Best regards, Norm Silverstein [email protected] @normWXXI Q&A WITH A WXXI UNDERWRITER SEABREEZE AMUSEMENT PARK has been a favorite summertime regional destination for generations. John Norris, Vice President, explains its enduring appeal. Q. How would you describe Seabreeze? How long has the park been in operation? Seabreeze is a family-oriented amusement park and waterpark, located on the bluffs overlooking Lake Ontario and Irondequoit Bay. The park is entering its 136th season of operation. NTS Q. As the 4th oldest amusement park in America, what has been a significant factor to its longevity? One of the most significant factors is that it has been owned and operated by the same family since the 1940’s. The first generation came to Seabreeze in 1904 as carousel concessionaires, the fifth generation now manages the park, and the sixth generation is also actively involved. Q. What is the annual attendance at Seabreeze? Any idea about the number of hot dogs sold? Seabreeze entertains hundreds of thousands of people from Rochester, the Finger Lakes, Syracuse, and Southern Tier areas. Last year the park sold 49,416 hot dogs! EVE Q. What separates Seabreeze from other amusement parks in the Northeast? We have a strong appeal to young families. We’re not too small and not too big. There’s also a sense of history and tradition at Seabreeze, with generations of families visiting the park, seeing old & photos and classic rides, and making new memories. Q. What would you like the WXXI audience to know about Seabreeze? S If you haven’t visited the park in the past few years, so much has changed! The best days to visit are weekdays. On Mondays all summer, senior citizens get a free Spectator Pass which allows them access to the grounds. Q. What do visitors feel is the most nostalgic ride at the park? The Jack Rabbit is the oldest continuously operating roller coaster in America. It serves as a true “rite of passage” for children when they reach 48 inches tall and can finally ride! EW Q. What is the most popular ride/attraction at Seabreeze? It’s a tie between the Jack Rabbit and the Whirlwind, our spinning steel roller coaster. A close third is everyone’s favorite, the Bumper Cars. seabreeze.com N JOHN NORRIS, VICE PRESIDENT To learn more about underwriting on WXXI, email [email protected] CAMPAIGN UPDATE The “Go Public” Campaign is a critical $17 million effort for the future of WXXI. A Painful Piece of Italian History, Overlooked Published on iItaly.org (http://iitaly.org) A Painful Piece of Italian History, Overlooked Eleonora Mazzucchi (June 24, 2008) Italians living in the former Yugoslavia during the Second World War break the silence about the sorrow they endured and the massive flight they were forced to make. It is a chapter in Italian history scraped from textbooks, in no small part because of the Italian government, and brought to the fore with an exhibit at the Italian Consulate. We spoke with celebrity chef Lidia Matticchio Page 1 of 5 A Painful Piece of Italian History, Overlooked Published on iItaly.org (http://iitaly.org) Bastianich, a native of Istria (now Croatia), who like many Istrians, has waited to see this piece of her history recognized The Second World War is the conflict they say we’ll never forget. Manifold atrocities, subjugations, sufferings and displacements are its legacy, the very exemplary of a brutality we are warned not to repeat, but even as we dutifully recall the war’s effects there remain episodes we speak little of today. Among them are the events that took place between Italy and the former Yugoslavia. The tension between the two central European giants, that fomented tragedy for one population of Italians in particular, is rather complex and merits some explaining. Sizeable border areas, Istria, Dalmatia, and the Quarnero islands, now part of Croatia, and the cities of Trieste and Gorizia, disputed between Italy and Yugoslavia and at present Italian, contained both Slavs and ethnic Italians in the 1940’s.

PART ONE THE DOCTOR AND HIS COMPANIONS 1 1 A Young-Old Face Out with the New and in with the Old in Doctor Who Richard Hewett Introduction ‘I approve of your new face, Doctor - so much more like mine.’ This line, spoken by the now ancient, enervated and seemingly dying Davros in ‘The Magician’s Apprentice’, is just one of many age-related barbs directed at the Twelfth Doctor during Peter Capaldi’s reign, serving as a constant reminder that the Time Lord is no longer (if, indeed, his on-screen self ever was)1 a young man. Throughout his tenure, friends and foes alike highlighted the latest incarnation’s wrinkled, somewhat cadaverous visage, grey hair, and scrawny body, the Doctor being variously described as a ‘desiccated man crone’ (‘Robot of Sherwood’), a ‘grey-haired stick insect’ (‘Listen’), and a ‘skeleton man’ (‘Last Christmas’).
