Premise Skeptical Forensic Psychologist (Herbers) allies with a Catholic seminarian (Coulter) and a technology contractor (Mandvi) to investigate alleged supernatural incidents. Kristen is not religious and does not believe in demons or the supernatural, but finds her skepticism tested many times as she walks a fine line between what science can explain and what she has yet to explain. Their fears that Caroline were being tortured and deprived of medical care contradicted the priests' fears that she would succumb to evil if exorcism was not properly ended, and both sides were arguing about what to do. David eventually treats Caroline, persuading her to give up demonic influence, feeding on her soul, instantly returning her to sanity. A group of appraisers comes from the Vatican to interrogate the team about Grace and give them access to the original code, part of which Kristen illegally takes pictures. During her exorcism, the housewife confesses to several murders. As it is unclear if she is really responsible, Kristen and David are brought in to examine her. David reminds Kristen that because the woman is technically her patient, she is prohibited by privacy rules from reporting her to the police unless they force her to force her to make her earn what she intends to kill again. Kristen uses the patient's own emotional instability to weaken the demon's influence, allowing her to determine that she is not a killer, but a cover for the real. When her husband arrests her, David visits him in secret, strangles him and finds evidence that he is the killer. Kristen and Ben discover that the melody comes from an online cartoon about marijuana, and that all the affected students have heard it through a video posted by a popular influenced man, Melindaz. Lexi asks Cheryl for advice on fighting bully; Cheryl tells her to hit the girl with a rock and then lie about it when Kristen finds out. Unbeknownst to everyone, Townsend secretly instructs Cheryl to undermine her daughter. Someone sends David compromising photos that expose his relationship with Renee, and so he decides to talk to her. After the melody infects Lila, Ben determines that she has been altered to pass on a secret message to anyone under the age of 16, forcing them to commit suicide. The team faces Melindaz, who goes to Townsend, her producer, for help. He tells her to apologize and take down the video, knowing it will only encourage teens to continue sharing it. Ben creates his own avatar, posing as Laila Bouchard, and contacts Rose390, while Judy uses tracking equipment to track Down's location and send it to the cops. David manages to contact Kristen, who learns about Bloch's guilt with clever deception and brings Dr. Boggs to release David. Sonia locks him up and prepares to kill Lando, despite both men's pleas for mercy. After the boy's twin sister mysteriously In the womb, David arranges an exorcism, but Eleanor's baby is born before it can be completed. He and Ben Ben at RSM Fertility, a clinic run by Eleanor's IVF, and discover connections with the families they previously worked with. David offers a theory: the clinic is secretly the front for a hierarchy that spiritually corrupt the eggs of expectant mothers to create a generation of people who will be more susceptible to temptation and sin. Kristen says her daughter Lexis was born after she was treated by RSM Fertility. David has a different vision, this time Kristen goes to the demon. Kristen gets a call that Leroux was found beaten to death in his home. She then burns her hand, raising the crucifix, suggesting that the evil is inside her. Production CBS commissioned the pilot for a potential series in January 2019, created by the writing team of Robert and Michelle King. Katya Herbers and Mike Coulter were cast in February, while Michael Emerson and Aasif Mundwey were dumped in March. The order for the series was officially made in May 2019. The day after that, it was announced that the series would premiere in the fall of 2019, and the premiere will take place on Thursday night at 10 p.m. during the 2019-2020 television season. The series debuted on September 26, 2019. On July 18, 2019, Christine Lahti was cast as Cheryl Luria, replacing Deirdre O'Connell, who was in the original pilot.
