In June 2015, Jepsen released her third studio album, Emotion, which did not have much commercial success. Despite this, the album developed a strong and Jepsen grew to become a "critical darling". Emotion was included on several year-end lists from publications such as NPR, NME, Complex, and The Village Voice, and the album's promotional cycle was rounded out with a well-received performance at the 2016 Music Festival. [. ] The metamorphosis of the tracklists I've made for Emotion have probably changed six times. I have a little easel board with it painted on and I'd come home from a session and then I'd write down a song I liked better than having to decide which song to take out. I had to rebuild it and give it a facelift almost every week. I think there is a natural rebellion when you have success in one area to completely rebel against that. I needed to get that out of my system, I think. I made really weird music. But I didn’t want to release that album. It felt not like the move I felt like making. At first, when I was in LA [working on the new album], I was making very pure pure pop again, kind of almost Kiss. I wasn’t feeling that. The indie album was too hot, too cold. Emotion felt like the right balance.” "[Emotion] had to not be about trying to prove something. I feel like if you're writing music just to have a different identity in the public's eye, it's sort of the wrong motive. It's gotta be coming from a place of what you love and what you're passionate about." Development. Due to her dissatisfaction with Kiss 's constrained timeframe of two months, Jepsen went into Emotion with the intent of crafting a project that was authentic and allowed her to approach different avenues. An epiphany came to Jepsen after finishing " Emotion ", the album's title track, where she found that a 1980s pop sound, combined with a more "alternative" production, was what she had been seeking. This fashioned the album's direction entirely– Emotion developed as a midway point between the "pure" pop she recorded in Los Angeles and the indie-folk effort that was scrapped in New York. Emotion was spurred by her desire to take more creative control. Jepsen commented that much of the album is about "trying to get some power back" after exiting a relationship and subsequently settling down in New York. She sought to channel a "heart-on-your-sleeve sensibility" reminiscent of 1980s after attending a concert in Japan. These themes were further explored through "old-school" and records on morning runs before Cinderella rehearsals: "What I loved was how potent some of those [1980s] lyrics were—how heart wrenching, how everyone's tea leaves are just right there on their sleeve. In music today, everything is a little more coy, but I wanted that romance and that fantasy, and I think that a lot of people [my] age do." "['80s music] was kind of an escape from reality. There's a bit of fantasy on the album in that we've heightened everything–heightened the love and heightened the drama. [. ] I would tell the people I worked with, 'I want that feeling, that yearning, that uhhhhh.' And they were like, 'OK, you grunted. I think we get it.'" According to Carly there were more than 200 songs written for the album. "It was in the whittling-down process that we got to the 17 that you hear. One of the goals was to get to something that felt really cohesive and that helped me narrow it down. I wanted to have an '80s pop flavor to everything." According to her interview with Radio.com, to help her figure out which ones to keep, Carly hosted listening parties at her New York loft. “I seduced them with food and wine and would be like, ‘Here’s a ballot, we’re going to listen to some stuff, you cannot put your name down and just tell me what you love and what you hate, feel free to be candid" Prior to starting full-fledged work on Emotion , Jepsen had sketched several of its demos on her tour bus as she supported Kiss back in 2013.
