  • Voices in the Hall: Sam Bush (Part 1) Episode Transcript
VOICES IN THE HALL: SAM BUSH (PART 1) EPISODE TRANSCRIPT PETER COOPER Welcome to Voices in the Hall, presented by the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum. I’m Peter Cooper. Today’s guest is a pioneer of New-grass music, Sam Bush. SAM BUSH When I first started playing, my dad had these fiddle albums. And I loved to listen to them. And then realized that one of the things I liked about them was the sound of the fiddle and the mandolin playing in unison together. And that’s when it occurred to me that I was trying on the mandolin to note it like a fiddle player notes. Then I discovered Bluegrass and the great players like Bill Monroe of course. You can specifically trace Bluegrass music to the origins. That it was started by Bill Monroe after he and his brother had a duet of mandolin and guitar for so many years, the Monroe Brothers. And then when he started his band, we're just fortunate that he was from the state of Kentucky, the Bluegrass State. And that's why they called them The Bluegrass Boys. And lo and behold we got Bluegrass music out of it. PETER COOPER It’s Voices in the Hall, with Sam Bush. “Callin’ Baton Rouge” – New Grass Revival (Best Of / Capitol) PETER COOPER “Callin’ Baton Rouge," by the New Grass Revival. That song was a prime influence on Garth Brooks, who later recorded it. Now, New Grass Revival’s founding member, Sam Bush, is a mandolin revolutionary whose virtuosity and broad- minded approach to music has changed a bunch of things for the better.

CONDICIÓN (if … won´t) Moonshadow Moonshadow aatt SStteevveennss YYuussuuff IIssllaamm Cat Stevens was one of the 1970's most popular musical artists. With a string of hit records and sold-out concerts he rocketed to superstardom. His album `Tea For The Tillerman´ is considered to be one of the best of its genre and his name is still a household word. So what happened to him? Why did he leave pop stardom behind? What is he doing now? Cat Stevens was born Stephen Demetre Georgiou on lyJu 21st, 1948 to a Greek Cypriot father and Swedish mother. In the late 60's he had a string of hit records in the UK and he later repeated his success throughout the world with a number of top selling albums including "Tea For The Tillerman" and "Teaser And The Firecat." In 1977 Cat Stevens embraced Islam and became a Muslim. Two years later he changed his name to Yusuf Islam and left the music business as Cat Stevens forever. Why did he become a Muslim? In the late 70's Cat was introduced to Islam by hisbrother David Gordon, who gave him a copy of the Qur'an -the holy book of the Muslims. Cat was immediately impressed by the religion and ultimately adopted it. He later changed his name to Yusuf Islam. He stopped making music because he felt that the life of a pop star was incompatible with the life of a Muslim.

  • Homeless Brother by Don Mclean, Released in 1974 on the Album Homeless Brother
Homeless Brother by Don McLean, released in 1974 on the album Homeless Brother I was walking by the graveyard, late last Friday night, I heard somebody yelling, it sounded like a fight. It was just a drunken hobo dancing circles in the night, Pouring whiskey on the headstones in the blue moonlight. So often have I wondered where these homeless brothers go, Down in some hidden valley were their sorrows cannot show, Where the police cannot find them, where the wanted man can go. There's freedom when your walkin', even though you're walkin' slow. Smash your bottle on a gravestone and live while you can, That homeless brother is my friend. It's hard to be a pack rat, it's hard to be a 'bo, But livin's so much harder where the heartless people go. Somewhere the dogs are barking and the children seem to know That Jesus on the highway was a lost hobo. And they hear the holy silence of the temples in the hill, And they see the ragged tatters as another kind of thrill.
