In the year 2004 the Central Archives published the second edition of its guide to sources on Polish Jewry, in the original and in microfilm, which had been catalogued by the Central Archives until the end of 2000. While the first edition, published in 1988, presented the relatively poor pre-Glasnost scope of East-European archival documentation, the 2004 edition summarized the first decade of survey and research in archives of the former Soviet Union. The second edition represented extensive work in former Polish, Austrian and German government archives, situated in the former Soviet Union, relating to approximately 1000 cities, towns and villages and ranging from the 14 th to the 20 th centuries. The guide was published together with Avotaynu Foundation Inc., and has been acclaimed by researchers and genealogists alike. As mentioned above, the 2004 printed version describes material obtained by the Central Archives until the end 2000. Twelve years have passed since then. Millions of documents relating to Polish Jewry have been obtained by the Central Archives in various media since then, especially material relating to the Jews of Galicia and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. However, the most important change is not in the quantitative aspects. The new millennium has been accompanied by new methods of making data available to the public. We have thus decided to place a digital version of the Guide on the internet. We preferred to devote our limited personnel to mounting full fledged catalogue entries on the web, rather than investing much time in a full revision of the guide, which would become out dated the day after we published it. The basis of this version remains the 2004 printed edition, with two important additions . 1) Hundreds of new communities have been added; and 2) special reference was made to entries containing genealogical material. The Guide This guide is arranged geographically, beginning with material relating to the Jews of Poland as a whole, followed by regional entries and then by individual entries for each community, in alphabetical order. Each town name is accompanied by district (powiat) and province (województwo) to which it belongs. When a particular town is itself the seat of its district, only the province name is noted. The material consists of originals, xerox or photocopies, microfilms and digital copies. Virtually all of the originals are of Jewish provenance, while the photocopies, microfilms and scans are generally of non Jewish provenance. Some Jewish material was located and microfilmed in official repositories (such as the Centrum Judaicum in Berlin and state archives in Lwów, Kraków and Łód ź). The descriptions are arranged by record groups, in chronological order. The material within each record group is described in chronological order as well. The borders of Poland by which material is arranged in the Central Archives and in the guide are those which were in effect between the two World Wars. Thus prominent contemporary Polish cities such as Wrocław (Breslau), Szczecin (Stettin) and Gda ńsk 3 Sources on Polish Jewry at the Central Archives for the History of the Jewish People (Danzig), which were not in Poland between the Wars, are absent from the guide, while Lwów and Wilno, today in the Ukraine and Lithuania respectively, do appear. Poland was partitioned three times (in 1772, 1792 and 1795) between Austria, Prussia and Russia, and disappeared as a political entity until after World War I. Material on Polish Jews can therefore be found in Austrian, German, Russian, Ukrainian and Belorussian as well as in Polish archives. Many documents are accordingly in Polish, German, Russian and Ukrainian. The names of the archives and of the cities in which they are located are cited as they are today. Lwów, for instance, is written Lviv and the archives in this city bear Ukrainian names. The names of the archival record groups, on the other hand, remain in their original languages. The names of the entries, however, are given in their Polish form. German equivalents of Polish names are provided in an appendix. The languages of the files are given in square brackets. Most of the files are entirely in Polish, in which case, no language is cited. The first, 1998 edition, was edited by (now Prof.) Adam Teller. The 2004 edition, on which the digital version is based, was compiled and edited by Hanna Volovici, Witold Medikowski, Hadassah Assouline and Benyamin Lukin, with the assistance of (now Prof.) Rachel Manekin and Olga Shraberman. Olga Shraberman has integrated the corrections and updates to this 2012 edition, which were edited by Benyamin Lukin. BOCHNIA, W ŚWIETLE BADAŃ LAT 1965—1967 i 1972 WSTĘP W Łapczycy położonej w odległości 4 km w kierunku zachodnim od Bochni, na prawym brzegu Raby znajduje się grodzisko usytuowane na wzniesieniu o na- zwie „Grodzisko" (ryc. 1—2). Jest to jeden z cyplowatych występów pasma wznie- sień, ciągnącego się równoleżnikowo od miejscowości Chełm — a ściślej od potoku Moszczenickiego — na zachodzie po Bochnię na wschodzie, stanowiącego granicę między Pogórzem Karpackim a Kotliną Sandomierską. Grodzisko leży na północnym stoku owego grzbietu, znacznie poniżej jego kulminacji i ograniczone jest od pół- nocy, północnego zachodu oraz północnego wschodu doliną Raby, która dawniej prze- pływała bezpośrednio u jego podnóża (obecnie koryto rzeki znajduje się w odle- głości 230 m na północ). Od południa i południowego wschodu zbocza grodziska opadają stromo do małej doliny z wysychającym okresowo niedużym strumykiem bez nazwy, natomiast od strony zachodniej i południowo-zachodniej, gdzie teren wznosi się łagodnie ku południowi, obiekt oddzielony był od pozostałej części wzgó- rza naturalnym obniżeniem, pogłębionym sztucznie w celu zwiększenia obronności. Wschodnia partia grodziska zniszczona została częściowo przez wybieranie gliny, majdan zaś, zbocze zachodnie i podgrodzie zajęte są pod uprawę, która spowodo- wała silne zniwelowanie wałów. Pierwotną formę i rozmiary grodu wyznaczają naturalne załomy zboczy oraz zachowane miejscami fragmenty umocnień obronnych. Wskazują one, że gród skła- dał się z dwóch części: z grodu właściwego w kształcie nieregularnego owalu zbliżonego do wieloboku o wym. 96 X 58 m, tj. 55,68 ara, wydłużonego wzdłuż osi NE—SW (ryc. 3), i czworobocznego podgrodzia o powierzchni 60,9 ara (105 X 58 m), przylegającego do grodu od strony północno-wschodniej.

