WILLIAM GOLDING (Playwright): was _.born il) Cornwall, in 1911. Although as a youth he looked forward to a career as a scientist, during hi~ studies at Oxford he shifted from the study of science to the study of English Literature. During the Second World War, Mr. Golding served in the Royal Navy, and since then has divided his time between teaching and writing. His best known and most popular work is LORD OF THE FLIES (1945), and his other work includes THE INHER­ ITORS (1955), PINCHER MARTIN (1956; published in the United States as TWO DEATHS OF CHRISTOPHER MARTIN), and FREE FALL (1958). THE BRASS BUTTERFLY was first per­ formed at Oxford in 1958 under the direction of Alistair Sim, who played the Emperor both in the Oxford and London productions. The play is based on Mr. Golding's long story, "Envoy Extraordinarytt, which has been published in the collection, SOMETIME, NEVER (1956). ~ . ' LLEN LEICHT (Director): has recent ly r e t ur ned home after a sojourn in the reg- i onal theatre, serving first as Associate Director of Buffalo's Studio Arena Theater and at Cincinnati's Playhouse in the Park. His productions include stag­ i ngs of THE MIKADO, LUV, THE IMAGINARY INVALID, H4 M. S. PINAFORE, THE LESSON, and Rossini's IL BARBIERE DI SIVIGLIA for the Buffalo Philarmonic. Mr. Leicht holds the usual degrees from the usual Eastern universities, writes plays and f ilms, and is married to actress, Renee Lippin. DO UGLAS HIGGINS (Design): is a graduate of the Theater and Fine Arts Department of the University of British Columbia and the Yale School of Drama, majoring in design at both institutions. While at Yale, Mr. Higgins designed the Yale productions of VOLPONE and TIS PITY SHE'S A WHORE. He has designed settings for s everal productions directed by Mr. Leicht at the Buffalo Studio ~ena Theater. ~ r. Higgins is currently working as . an art director in films~ LINDA FISHER (Costumes): a graduate of the University of Texas and Yale School of Drama, Miss Fisher has been costume assistant for the Oregon Shakespeare Fes­ tival, and the Festival of the Arts at Dartmouth College. She has designed cos­ t umes for the Yale Repertory production of THREE SISTERS, as well as the graduate ~hesis productions of LITTLE MALCOLM AND HIS STRUGGLE AGAINST THE EUNOCHS, X­ NqTES ON A PRIVATE MYTHOLOGY, and YOU CAN'T TAKE IT WITH YOU at Yale University .. Miss Eisher has also designed the costumes for the Williamstown Summer Theater pr oductions of THE SEAGULL, WAIT UNTIL DARK, BLACK COMEDY, and HOW TO SUCCEED IN BUSINE SS WITHOUT REALLY TRYING, and will soon be doing the same for the Arena Stage 's production of THE CHEMMY CIRCLE (a farce by Feydeau which was co-trans­ lated_by Paxton Whitehead who plays the Emperor in this production) .

.~ PENCE R MOSSE (Lighting): designed the lighting for last season's production of ~HRONICLE and THE JUDAS APPLAUSE at the Chelsea Theater Center, and is currently ~h e resident lighting designer for the Hartford Stage Company. Mr. Mosse studied f or two years at the Yale School of Drama, and has assisted with the lighting for productions of the New York Shakespeare Festival, the American Ballet Theater, the Stratford Shakespeare Festival in Ontario, and the American Shakespeare Fes­ t ival in Stratford, Connecticut. Last summer, Mr. Masse was a consultant for the City of New York for the STREET FESTIVAL, and recently did the lighting for PLAY ' A; THE TIMES at the New York Shakespeare Festival's Other Stage at the Public heater. OBERT BARLOW (Musical Director): is receiving his Doctorate in Musical Arts i s year from Juilliard School of Music. Mr. Barlow made- his musical debut at the age of fifteen as a soloist with the Rochester Civic Orchestra, and at the age of eighteen performed as a solo recitalist at the Carnegie Recital Hall. He has performed as principal harpist for the Buffalo Philarmonic, and appeared as featured soloist with the Eastman-Rochester Orchestra in the world premiere of "Images", Concerto for Harp, by Wayne Barlow. In June of 1969, Mr. Barlow ·cs t he winner of the National Competition, American Harp Society, Young Pro­ •~ssi onal Division.

CHRI STOPHER LEAHY (Mamillius): is -a graduate of the University of ,Virginia where played leading roles in CANDIDA, A MAN FOR ALL SEASONS, THE DUCHESS OF MALFI, lHE IN SPECTOR GENERAL, and OH DAD, POOR DAD ..• After spending a summer with the y~.rtm outh Summer Repertory, Mr. Leahy performed as a resident actor at Vassar Col l ege during the 1967-68 season, playing Frederick in Strindberg's THE PELICAN, he Son in SIX CHARACTERS IN SEARCH OF AN AUTHOR, and Jacob in THE FIELD GOD. r . Leahy was recently seen in the American Theater Club's production of SOUND­ NG S .

