Amnesty International Cambridge City Group May 2016 - April 2017 Cambridge Cambridge is an extraordinary city. It is immensely rich - intellectually, historically, culturally, financially. The University of Cambridge has nurtured more Nobel Prize winners than any other institution. Its thriving high tech industries produce the most patent applications in the country. It comes only second in the tables for pupils achieving good GCSE results in maths and English. It has a high population of young people, very few of whom claim benefits. The average weekly income is near the top nationally, as are house prices. As are house prices. Cambridge is the most unequal city in the country. Listed third for house unaffordability, a rise of 122% in homelessness over 2015, five food banks in the city centre, lowest per capita welfare spending, with 30% of children living in poverty in three of the city wards : the difference between those who have and those who have not is stark. This is the environment in which the Amnesty International Cambridge City Group works, a vibrant exciting place to be with problems common to the rest of the country. Cambridge was an early participant in the Amnesty movement. The group, the eighteenth still active in the country, was established in February 1969, a year of great social upheaval in Europe. The relationship between those in power and those who felt unrepresented was put to the test, sometimes violently. In 2016 that relationship was tested on the world stage. The Amnesty International Report 2016-17 says : ‘For millions, 2016 was a year of unrelenting misery and fear, as governments and armed groups abused human rights in a multitude of ways.’ With growing suppression comes growing resistance, an awareness that inaction is not an option. -

What the TECH? A look at what this election could mean for the technology sector Cicero Group | December 2019 What the TECH was in the manifestos? Technology and innovation were a theme in all of the major manifestos with each Party professing a desire to take the UK into a future technological revolution. Broadband was almost certainly at the top of the policy charts, with all four major Parties promising the roll out of full fibre broadband and increased internet connectivity to all corners of the UK by 2030. Labour has even promised to renationalise BT in order to deliver this. While the ambition and execution of each Party’s broadband policy may differ, it seems all Parties, whether explicitly or tacitly, believe internet access should now be considered a basic utility available to all. For the digital economy, the promise of increased internet access should be a cause for celebration. More people online means more potential users, customers and shoppers to target. As well as enhancing access and speeds, all major Parties want to ensure our online experiences happen in a safe environment, with each committing itself to tackling the scourge of ‘online harms’, particularly for children. The SNP has even gone as far as to promise the introduction of a new ‘online regulator’ to impose fines and block access to offending platforms, something the previous Conservative Government had only begun to consult on. Away from the internet, it’s clear each Party wants the UK to also lead The number the world in innovative research and manufacturing. QUEENSLAND BRANCH COMMONWEALTH PARLIAMENTARY ASSOCIATION (QUEENSLAND BRANCH) REPORT ON TRAVEL The Westminster Seminar, London 21-25 November 2016 Introduction The annual Westminster Seminar is CPA UK’s flagship capacity-building programme for parliamentarians and procedural and committee Clerks from across the Commonwealth. Every year the five-day programme provides a unique platform for its participants to meet their counterparts and explore parliamentary democracy, practice and procedure within a Westminster framework, and share experiences and challenges faced in their parliamentary work. This year the programme will facilitate rigorous discussions on the continuing evolution of best practice within a Westminster-style framework, as adapted across the Commonwealth. Persons attending The following persons attended from the Queensland Branch: • Ms Di Farmer MP, Deputy Speaker, Queensland Parliament • Mr N Laurie, Clerk of the Parliament and Honorary Secretary Queensland Branch The CPA activity undertaken and program Formal workshops, plenary sessions and tours were held between 21 and 25 November 2016. Detailed below is a description of each session. We acknowledge the use of daily summaries provided by the UK CPA secretariat in the compilation of the information in the descriptions below. Westminster Seminar 2016: Day 1 The seminar was formally opened by the Deputy Speaker and Chairman of Ways and Means, Rt Hon. Lindsay Hoyle MP. In his opening he stressed the importance of the seminar in bringing together parliamentarians and clerks from across the Commonwealth, and praised the work of CPA UK. An overview of the breadth of this year's participants was clear, as delegates then introduced themselves, saying where they were from and their role. -

No known copyright restrictions. 3 Commons Library Briefing, 24 December 2018 Summary In December 2015 HM Revenue & Customs published Making Tax Digital - its strategy to implement a new system of digital tax accounts to be used by businesses, the self- employed and landlords. The Government proposed that the new system would be rolled out over two years, first applying to income tax returns (in 2018), and then extended to VAT (in 2019) and corporation tax (in 2020).1 Initially the Government anticipated that in the first phase from April 2018 businesses, self-employed people and landlords would be required to use digital accounts, updating HMRC on a quarterly basis; employees and pensioners would be exempt, unless they had secondary incomes of more than £10,000 per year from self-employment or property. -

House of Commons Hansard The Government's Plan for Brexit 07 December 2016 Volume 618 Mr Speaker I inform the House that I have selected amendment (a) in the name of the Prime Minister. 12:51:00 Keir Starmer (Holborn and St Pancras) (Lab) I beg to move, That this House recognises that leaving the EU is the defining issue facing the UK; notes the resolution on parliamentary scrutiny of the UK leaving the EU agreed by the House on 12 October 2016; recognises that it is Parliament’s responsibility to properly scrutinise the Government while respecting the decision of the British people to leave the European Union; confirms that there should be no disclosure of material that could be reasonably judged to damage the UK in any negotiations to depart from the European Union after Article 50 has been triggered; and calls on the Prime Minister to commit to publishing the Government’s plan for leaving the EU before Article 50 is invoked. For months, Labour has been pressing the Prime Minister and the Government to set out their plan for Brexit. For months, the Prime Minister and a succession of Ministers have refused to do so, either in writing or from this Dispatch Box. Facing defeat on today’s motion, the Government have now caved in—last-minute amendments tell their own story and everybody knows it. This is a victory for common sense. I thank those from various Opposition parties who backed putting pressure on the Government to disclose their plan, and I thank the Conservative Members who, rightly, want to see far more detail about the approach their Front Benchers are intending to take. -
