Doty, Jr. Genealogy Research Files and Book Collection M Biographical Information Irving Wakeman Doty, Jr. (1921-2000) was born in Buffalo, New York and moved to Savannah, Georgia at the age of 6 months with his parents. He married Ollireid New (b. 1922) of Savannah and they had two daughters, Pat Doty Daniel of Columbus, Georgia and Janet Doty Beall of West Point, Georgia. Other family members of Irving Wakeman Doty include Robert N. Doty, Sr. of Savannah, Jean Doty Strickland (1922-2003) of Brevard, North Carolina, Dorothea Doty Prysock (1926-2001) of Columbus, Georgia, Eleanor Doty Rowell (1928-2013) of Rincon, Georgia, and Margaret Doty Martin of Dowling Park, Florida. Irving Wakeman Doty, Jr. was an Army veteran of World War II serving in France in the European Theater. He was a member of the Pilgrim Edward Doty Society, the Georgia Historical Society, and the South Carolina Historical Society until his death in Savannah, Georgia. The Doty family lineage begins with Edward Doty (1599-1655) of London, England, a settler of the New England colony and granted land by a patent of the Virginia Company. Edward Doty sailed aboard the Mayflower as a servant of Stephen Hopkins. At the end of the voyage, Edward Doty, along with all male members of the Company signed the Mayflower Compact on November 11, 1620, thereby becoming "freemen." Edward Doty married Faith Clarke in 1634 or 1635. The colony record lists their nine children as Edward, John, Thomas, Samuel, Desire, Elizabeth, Isaac, Joseph, and Mary. As an early settler of the colony, in 1633 Edward Doty was granted a land tract of one acre located on Watson's Hill. This one acre tract of land was passed to his son, Edward Doty, upon his death on August 23, 1655. Other shares deeded to the remaining children were bought by his son-in-law, Justice James Warren, from whom title has passed to its present owners. Descendants of the Edward Doty line span several generations. In an effort to perpetuate the memory of Edward Doty, The Pilgrim Edward Doty Society was founded in 1982 with members throughout the world. Edward Doty's legacy is manifested in the Edward Doty Memorial, the Doty coat-of-arms, and the Edward Doty House site at Court and Price Street in Plymouth, Massachusetts.
