REBECCA SCARBROUGH, Field Operations Manager (FOM) Rebecca Scarbrough has over 8 years of experience in facilitation, intercultural training, and project design and management. Prior to embarking on her graduate studies in Sustainable Development at the School for International Training in Washington D.C., Rebecca served in the Philippines as a Children, Youth, & Families Volunteer from 2012-2014 where she focused gender, reproductive, health, maternal & child health, and youth programming & management. After two years of service in , Rebecca was selected to serve as Peace Corps Volunteer Leader at Peace Corps Headquarters in 2015.

It is hot and humid throughout the year in the Philippines. The average temperature is 82 degrees Fahrenheit. 7 ARRIVAL PROCESS

Below you will find step-by-step instructions designed to help you smoothly navigate arrival to the Philippines. Be sure to read through this information carefully. Should you encounter any issues en route to the Philippines or while at the airport, please contact the Field Operations Manager.

Airport Arrival Have a pen on hand and fill in your health declaration checklist, arrival card, and customs declaration form before disembarking the plane; make sure you keep your proof of outgoing flight close. Once off the plane, give the health declaration checklist to the appropriate personnel and head to the immigration lines for foreign passport holders. Welcome to the Philippines!

2 Immigration Give the immigration officer your passport, arrival card, and customs form. Let them know you will be visiting Cavite on vacation. Retrieve your stamped passport and proceed to baggage claim.

Baggage Claim Locate the baggage carousel for your flight. After you have retrieved your luggage, head to customs. If your luggage didn’t arrive or is damaged, file a report with the airline.

Customs If you have nothing to declare, give your customs declaration form to the appropriate personnel and exit the terminal. Have the luggage stub given to you at your point of disembarkation on hand to show the appropriate personnel.

8 YOUR VOLUNTEER MISSION

Every day is different and plans can change quickly at Project Cavite so flexibility is important! To ensure volunteers have a sustainable impact, the activities you will participate in will reflect the current needs of the communities. Your volunteer itinerary will be reviewed with you during orientation. Below are activities that typically take place each week.

MONDAY On Sunday evening, volunteers and staff will make the journey to Manila. You will have the opportunity to lead bedside psychosocial activities for pediatric and adult patients at the Cancer Institute within the Philippine General Hospital in Manila. Donations to the clinics we have partnered with are discouraged as our role is to provide capacity support. Volunteers may, however, bring arts and crafts supplies to support our work at the Philippine General Hospital, as these are always needed.

PATIENT CONFIDENTIALITY Privacy and patient confidentiality are essential to FIMRC’s mission and continued operations. Information relating to patients and their treatment is confidential and must not be distributed or disclosed in any way. It is especially important for all volunteers to exercise caution when using the Internet or social media outlets so as not to communicate any sensitive or confidential information or images.

8 9 ACCOMMODATIONS

FIMRC’S GUESTHOUSE

Accommodation Details You will be staying at FIMRC’s volunteer guesthouse in Mendez, Cavite. There are three bedrooms in the guesthouse. We can accommodate up to eight people. Rooms include minimal storage space and an electric fan. The FOM will do her best to honor the rooming preferences indicated on your enrollment form. Mosquito nets are also available. There is a western-style toilet in the guesthouse. To bathe, you will take bucket baths with cold water (water can be boiled for warm bucket baths). Please note: hotel accommodations may be provided if the number of volunteers on-site exceeds the capacity of the guesthouse. If this occurs, Rebecca will contact you prior to travel with specific details.

Laundry Volunteers can drop off their laundry at the laundromat as needed. Laundry services cost USD $0.50 per kilogram, with a three kilogram minimum. MEALS

Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are provided for the duration of your stay. Meals during excursions, however, are at your own expense. Meals consist of white rice, vegetables, and either fish, chicken, or pork.If you have dietary restrictions, please note this in your enrollment forms and we will make every effort to accommodate your needs.

COMMUNICATION

There is one mobile phone available for volunteers to share. You can use this phone to stay in touch with Rebecca and the FIMRC staff as well as to make and receive international calls, though you will be responsible for purchasing load for the phone should you wish to use it for the latter. Please do not purchase a calling card in the US as it may not be useful aboard. If you lose or break the phone, you will need to replace it. A replacement phone costs $20. Wi-Fi, although slow, is available at the guesthouse. You are welcomed to connect your smartphone and laptop to the network. Please note: should you choose to bring valuable electronics with you, you do so at your own risk. FIMRC is not responsible in the case of loss or theft of personal items. International volunteer experiences are often a time of transformation and internal change. Because you are often forced to deal with new and old situations, without your normal surroundings and support networks, it is important for you to monitor your own emotional and physical well-being.

TIPS FOR STAYING HEALTHY

Upon your arrival in the Philippines, Rebecca will conduct orientation, which will include details on how to stay healthy during your volunteer trip. Below you will find a few tips to begin considering.

What if I miss my flight or am delayed during travel? Will I have internet access?