The article focuses on the economic partnerships and patronages formed by Jews in Vilnius. It also highlights the importance of the immediate hinterland for their business opportunities. The Jewish community in Vilnius, the biggest in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania (GDL) since the 1700s, has not attracted similar historiographical attention2 for its eco- nomic history as some of the smaller communities in GDL.3 Out of the available works about the history of the Vilnius Jewish community, perhaps Israel Cohen4 provid- ed the most comprehensive analyses of its economic situation. He had access to some of the communal documents, which gave interesting insights into daily economic life, communal provisions, and competition with the Christian artisans (although it could be argued this was slightly exaggerated). The competitive nature of the community’s economic life was also the focus of extensive work done by Jurgita Verbickienė.5 How- ever, as she mostly relied on legal documents and litigations, her work emphasized both the normative and competitive side of the Jews’ economic life in Vilnius.

    A Fresh Perspective on the History of Hasidic Judaism

    eSharp Issue 20: New Horizons A Fresh Perspective on the History of Hasidic Judaism Eva van Loenen (University of Southampton) Introduction In this article, I shall examine the history of Hasidic Judaism, a mystical,1 ultra-orthodox2 branch of Judaism, which values joyfully worshipping God’s presence in nature as highly as the strict observance of the laws of Torah3 and Talmud.4 In spite of being understudied, the history of Hasidic Judaism has divided historians until today. Indeed, Hasidic Jewish history is not one monolithic, clear-cut, straightforward chronicle. Rather, each scholar has created his own narrative and each one is as different as its author. While a brief introduction such as this cannot enter into all the myriad divergences and similarities between these stories, what I will attempt to do here is to incorporate and compare an array of different views in order to summarise the history of Hasidism and provide a more objective analysis, which has not yet been undertaken. Furthermore, my historical introduction in Hasidic Judaism will exemplify how mystical branches of mainstream religions might develop and shed light on an under-researched division of Judaism. The main focus of 1 Mystical movements strive for a personal experience of God or of his presence and values intuitive, spiritual insight or revelationary knowledge. The knowledge gained is generally ‘esoteric’ (‘within’ or hidden), leading to the term ‘esotericism’ as opposed to exoteric, based on the external reality which can be attested by anyone. 2 Ultra-orthodox Jews adhere most strictly to Jewish law as the holy word of God, delivered perfectly and completely to Moses on Mount Sinai.

Education Academy Lithuania DOI: 10.17460/PHO_2019.3_4.01 CHILD EDUCATION IN THE FAMILY OF MICHAŁ KLEOFAS OGIŃSKI (1765–1833) INTRODUCTION In the early modern period, domestic education or home schooling was a form of education equal to school-based education. However, the mid-seventeenth cen- tury Western European crisis of trust in the system of education maintained by the monasteries and convents fostered attitudes among the elites of societies in favour of private home education. Such attitudes were amplified by the Jansenist ideas, which promoted teaching pupils in small groups. Teaching in monastery schools was also opposed in the works by François Fénelon and John Locke (1632–1704), which supported systemically organized and individualized education of children at home (Jakubiak, 2017, p. 20–22; Jakubiak, Nawrot-Borowska, 2019, p. 79). Locke’s Some Thoughts Concerning Education (1692) followed by new mod­ ified editions in 1695, 1699 and 1705, changed the philosophy of child education. Locke, believing that a human soul or a manner of thinking, orientation in values and a drive for action come to the fore upon the impact from external impressions and experiences, asserted in his works that everything a human being is faced with during development has a determinant value. For that reason, only properly organized education creates conditions for the skills of an individual to rational­ ly use available freedoms and suitably adjust to physical, moral, intellectual and political conditions of the surrounding world.

The Israel Genealogical Society | "Sharsheret Hadorot" | 1 | From the Editor’s Desk // Dr. Leah Teicher Dear Readers, “Er iz a Galitsianer”, my father used to say about a Galician Jew, and that said everything about a person: he had a sense of humor; he was cunning, a survivor, a reader, a fan of music, musicians and culture; a religious person, and mostly, a Yiddish speaker and a Holocaust survivor. For years, Galicia had been a part of Poland. Its scenery, woods and rivers had been our parents’ memories. A Jewish culture had developed in Galicia, the Yiddish language was created there, customs established, unique Jewish foods cooked, the figure of the “Yiddishe Mame” developed, inspiring a good deal of genealogical research; “Halakhot” and Rabbinic Laws made; an authoritative leadership established in the towns, organizing communities on their social institutions – Galicia gave birth to the “Shttetl” – the Jewish town, on all its social-historical and emotional implications.

In Łódź Voivodeship (a unit of Poland’s administrative 6 division) there are 28 such settlements inhabited by almost 210,000 people. The aim of the study is to analyse the potential of the heritage of national minorities in the towns of Łódź Voivodeship. The town of Brzeziny was selected for the study as national minorities played a prominent role in its land development in the past. KEYWORDS: towns, cultural heritage, national minorities, Brzeziny. Celem podjętych rozważań jest analiza potencjału dziedzictwa mniejszości narodowych w małych miastach regionu łódzkiego.
