light one candle for the Maccabee children Give thanks that their light didn’t die Light one candle for the pain they endured When their right to exist was denied Light one candle for the terrible sacrifice Justice and freedom demand Light one candle for the wisdom to know When the peacemaker’s time is at hand

Chorus: Don’t let the light go out It’s lasted for so many years Don’t let the light go out Let it shine though our love and our tears

Light one candle for the strength that we need To never become our own foe Light one candle for those who are suffering The pain we learned so long ago Light one candle for all we believe in Let anger not tear us apart Light one candle to bind us together With peace as the song in our heart

What is the memory that’s valued so highly That we keep alive in that flame What’s the commitment to those who have died When we cry out “they’ve not died in vain” We have come this far always believing That justice will somehow prevail This is the burden and this is the promise And this is why we will not fail. 17

THE DREAMER

CHORUS: For our hands are strong and our hearts are young And the dreamer keeps a dreamin’ ages long.

What’d we do when we needed corn? We ploughed and we sowed tell the early morn. (2)

What’d we do when we needed a town? We hammered and we nailed till the sun went down (2)

What’ll we do when it’s peace we want? When it’s more than a man can build or plant. We’ll gather all our friends from the ends of the earth To lend a hand in it’s hour of birth.

We’ll plough, we’ll sow We’ll hammer and we’ll nail We’ll work all day till peace is real.

18

EIL NA R’FA NA LA

Eil na r’fa na la, eil na r’fa na la

And Moses cried, “Heal Miriam, Heal Miriam, this I pray.”

MIRIAM’S SONG

And the women dancing with their timbrels Followed Miriam as she sang her song Sing a song to the One whom we’ve exalted Miriam and the women danced And danced the whole night long.

And Miriam was a weaver of unique variety The tapestry she wove was one which sang our history With every strand and every thread she crafted her delight A women touched with spirit she dances towards the light

When Miriam stood upon the shores and gazed across the sea The wonder of this miracle she soon came to believe Who ever thought the sea would part with an outstretched hand And we would pass to freedom and march to the promised land

And Miriam the prophet took her timbrel in her hand And all the women followed her just as she had planned And Miriam raised her voice in song, she sang with praise and might We’ve just lived through a miracle, we’re going to dance tonight 19

You ask me why I am sighing my son You shall inherit what mankind has done In a world filled with sorrow and woe. If you ask me why this is so, I really don’t know.

Chorus

Tell me why you are smiling my son Is there a secret you can’t tell everyone Do you know more then men that are wise? Can you see what we all must disguise Through your loving eyes?

May we be blessed as we go on our way. May we be guided in peace. May we be blessed with health and joy. May this be our blessing, amen.

Amen, Amen. May this be our blessing, Amen. (2)

May we be sheltered by the wings of peace. May we be kept in safety and in love. May grace and compassion find their way to every soul. May this be our blessing, amen.