~OBERT BARRY (Captain of the Guard): played the Barkeep in the Off-Broadway ·oduction of THE DRUNKARD, and has appeared in such plays as THINOCEROS, UNDER I L ~~OOD, and THE TENTH MAN. He toured Texas and Louisiana in productions of

2 40BERT BARRY ... CAROUSEL, MUSIC MAN, PAJAMA GAME, and GYPSY. His film cr~ .... 1ts include THE NIGHT THEY RAIDED MINSKYS, GOODBYE COLUMBUS, and Zero Mostel's stand -in in the soon to be released, ANGEL LEVINE. On television, he has been seen in the special, TAKE IT OFF, and in THE GUIDING LIGHT, as well as numerous com­ mercials. Mr. Barry is also a singer, and has performed in many nightclubs as a singer-guitarist. GASTONE ROSSILLI (Postumus): performed the role of Achilles opposite Irene Pappas in the Off-Broadway production of IPHIGENIA IN AULIS. He appeared as Hamlet in the National Tour of ROSENCRANTZ AND GUILDENSTERN ARE DEAD, and has also per­ formed with the APA in their productions of PANTAGLEIZE, WAR AND PE~CE, and MAN AND SUPERMAN. On film, Mr. Rossilli played .the part of Hanzel in MIDNIGHT COW­ BOY, and appeared on television in a documentary on Melina Mercouri playing Or­ estes opposite her Electra in excerpts from the ORESTEIA. FAXTON WHITEHEAD (Emperor): has been the Artistic Director of the at Niagara on the Lake-Canada since 1967 where he has also appeared with Zoe Caldwell in , in , Lili Kedrova in Molnar's THE GUARDSMAN, as well as in productions of ARJ\fS AND THE MAN, THE DOC­ TOR'S DILEMMA, , and many otherse Mr. Whithead replaced i.n BEYOND THE FRINGE, and has appeared in the New York productions of THE AFFAIR, ONE WAY PENDULUM, GALLOWS HUMOR. He has made numerous appearances in regional theaters in productions such as THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST, THE RIVALS, CHARLEY'S AUNT, THE ENTERTAINER, as well as performing at Stratford, Connecticut, Stratford on the Avon, and in the Soviet Union. With Suzanne Gros­ sman,-Mr. Whitehead has translated Feydeau's THE CHEMMY CIRCLE which has been rerformed at the Shaw Festival as well as the Mark Taper Forum, and will be pro­ duced by the Arena Stage next month. The Shaw Festivalts 1970 season will in­ ~ lude CANDIDA, and the North American premiere of Alan Bennett's FORTY YEARS ON. J"ERROLD ZIMAN (Usher): is a graduate of the University of Chicago, and has stud­ ied voice and mime in England and produced and directed films in Paris and Lon­ don. His credits include work at Chicago's Hull House, Second City, the Arts Lab(London), the Essex Festival, and the Edinburgh Festival~ SAl\1 WATERSTON (Phanocles): was recently featured in the Broadway production of INDIANS. Mr. Waterston has appeared on Broadway in OH DAD, POOR DAD ... playing the part of Jonathan, and as Anthony Quayle's son in Peter Ustinov's HALFWAY UP THE TREE. His Off-Broadway credits include leading roles in RED CROSS-MU­ ZEE¥-A, THE KNACK, ERGO, FITZ AND BISQUIT, LA TURISTA, as well as the part of Prince Hal in the New York Shakespeare Festival's production of HENRY IV, PARTS J AND II. Mr. Waterston has appeared on television on Channel 13, NYPD, and HAWK, and has been seen in the films FITZWILLY, GENERATION, RUN SHADOW RUN, and the recently released, THREE. ARLENE NADEL (Euphrosyne): a graduate of Northwestern University, Miss Nadel has been seen on Broadway in RED, WHITE, AND MADDOX, as '~ell as in the Equity Library Theater productions of ROMEO AND JEANETTE, and YOU NEVER CAN TELL. She has performed leading roles Off-Off Broadway in Dryden's ALL FOR LOVE, and in Valery's MY FAUST, as well as for the Darnnouth Repertory Theater in TWELFTH NIGHT and MOTHER COURAGE. Miss Nadel was featured 1n Theater Atlanta's pro­ ductions of MEMBER OF THE WEDDING, KING LEAR, DARK OF THE MOON, THE MAD SHOW, ant WHO'S AFRAID OF VIRGINIA WOOLF. She will next be seen as Elena in the Stage/ West production of UNCLE VANYA. MARK ROOTSTEIN (Sergeant): appeared in the INSIDES OF ORCHID PRICE and FREE, FREE, FREE at the Hunter College Playwrights project last year. He has also performed with the Creative Arts Workshop of Trenton, New Jersey, and in numer­ ous Off-Off Broadway productions.
