Since 2008, Acclaimed Music has been compiling a list of their All Time Top 3,000 Albums based on the ranking of various greatest albums lists. Due to this, it is more likely than not that an album will get the ranking that you may feel it deserves on this list. As the list examines rankings from other "greatest albums" lists across a large temporal spectrum, there's also an inevitable bias towards older, pre-21st century albums. That said, a number of records released since January 1, 2001 are still included, some as recent as 2019. Because of the dynamic nature of its subject, the list is constantly updating, with new revisions coming out periodically as time goes on and albums go up, down, in, and out of the rankings. The list was last updated on November 29th, 2020, and is due for another update at an unspecified point in 2021; the upcoming revision will incorporate albums from 2020. I'm down with "The House That Heaven Built" as year-end number 1. It's this year's "Queen of Hearts" (my #2 of 2011)--an ambitious, wide- open, perfectly executed rock anthem. When those tracks come along, they should be rewarded. I'm surprised all the Tame Impala acclaim has gone to "Elephant" so far. I thought "Feels Like We Only Go Backwards" was the consensus favorite from Lonerism, or at least the tracks would have similar acclaim. On the mainstream pop songs front, I'm totally down with a high ranking for "Call Me Maybe", but that T Swift song has no business being in the top 20. But I have a feeling this entire list will change quite a bit, as very few publications have revealed their songs lists yet.

It explores how the artists design alternate projections of world/subject relations through the development of artistic personas with speculative background narratives and the fictional emplacement of their music within alternate cultural imaginaries. It seeks to establish that both Erykah Badu and Janelle Monáe use the concept album as a platform to constitute their Afrofuturist artistic personas as fluid black female agents who are continuously in the process of becoming, evolving, and changing. They reinscribe instances of othering and exclusion by associating these with science fiction tropes of extraterrestrial, alien lives to express topical sociocultural criticism and promote social change in the context of contemporary U.S. American politics and black diasporic experience. Olga Panteleeva Abstract According to E. Ann Kaplan, Andrew Goodwin and Carol Vernallis, music videos usually do not have a narrative, at least not one like in classical Hollywood films. David Bordwell and Kristin Thompson state that such a narrative consists of events that are related by cause and effect and take place in a particular time and place. However, articles about music videos have not adequately addressed a new trend, namely the so called “visual album”. This medium is a combination of film and music video elements. Examples are Beyoncé’s much discussed visual album Lemonade from 2016 and Janelle Monáe’s “emotion picture” Dirty Computer from 2018. These visual albums are called ‘narrative films’ by sites such as The Guardian, Billboard and Vimeo, which raises questions about how narrative works in these media forms, because they include music videos which are usually non-narrative. It also poses the question how music functions with the narrative, as in most Hollywood films the music shifts to the background. By looking at the classical Hollywood narrative strategy and a more common strategy used in music videos, called a thread or motif strategy by Vernallis, I have analysed the two visual albums. After comparing them, it seems that both Lemonade and Dirty Computer make use of the motif strategy, but fail in achieving a fully wrought film narrative. Therefore, a different description to visual albums than ‘narrative film’, could be considered.

    WRCU 2/10 ROTATIONS RIYL = Recommended If You Like Alone, Omen 3 by King Krule RIYL: Cosmo Pyke, Ariel Pink The chameleonic singer-songwriter is gearing up for the February 21st release of his next album, Man Alive!, with single "Alone, Omen 3", which displays elements of both the stark, rough-shod post-punk of his first record, 6 Feet Beneath the Moon, and the more eclectic art pop leanings of his second, The OOZ. But "Alone, Omen 3" also hints at a new, psychedelically inclined direction for Marshall, featuring a more understated vocal performance and a woozy, meditative tone. On “Run,” a haunting, mysterious electric guitar snakes its way through the song supported by heartbreaking lyrics. Imagine you’re driving along a coastal highway, top-down, feeling the wind, letting the song’s words wash over you, and thinking of your last great love...all while wearing a bad-ass, black leather jacket. Abstract Using Antoine Hennion’s “anti-musicology”, this research project proposes a methodology for studying music production that empowers production choices as the primary analytical tool. It employs this methodology to analyze Kesha’s Rainbow, Janelle Monáe’s Dirty Computer, and St. Vincent’s Masseduction according to four, encompassing groups of production elements: musical elements, lyrical elements, personal elements, and narrative elements. All three albums were critical and commercial successes, and analyzing their respective choices offers valuable insight into the practice of successful producers that could not necessarily be captured by methodologies traditionally used for studying production, such as the interview.

With movements such as #MeToo and #TimesUp, artists are challenging the the construction of femininity and feminism. Some artists are using their artistic expressions to challenge the sexualization of women in music videos and are giving voice to the rage they experience in a misogynist culture that endorses a misogynist president. The shift in societal norms, taking into account the politically charged atmosphere, has created a new wave of feminism through popular music and popular culture.
