Settlement Profile: Ilsington 1 Introduction
Ilsington is located about 5 miles north east of Ashburton, in an elevated position on the eastern edge of the moor. Historically it was a small agricultural settlement with a linear emphasis along the main street to the west of the church and the Manor House to the east. The Manor House was once of considerable size but succumbed to misuse
and disuse over the centuries only to turn into
wall reinstatement works in the churchyard uncovered some of the last existing remains of the structure. The rest of the village appears to have
been a small farming community with Town Barton being a focus of activity, along with the church, church house, the smithy and the inn.
The village has a reasonable range of services and facilities for its size. Church, good sized village hall and car park, inn, primary school, sports facilities are
present. With the closure of the village shop/post office, the community rallied to establish a shop within the village hall.
