Women Take the Lead: Female Directors Last month, we celebrated International Women’s Day; a day to celebrate the achievements of half the planet and point out the gender imbalances in many occupations. Never is the discrepancy more striking than in the director’s chair where women make up a measly 7% of all directors. Only one woman has won a Best Directing Oscar and only four have been nominated. But these sad statistics don’t reflect that women are creating some of the most exciting and innovative films around. Here’s a short list to get you started: Kathryn Bigelow - The only female director to win an Oscar, she has been steadfast in making the films she wants; serious movies for adults. Check out: Food for Fines The Hurt Locker (2008) – An incredibly intense film about soldiers assigned to a bomb To celebrate this week, all of the disposal unit in Baghdad. -

Ben Toth, Vocal Coach to the Stars
Vocal coach Ben Toth is also a player The performer-composer helps prepare Beau Bridges for his Broadway singing debut while his own career flourishes. December 26, 2011 | By Diane Haithman, Special to the Los Angeles Times As the old joke goes: "How do you get to Carnegie Hall?" "Practice, practice." That punch line would have to be rewritten for vocal coach, performer and composer Ben Toth. Toth, 34, got to Carnegie Hall — and the Hollywood Bowl and Broadway — by helping other people practice, practice and practice some more. During a late November interview at a Los Feliz cafe, Toth — whose clients include Lea Michele, Taye Diggs, Josh Radnor, Wayne Brady, Christina Hendricks and Mandy Patinkin — was on a high from serving as musical director, arranger and backup singer for "Cheyenne Jackson's Cocktail Hour: Music From the 'Mad Men' Era" at Carnegie Hall" on Nov. 18. But there wasn't much time to relax and enjoy: Toth was also coaching Beau Bridges for his Broadway singing debut in "How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying." Bridges is stepping in for John Larroquette as corporate tycoon J.B. Biggley in January, and Toth had been working with him for about six weeks, including bicoastal Skype sessions when Toth's career took him to New York. Bridges, whose latest film, "The Descendants," is getting Oscar buzz, joins the cast Jan. 3, at the same time that Darren Criss replaces Daniel Radcliffe. Toth met the actor in 2009 on a production of "Guys and Dolls" at the Hollywood Bowl. Bridges' success in "Guys and Dolls" led to his being cast in "How to Succeed in Business." Bridges, 70, has acted on Broadway before ("Where's Daddy?," "Who's Who in Hell"), but this will be his first time singing on the Great White Way, and he wasn't going to do it without Toth. -

Greene Foundation Leadership support for theater at BAM provided by The SHS Foundation and The Shubert Foundation, Inc. v Directors’ Note Photo: Heidrun Lohr The Second Woman takes as its starting point the idea that emotions and identities are culturally and historically specific, and that gender identities are defined by, and produced through, emotional cul- tures and norms. Taking gender, as a particular relation to cultural power and privilege, as its focus, The Second Woman explores the ways in which gender privilege and power expresses itself through feeling. The Second Woman began as a small self-funded project. It was a high-risk endeavor as, although we could test the work with multiple participants, we couldn’t test the durational aspect of the show. There is no way to rehearse a 24-hour production that relies on audience and participants. With so many variables and unknowns, we went into our second performance with an equal amount of dread. -

1 Cultural Daily Independent Voices, New Perspectives Relevant Soldier’s Play; Dated Bob and Carol David Sheward · Wednesday, February 5th, 2020 The twisted legacy of racism and shifting attitudes on sexuality are the diverse topics of two current New York stage offerings—a revival of A Soldier’s Play presented on Broadway by the Roundabout Theatre Company and a musical version of Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice produced by The New Group at the Pershing Square Signature Center Off-Broadway. Both present material from previous eras with stark perspectives on how relevant they may still be. While one is still shockingly immediate, the other seems quaint and laughable. What’s not too surprising is that race remains a hot- button issue while unabashed examinations of carnality have passed into the passe. Blair Underwood in A Soldier’s Play. Credit: Joan Marcus Charles Fuller’s A Soldier’s Play won the Pulitzer Prize in 1982 and searingly focuses on the corrosive effect of bigotry in the military and American society at large. After a hit Off-Broadway run presented by the Negro Ensemble Company, the suspense Cultural Daily - 1 / 5 - 03.08.2021 2 drama was adapted into a film called A Soldier’s Story, and then revived Off-Broadway in 2005. Fuller skillfully wraps his unflinching observations on racial animus and its poisonous influence into a taut murder mystery. In a 1944 training camp in the deep south, African-American officer Richard Davenport has been assigned to investigate the unsolved killing of career Army black sergeant Vernon Waters. At first, it appears white supremacists are the culprits since lynchings of African-American servicemen were not uncommon, but as Davenport delves deeper into the details of the case, he discovers a complex web of hate and resentment among the black soldiers fueled by institutional discrimination. -
