Kübra Gür D. Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University, Turkey Abstract: The Marmaray Project was the most important transportation project in Istanbul connecting two sides of Bosphorus which created a great opportunity for the city’s history with a lot of new ar- chaeological discoveries. There were rescue excavations of the major stations of Marmaray held under the authority of Istanbul Archaeology Museums between 2004-2012. The author of this paper worked in Sirkeci Station Excavations within the Historical Peninsula as an architect for six years. With the experience of Marmaray and other rescue excavations in Istanbul, an interdisciplinary system will be discussed for future urban archaeology with the mitigation of the law from an architect’s point of view. There are fundamental differences between working in urban and rural archaeological sites in terms of time and priorities. Urban rescue excavations are obliged to process fast enough for the project require- ments according to the regulations decided by the Regional Council for the Conservation of Cultural Property. However, there could always be conflicts about the methodologies between construction and archaeology teams. So multi-disciplinary environment of the rescue excavations ought to be prepared before the project starts. Convenient legislation for urban archaeology is upon to the upper authorities. Besides the law perspective, there could be some interdisciplinary phases before, during and after the excavations. The construction and archaeology teams must have the proper knowledge about what they deal with for field operations. One of the most important approaches is to integrate archaeological re- search into the evolving methodologies through the process. Also, documentation, inventory, publication and later displaying of rescue excavations is crucially important for future heritage protection. • Hadrian and the Greek East
HADRIAN AND THE GREEK EAST: IMPERIAL POLICY AND COMMUNICATION DISSERTATION Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of the Ohio State University By Demetrios Kritsotakis, B.A, M.A. * * * * * The Ohio State University 2008 Dissertation Committee: Approved by Professor Fritz Graf, Adviser Professor Tom Hawkins ____________________________ Professor Anthony Kaldellis Adviser Greek and Latin Graduate Program Copyright by Demetrios Kritsotakis 2008 ABSTRACT The Roman Emperor Hadrian pursued a policy of unification of the vast Empire. After his accession, he abandoned the expansionist policy of his predecessor Trajan and focused on securing the frontiers of the empire and on maintaining its stability. Of the utmost importance was the further integration and participation in his program of the peoples of the Greek East, especially of the Greek mainland and Asia Minor. Hadrian now invited them to become active members of the empire. By his lengthy travels and benefactions to the people of the region and by the creation of the Panhellenion, Hadrian attempted to create a second center of the Empire. Rome, in the West, was the first center; now a second one, in the East, would draw together the Greek people on both sides of the Aegean Sea. Thus he could accelerate the unification of the empire by focusing on its two most important elements, Romans and Greeks. Hadrian channeled his intentions in a number of ways, including the use of specific iconographical types on the coinage of his reign and religious language and themes in his interactions with the Greeks. In both cases it becomes evident that the Greeks not only understood his messages, but they also reacted in a positive way.

  • An Interpretation of Some Unpublished in Situ and Recorded Rum Seljuk 13Th C. External and Internal Figural Relief Work on the Belkıs (Aspendos) Palace, Antalya
GEPHYRA 8 2011 143–184 Terrance Michael Patrick DUGGAN An interpretation of some unpublished in situ and recorded Rum Seljuk 13th c. external and internal figural relief work on the Belkıs (Aspendos) Palace, Antalya Abstract: This article is divided into four parts. Firstly, it notes the precedent provided by the conversion of the Roman theatre at Bosra in Syria into an Ayyubid Palace, for the conversion of the Roman theater into the Rum Seljuk palace at Belkis–Aspendos and the known extensive use made of Syrian trained architects for important architectural projects by Rum Seljuk Sul- tans in the first half of the 13th c. Secondly, the two bands of Seljuk low relief depictions of fe- lines and a deer on a series of re–carved Roman limestone blocks on the exterior wall by the door leading to the southern köşk–pavilion erected above the parados and upon the lintel over this door, discovered by the author in 2007, extending over a length of nearly 10 m are de- scribed and the deliberate pecking of the surface of these low relief depictions it is suggested, was to provide bonding for applied painted stucco carved relief–work that completed this relief work on the exterior palace facade. The third section describes the painted Seljuk tympanum relief sculpture made of stucco plaster that concealed the Roman relief carving of Dionysus in the pediment of the sceanae frons in the 13th c. A sculptural relief depiction of a nude female figure which was fortunately recorded by Charles Texier early in the 19th c.

Publications that could not be considered here, for reasons of space, will be presented in EBGR 2012. They include two of the most important books of 2011: N. PAPAZARKADAS’ Sacred and Public Land in Ancient Athens, Oxford 2011 and H.S. VERSNEL’s Coping with the Gods: Wayward Readings in Greek Theology, Leiden 2011. 2 A series of new important corpora is included in this issue. Two new IG volumes present the inscriptions of Eastern Lokris (119) and the first part of the inscriptions of Kos (21); the latter corpus is of great significance for the study of Greek religion, as it contains a large number of cult regulations; among the new texts, we single out the ‘sacred law of the tribe of the Elpanoridai’ in Halasarna.

  • Baccio Bandinelli E Il Primo Progetto Di Una Fontana Per Piazza Della Signoria
