The Bicentenary Debate Saturday 7 February Following a celebratory dinner for Officers and Presidents past and present, the Union will play host to a series of high profile speakers to debate a motion on The Cambridge Union itself. This will be a chance for resident and non- resident members to engage with the Union’s long and prestigious history, celebrating the old as well as the new. This event will be exclusively for members of the Cambridge Union, and will feature a black tie photograph before the debate begins. The Cambridge Union The Bicentenary Ball ‘A Night in History’ Friday 20 February See the Union as you have never seen it before. The Union will be transformed for one night only, celebrating 200 years of our history with a magnificent Ball, starting at 9.00pm and going on into the small hours of the morning. This event is exclusively for current students, and is a chance to celebrate the Union’s history as a social hub. The Cambridge Union 6 Celebrating 200 Years The celebrations will be an opportunity for the Union to engage with its non-resident members and show them modern face of the Union. The 2015 Garden Party May Week, 2015 The 2015 Garden Party will take over the entirety of the Sidney Sussex Gardens, and will bring together members resident and non-resident on a summer afternoon to celebrate our long history. This event is open to all current students at the University of Cambridge and Union members. Sidney Sussex Gardens The 200th Anniversary Debate Saturday 26 September 2015 The 2015 Program will culminate in a unique event in Central London in September 2015. For the first time in the Union’s history we will be hosting a debate outside of Cambridge to enable greater access for non-resident members. Following the result of the 2015 General Election, the Union will host speakers to debate an issue of national importance at the historic Middle Temple Hall. This event will be open to all members of the public, with the motion and speakers being announced at the 2015 Garden Party.     Amnesty International Cambridge City Group May 2016 - April 2017 Cambridge Cambridge is an extraordinary city. It is immensely rich - intellectually, historically, culturally, financially. The University of Cambridge has nurtured more Nobel Prize winners than any other institution. Its thriving high tech industries produce the most patent applications in the country. It comes only second in the tables for pupils achieving good GCSE results in maths and English. It has a high population of young people, very few of whom claim benefits. The average weekly income is near the top nationally, as are house prices. As are house prices. Cambridge is the most unequal city in the country. Listed third for house unaffordability, a rise of 122% in homelessness over 2015, five food banks in the city centre, lowest per capita welfare spending, with 30% of children living in poverty in three of the city wards : the difference between those who have and those who have not is stark. This is the environment in which the Amnesty International Cambridge City Group works, a vibrant exciting place to be with problems common to the rest of the country. Cambridge was an early participant in the Amnesty movement. The group, the eighteenth still active in the country, was established in February 1969, a year of great social upheaval in Europe. The relationship between those in power and those who felt unrepresented was put to the test, sometimes violently. In 2016 that relationship was tested on the world stage. The Amnesty International Report 2016-17 says : ‘For millions, 2016 was a year of unrelenting misery and fear, as governments and armed groups abused human rights in a multitude of ways.’ With growing suppression comes growing resistance, an awareness that inaction is not an option.

    ANNUAL REPORT OF THE UNIVERSITY THEATRE SYNDICATE, 2008 – 9 This year, as well as being one of celebration for the University, was also a year of celebration for the ADC Theatre, as it reflected on the completion of many long-term objectives. October 2008 saw the completion of the redevelopment that had started in 2003 and the beginning of a new set of opportunities for the Theatre. The last phase of the building work included the rebuilding of the workshop and dressing rooms, and the creation of a rehearsal and performance studio (The Larkum Studio, named for former Sidney Sussex Bursar and Chairman of the ADC Theatre Executive Committee Charles Larkum). It also saw the installation of a platform lift which allows disabled access to the stage area for the first time in the theatre’s history. The changes were evidently popular with the theatre’s audience, with audience figures breaking the momentous 50,000 mark for the first time in the theatre’s history, as it welcomed 53,000 visitors over 353 performances. Programme Review The Autumn season once again opened with a production from the Cambridge University American Stage Tour: Henry V , which claimed an unprecedented six stars from Varsity. Also back from tour was the Edinburgh sell-out, Devils , written and performed by the Cambridge Footlights. The redeveloped building was re-opened to a selection of alumni and current students with a performance of an exciting new musical written by Cambridge students called Hero , which had also enjoyed a successful run at the Edinburgh Festival. The gala evening was attended by Sir Peter Hall (guest of honour) and Sir Trevor Nunn, and a number of volunteers involved in the building project were invited.
