Lean In modern technological societies we take the existence of numbers and the act of counting for granted: they occur in most everyday activities. They are regarded as being sufficiently important to warrant their occupying a substantial part of the primary school curriculum. Most of us, however, would find it difficult to answer with any authority several basic questions about number and counting. For example, how and when did numbers arise in human cultures: are they relatively recent inventions or are they an ancient feature of language? Is counting an important part of all cultures or only of some? Do all cultures count in essentially the same ways? In English, for example, we use what is known as a base 10 counting system and this is true of other European languages. Indeed our view of counting and number tends to be very much a Eurocentric one and yet the large majority the languages spoken in the world - about 4500 - are not European in nature but are the languages of the indigenous peoples of the Pacific, Africa, and the Americas. If we take these into account we obtain a quite different picture of counting systems from that of the Eurocentric view. This study, which attempts to answer these questions, is the culmination of more than twenty years on the counting systems of the indigenous and largely unwritten languages of the Pacific region and it involved extensive fieldwork as well as the consultation of published and rare unpublished sources. -

Library of Congress Subject Headings for the Pacific Islands
Library of Congress Subject Headings for the Pacific Islands First compiled by Nancy Sack and Gwen Sinclair Updated by Nancy Sack Current to January 2020 Library of Congress Subject Headings for the Pacific Islands Background An inquiry from a librarian in Micronesia about how to identify subject headings for the Pacific islands highlighted the need for a list of authorized Library of Congress subject headings that are uniquely relevant to the Pacific islands or that are important to the social, economic, or cultural life of the islands. We reasoned that compiling all of the existing subject headings would reveal the extent to which additional subjects may need to be established or updated and we wish to encourage librarians in the Pacific area to contribute new and changed subject headings through the Hawai‘i/Pacific subject headings funnel, coordinated at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa.. We captured headings developed for the Pacific, including those for ethnic groups, World War II battles, languages, literatures, place names, traditional religions, etc. Headings for subjects important to the politics, economy, social life, and culture of the Pacific region, such as agricultural products and cultural sites, were also included. Scope Topics related to Australia, New Zealand, and Hawai‘i would predominate in our compilation had they been included. Accordingly, we focused on the Pacific islands in Melanesia, Micronesia, and Polynesia (excluding Hawai‘i and New Zealand). Island groups in other parts of the Pacific were also excluded. References to broader or related terms having no connection with the Pacific were not included. Overview This compilation is modeled on similar publications such as Music Subject Headings: Compiled from Library of Congress Subject Headings and Library of Congress Subject Headings in Jewish Studies. -

It highlights both positive and negative factors which caused both success and decline in the historical period from the introduction of vernacular literacy to the present, factors such as orthography, motivation, the place of the Huli scriptures and other printed matter, the influence of education in English and the prestige attributed to both English and Pidgin; and will conclude with a comment on the current status and prospects of vernacular literacy in the Elementary Schools. It delineates the three phases of development, and the fourth stage, a stage of declension. It highlights both positive and negative factors which caused both success and decline in the historical period from the commencement to the present, factors such as orthography, motivation, the place of the Huli Scriptures and other printed matter, the influence of education in English and the influence and use of Pidgin; and will conclude with a comment on the current status and prospects of vernacular literacy in the Elementary Schools. -

Abstract This thesis is an introduction to Duna, a language spoken by approximately 25,000 people living in Southern Highlands Province in Papua New Guinea. Duna (also known as Yuna) is classified as a member of the Duna-Bogaya subgroup of the Trans New Guinea family. This study is primarily based on work with Duna speakers of the Lake Kopiago region. The thesis provides a basic treatment of phonology, describes the structure of simple sentences, and examines in detail the expression of epistemic assessment (the treatment of a proposition as representing knowledge), a semantic domain that is richly encoded by bound morphemes in the language. Chapter 1 gives background information concerning the Duna lands, people, and language situation. It also describes previous work that has been done on the language, and the nature and sources of the data used in this study. -

INTRODUCTION he Hull of Papua New Guinea are an ethnic group of between sixty and T seventy thousand people, mainly distributed over the Tagali River Basin of the Southern Highlands District (see Figure 1).^ The Hull language, a tone language, is a member of the Enga-Huli-Pole-Wiru family of languages (Wurm 1961). The topography of the Hull area is largely undulating limestone country, dissected by ridges and old volcanic ranges. This allows for the easy migration of people, which produces a homogeneity of culture throughout the entire tribal area,^ The Huh cultivate extensive vegetable gardens, sweet-potato being their dietary staple. Family and kinship ties form the basis for land ownership, and there is no village or commune system. The Huli have no chieftain system of hereditary social hierarchy. A person's talents and achievements determine his wealth and influence. Married couples do not live together in the same house, but occupy separate houses on the same land. As a result of these social characteristics, the Huli tend to be very individualistic in temperament. They are a strong self-assertive people, who regard their culture as being superior to that of their neighbors. They are proud of the beauty of their homeland and are very aware of their history. -

2 The Trans New Guinea family Andrew Pawley and Harald Hammarström 2.1 Introduction The island of New Guinea is a region of spectacular, deep linguistic diversity.1 It contains roughly 850 languages, which on present evidence fall into at least 18 language families that are not demonstrably related, along with several iso- lates.2 This immense diversity, far greater than that found in the much larger area of Europe, is no doubt mainly a consequence of the fact that New Guinea has been occupied for roughly 50,000 years by peoples organised into small kin-based social groups, lacking overarching political affiliations, and dispersed across a terrain largely dominated by rugged mountains and swampy lowlands, with quite frequent population movements. Among the non-Austronesian families of New Guinea one family stands out for its large membership and wide geographic spread: Trans New Guinea (TNG). With a probable membership of between 300 and 500 discrete languages, plus hundreds of highly divergent dialects, TNG is among the most numerous of the world’s language families.3 TNG languages are spoken from the Bomberai Pen- insula at the western end of mainland New Guinea (132 degrees E) almost to the eastern tip of the island (150 degrees E). Most of the cordillera that runs for more than 2000 kilometers along the centre of New Guinea is occupied exclusively by TNG languages. They are also prominent in much of the lowlands to the south of the cordillera and in patches to the north, especially from central Madang Province eastwards. There are possible outliers spoken on Timor, Alor and Pantar.
