THE NORTH-EAS TERN EUROPE IN THE MIDDLE AGES: THE CONTROVERSIAL ISSUES OF ETHNIC AND POLITICAL HISTORY. Pylypchuk Ya.V. This paper deals with the ethno-political history of Finnish peoples of North- Eastern Europe in the Middle Ages. Toymichi this Finno-Permian people. But besides these Western Finns there are other small nationalities in Central and Northern Russia, such as the Erza and Mokša Mordvins, the Čeremis, Votiaks, Permians, and Zịrians, to whom the term is very properly applied, though with the qualifying adjective—Eastern. Except by Folklorists, little attention is paid in Great Britain to these peoples, and much that is written of them abroad finds no response here, the 'silver streak' acting, it would seem, as a non-conductor to such unsensational and feeble vibrations. Although the languages of the Eastern and Western Finns differ as much perhaps among themselves as the various members of the Aryan group, the craniological and physical differences between any two Finnish groups is very much less than between the Latin and the Teutonic groups, for instance.

Although there were proponents of language contacts as a factor in language change, i.e. historical linguistics in Europe – the main representatives in Balkan studies – the interest in language contact is of a fairly recent origin. Nowadays, one can hardly avoid dealing with it, if one takes the research of lan- guage change seriously. This does not, of course, minimize the role of language- inherent change or typological tendencies. The effect of a contiguous linguistic system is an additive factor, but sometimes it crucially defines the types of change, sometimes even leads to a total change of language, a language shift. Formerly, the effects of another language were termed superstratum, sub- stratum and adstratum. When dealing with the European North, Russia, the two latter terms are relevant. In a substratum situation, one language takes another’s place entirely, preserving some features of the former linguistic system. Typical- ly, such features are phonetic or syntactic. Since the seminal monograph by Terrence Kaufman and Sarah G. Thomason (1988), this change is called lan- guage shift, thus highlighting the point of view of the speakers who shift from one language to another.

E-mail: rogachev.mgu@gmail Abstract The usurpation of the right to unite the surrounding territories bestowed some exclusive rights upon Moscow. Which other coat of arms apart from that of Moscow could surround itself with such a suite, such an entourage, of serving shields of arms on its heraldic map? An almost ideal social and geographical model is drawn up around the capital by the coats of arms of Moscow’s retinue: all three principal forces of society are gathered in this national nucleus — those being craftsmen, parishioners and warriors — forming the trade, monastic and defense appendages to St. George’s robe. A century ago, the Bolsheviks placed Russia within a chain of catastrophic events and then effectively ring-fenced the country for about seventy years. The article below was first published in Geograffity magazine in the early 1990s when the Iron Curtain finally came down. The emergence of a magazine like Geograffity was a result of cultural claustrophobia, and it was one of the first attempts in the former Soviet Union to expose the world to the ideas of Russian intellectuals who had worked in total isolation for so many years. Geograffity was produced by Quantum Bureau (Russia), a subsidiary of the Russian Academy of Science and a well-known publisher of Quantum magazine, an English language replica of Kvant, an outstanding Soviet journal popularizing the maths and sciences among the youth.

Keywords: Asyka, ethno-local group, Komi of the Vishera River, mos’, Pam, pastǝr, por, Yaz’va-Komi INTRODUCTION TO THE PROBLEMATICS The Permic and Ob-Ugric languages belong to different branches of the Uralic languages, but at the same time, the Komi and the Ob-Ugric peoples have strong kin and cultural relations that are much closer than those with the peoples of their own language groups (Zherebtsov 1982; Kyzlasov 1984; Napolskikh 1991, 1998; Konovalova 1999; Belavin 2000; Martynova & Pivneva 2001; Hekel 2001: 54, 59–62; Krachkovsky 2004; Napolskikh 2007, 2008; Kosarev 2008). The disproportion of lexical borrowings reflects the predominant influence of the Komi on the Ob-Ugric peoples, starting from the Late Middle Ages: in the Komi language, there are 25–30 words of Ob-Ugric origin, while in the Ob-Ugric languages, the number of borrowings from the Komi language amounts to 200– 400 words. In the Ob-Ugric languages, there are even some sacral terms bor- rowed from the Permic (not Udmurt) dialects: Mansi карт, east-Khanty кәрт ‘sacrificial blood’ (< pre-Permic гôрд ‘blood’) or Ob-Ugric Калтась, Каттась (< pre-Permic *Кылдысь-инь ‘female deity of child-bearing, fertility, and fate’; *кылдiсь ‘the one who determines fate and gives birth’ + *инь ‘mother, wife, woman’ > Udm.

"Samvydav" in Ukraine and "Samizdat" in the RSFSR constitute the self-published clandestine literature proliferated by means of retyping from the original unpublished works of the dissidents.     HOW IT WAS IN REALITY A.T.Fomenko , G.V.Nosovskiy PREFACE 1. THE UNIVERSALLY ACCEPTED VERSION OF WORLD HISTORY WAS CREATED ONLY IN THE XVII CENTURY. IT WAS REFINED UP UNTIL THE XIX CENTURY. THIS VERSION IS INCORRECT. The present book occupies a unique place among our publications on the New Chronology. It was written by popular demand of our readers. Many people tell us: "You criticized the currently accepted version of chronology and the version of the history based on it. You suggested your dating methods and pointed out many duplicates (repetitions), considerably 'shortening' the written history of mankind. Suppose you are right. But then an important question arises: What happened in reality? Could you write a 'concise guide' on your new chronology and the new version of history"? We fragmentarily outlined our reconstruction several times. Now, when a vast amount of material has accumulated, there arrived a moment to put together the main findings and to reconstruct the actual past. In [1v] and [2v] we showed that the archaeological and physical methods of dating which exist today, including the famous radiocarbon method, are unfortunately poorly suited for the dating of artefacts 1-2 thousand years old. These methods produce errors comparable to the age of the samples. We will rely on the new chronology which we established based on the mathematical, empirical and statistical results presented in the first three books of the 'Chronology' in seven volumes and also in [6v3], ch.2. The main chronological shifts – by approximately 333 years, 1050 years and 1800 years discovered by A.T.Fomenko in 'ancient' and mediaeval history are indicated in the Global Chronological Map (ГХК) created by A.T.Fomenko in 1975-1979.

Discussing different components of the colonization process, the authors argue that the initial colonization of this region could not have been carried out earlier than the Neolithic, because in their understanding settlement is the economic development of the territory, and therefore the first attempts to penetrate the primitive collectives to the North cannot be interpreted as either the initial settlement or the initial development.
