Box 1346 Ann Arbor, Ml 48106- 1346 ^ u 'v ABSTRACT This thesis is an examination of the work of Robert Garioch (1909-1981), and of his importance within the Scottish poetic tradition. It examines the way in which his reputation has suffered from too easy comparisons with Robert Fergusson, and seeks to reposition Garioch as a writer of greater breadth and depth than has often been acknowledged. The thesis takes in the gamut of Garioch’s writing and treats it as a whole. Chapter 1 examines Garioch’s kinship with Robert Fergusson and suggests that the connection between the two poets, while important, has often been over-emphasised, and suggests other equally important influences and precursors, while acknowledging Garioch’s originality. Chapter n deals with Garioch’s writing about Edinburgh in poetry, prose and drama. Chapter m is concerned with the longer poems and their importance, while Chapter iv deals with the translations, especially those from George Buchanan and Guiseppe Belli, and underlines their significance. Chapter v looks at Garioch’s relationship with other twentieth century writers in Scots—both with his contemporaries within and outwith the Lallans movement and with his predecessors. By way of examining the whole of Garioch’s work, including a significant number of his personal papers, and by contextualising it all, the thesis hopes to offer a more nuanced reading of Garioch’s poetry, one which recognises his frequently undervalued poetic achievement. Iain MacDonald – Linden J Bicket – Emma Dymock 9.30 – 11am Iain MacDonald The Very Heart of Beyond: Gaelic Nationalism and the Work of Fionn Mac Colla. The work of Fionn Mac Colla (Thomas Douglas Macdonald) examines the development of religious ideas and politics on Scottish society. He was primarily concerned with the representation of Scottish Gaelic and the cultural implications for Scotland with the erosion and re-establishment of Gaelic culture and identity in the industrialising modern era. These themes are most comprehensively explored in his best-known works, The Albannach (1932) and And The Cock Crew (1945) J.L. Broom's claim that MacColla's obsession with Calvinism's influence over Scotland had 'reached such proportions as to have distorted his artistic priorities' has influenced attitudes and encouraged lazy critical reception of the writer. It is my contention that MacColla's contribution to the developing 'Scottish Literary Renaissance' of the 1920s and 30s can be described as major, even if, at times, deserved critical reception has been thwarted. Mac Colla's work is primarily concerned with Scottish Gaelic culture, and its history. Although his fictional work concentrates on Gaelic communities in the central Highlands, Mac Colla spent 20 years living and teaching in the Hebrides. In this paper I will demonstrate that Mac Colla's work and themes are interwoven with his own experiences of the Gaelic community. I will also examine the title of this panel with reference to Fionn Mac Colla.

Four additional letters written by MacDiarmid’s second wife, Valda Grieve, to Sorley MacLean have also been included as they shed further light on the relationship which evolved between the two poets over the course of almost fifty years of friendship. These letters from Valda were archived with the unpublished correspondence from MacDiarmid which the Gaelic poet preserved. The critical introduction to the letters examines the significance of these poets’ literary collaboration in relation to the Scottish Renaissance and the Gaelic Literary Revival in Scotland, both movements following Ezra Pound’s Modernist maxim, “Make it new.” The first chapter, “Forging a Friendship”, situates the development of the men’s relationship in iii terms of each writer’s literary career, MacDiarmid already having achieved fame through his early lyrics and with the 1926 publication of A Drunk Man Looks at the Thistle when they first met.

    National 5 Critical Reading Exam Scottish Text: Jackie Kay Jackie Kay: National 5: Scottish text Jackie Kay Biography Jackie Kay was born in Edinburgh in 1961 to a Scottish mother and a Nigerian father. She was adopted as a baby by a white Scottish couple, Helen and John Kay, and grew up in Bishopbriggs, a suburb of Glasgow, in a 1950s-built Glasgow housing estate in a small Wimpey house, which her adoptive parents had bought new in 1957. They adopted Kay in 1961 having already adopted Jackie's brother, Maxwell, about two years earlier. Jackie and Maxwell also have siblings who were brought up by their biological parents. Her adoptive father worked for the Communist Party full-time and stood for Member of Parliament, and her adoptive mother was the Scottish secretary of Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament. In August 2007, Jackie Kay was the subject of the fourth episode of The House I Grew Up In, in which she talked about her childhood. Initially harbouring ambitions to be an actress, she decided to concentrate on writing after Alasdair Gray, a Scottish artist and writer, read her poetry and told her that writing was what she should be doing. She studied English at the University of Stirling and her first book of poetry, the partially autobiographical The Adoption Papers, was published in 1991 and won the Saltire Society Scottish First Book Award. Her other awards include the 1994 Somerset Maugham Award for Other Lovers, and the Guardian First Book Award Fiction Prize for Trumpet, based on the life of American jazz musician Billy Tipton, born Dorothy Tipton, who lived as a man for the last fifty years of his life.[citation needed] She writes extensively for stage (in 1988 her play Twice Over was the first by a Black writer to be produced by Gay Sweatshop Theatre Group), screen and for children.

Born in Motherwell, Lanarkshire, in 1947, she went to Glasgow School of Art where she started writing. After some eight years teaching art in Glasgow and Bristol, she travelled to Canada (1978) with a Scottish Writers Exchange Fellowship and became a professional writer. Memo for Spring (1971), her first collection of poems, won a Scottish Arts Council Book Award and inaugurated both a prolific career and the path many other Scottish women writers would follow afterwards. As a participant in several workshops—Stephen Mulrine’s, Philip Hobsbaum’s and Tom McGrath’s—where other contemporary writers like Alasdair Gray, Tom Leonard or James Kelman also collaborated, Lochhead began to create a prestigious space of her own within a markedly masculine canon. Her works have been associated with the birth of a female voice in Scottish literature and both her texts and performances have had general success in Britain and abroad. Her plays include Blood and Ice (1982), Mary Queen of Scots Got Her Head Chopped Off (1989), Perfect Days (1998), and adaptations like Molière’s Tartuffe (1985) and Miseryguts (The Misanthrope) (2002), Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1989), Euripides’ Medea (2000), which won the 2001 Saltire Scottish Book of the Year Award, Chekhov’s Three Sisters (2000) and Euripides and Sophocles’ lives of Oedipus, Jokasta and Antigone in Thebans (2003).
