    Aasif Mandvi, Actor, Writer, Correspondent for The Daily Show Aasif Mandvi is widely known for his work as a correspondent on Comedy Central’s The Daily Show with John Stewart. Butterworth, Advisor Gary Heba Graduate Faculty Representative Joshua Atkinson Clayton Rosati ii ABSTRACT Michael L. Butterworth, Advisor Scholars have long considered myth to be the driving force of rhetorical constitution. While myth has and remains a key logic that aids rhetoric in the formation of audiences, Roland Barthes argues that myth is a tool best served to produce right-leaning political discourse. As such, the shared logic of myth has encouraged the constitution of audiences that are positioned to act in ways that lead to predetermined judgments of politics and society that reinforce current power structures. Yet, Barthes argues that, despite myth’s dominance in discourse, another logic must exist that is better suited for left-leaning political purposes. Looking at the related paratexts from Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert, and the entire Stewart/Colbert universe, I argue this universe utilizes such an alternative logic to produce left- leaning constitutive rhetoric. This logic of ironic appropriation serves to hail an audience into being, position that audience toward action, and uses that action to make judgments about the world in which the audience lives. Using the three principles of ironic appropriation—irony, intertextuality, and interactivity—the Stewart/Colbert universe produces texts that encourage individuals to come together into an audience that questions the normalization of incommensurability in discourse and, instead, seeks to find ways to build bridges and increase political activity.

    Theory and Practice in English Studies Volume 9, No. 1–2, 2020 E-ISSN: 1805-0859 “THERE'S A DEMON IN THE INTERNET”: HAUNTED MEDIA, GLOBALIZATION AND TELEVISUAL HORROR Klára Feikusová Abstract This paper is focused on the portrayal of media, more precisely television and new media, in television horror shows in the context of globalization and the implica- tions of this portrayal. The media and their technologies have always been de- monized in one way or another. Every new invention, every new means of com- munication is viewed with a mix of awe and suspicion. New technology and new media become objects of phobia. Once a new medium is introduced, it usually takes the position of a phobic object, relieving the old one from this burden. How- ever, a certain level of anxiety remains with the old medium. No genre shows this quite as well as horror. In the horror genre, the media and their physical forms are often shown either as a threat itself or bringer of thereof. The internet and social media are just as monstrous. But how are these monsters, material or not, por- trayed in the media itself? In this paper I will analyze how television horror shows mediate the anxiety about threats linked to new media, social media, and television itself. In the first half of the paper, I focus on haunted media as a travelling concept in the television landscape. In the second half, I use the TV show Evil (2019-) as a case study, ana- lyzing how it portrays new media as an ultimate threat in the era of globalization.

AASIF MANDVI: I show up at gallery openings or events to meet friends and realize, ​ “This is too noisy for me, I can’t actually go in.” How did I suddenly become this middle-aged guy who can’t hang with people? The ringing is all-consuming all of the time. Until, eventually … it’s not. After some time it slowly begins to recede into the background. My brain adjusts to its presence. It’s a part of me. My brain starts to go, “Oh, okay, this thing that I was afraid of, maybe I’m not as afraid of anymore.” I still hope to find some way to heal myself of my chronic condition. But as my brain begins to cope with the ringing, I begin to become aware of an underlying truth about my life: I am more vulnerable than I think I am. I am less in control than I think I am. I’m more lonely than I like to pretend. GUNATILLAKE: Born in India and raised in England, actor, comedian, Aasif Mandvi has given ​ us so many laughs in his role as a correspondent on The Daily Show. Many of you will also ​ ​ know him from his lead role on the television series Evil.
