Panathinaikos Fc Sevilla Fc PRESS KITS Round of 32 Wednesday, 16 February 2005 - 20:00 (local time) Apostolos Nikolaidis - Athens PANATHINAIKOS FC SEVILLA FC MATCH OFFICIALS Referee Claude Colombo (FRA) Assistant referees Jean-Philippe Izzo (FRA), Alain Taxil (FRA) Fourth official Fredy Fautrel (FRA) UEFA delegate Pierino L.G. Lardi (SUI) MATCH BACKGROUND Athenians set for Sevilla Panathinaikos FC and Sevilla FC may have never been paired together in a competitive tie, but the Athenians are well versed in playing Spanish opposition after their exploits in the 2001/02 UEFA Champions League. In that campaign, the Greens met Primera División opposition on six occasions, starting with first group stage games against RCD Mallorca. Panathinaikos won 2-0 at home and eventually finished atop Group C despite a 1-0 loss to the islanders at Son Moix. The Greek side were paired with Real Madrid CF in the second group stage and fell to a 3-0 loss at the Santiago Bernabéu, where Raúl González scored twice. A point at home, thanks to goals from Nikos Lymperopoulos and Ioannis Goumas, saw them join the eventual winners in the knockout stages at the expense of FC Porto and AC Sparta Praha. A third Spanish challenger, FC Barcelona, lay in wait, yet Panathinaikos showed no fear of reputation in winning the first leg 1-0, Angelos Basinas settling it from the spot. Eight minutes had then passed at Camp Nou when Michael Konstantinou scored a crucial away goal, only for Luis Enrique (23 and 49 minutes) and Javier Saviola (61 minutes) to send Barça through. Panathinaikos's 12 meetings with Spanish sides have yielded two wins, four draws and six defeats. They were eliminated from the UEFA Cup third round in 1999/00 by RC Deportivo La Coruña and in the 2000/01 Champions League lost away to Depor and Valencia CF. However, they were not overcome at home in any of those fixtures and take an unbeaten six-match record into the first leg against Sevilla. Sevilla can garner confidence, though, from a record which has seen them win their three previous ties, all in the UEFA Cup, against Greek clubs. FC PAOK were the losers the first two times: 4-2 on aggregate in the opening round of the 1982/83 UEFA Cup, and on penalties at the same stage eight years later following two scoreless games. The Andalusians completed a hat-trick of successes in the second round of the 1995/96 UEFA Cup with another narrow win, this time against Olympiacos CFP. Juanito's 89th-minute winner settled the first tie and the second went to extra time, when Andrzej Juskowiak put the Greek side ahead from the spot. However, a second spot-kick, converted by Davor Šuker, won the tie for Sevilla. Sevilla's 3-2 home win against AEK Athens FC in the group stage of this season's edition will only serve to raise confidence for the 16 February game in Greece's capital city. 1/8 8:56:04 uefa.com Round of 32 - Wednesday, 16 February 2005 - PRESS KITS PANATHINAIKOS-SEVILLA PLAYERS PROFILES Panathinaikos FC Goalkeepers No Name Nat. Panathinaikos FC v Sevilla FC After their exit from the UEFA Champions League, Panathinaikos ended 2004 in second place in the Alpha Ethniki thanks to consecutive but hard-fought victories against Ergotelis FC, Halkidona FC and PAOK FC. However, the first match of 2005 gave an indication of the problems that were about to beset the Greens as they lost the capital derby 1-0 against AEK Athens FC with the club's former striker Nikolaos Lyberopoulos scoring the only goal. Panathinaikos then saw off OFI Crete FC 5-1 before being held to a goalless draw at Ionikos FC which was followed by a 3-1 loss to Xanthi FC. Another blow for coach Zdenek Scasny came with a 3-1 Greek Cup defeat by AEK. With speculation about Scasny's future rife, former Panathinaikos player Panagiotis Fylakouris oversaw the 5-1 weekend success against Apollon Kalamarias FC. New signing Theofanis Gekas, the league's top scorer with 12 goals, added two more to his tally and also contributed an assist. Apart from Gekas, Panathinaikos have signed Cypriot midfield player Konstantinos Haralambidis (not eligible for the UEFA Cup), Dutch midfielder Nordin Wooter, Brazilian defensive midfielder Anderson da Lima Freitas and left- back Manolis Roubakis. Greek international defender Sotirios Kyrgiakos left for Rangers FC in Scotland. Players registered: Anderson De Lima Freitas, Theofanis Gekas, Nordin Wooter. Players out: Njogu Demba Nyren, Joel Epalle, Konstaninos Chalkias, Sotirios Kyrgiakos, Dumitru Mitu. Saturday's 2-1 win over Villarreal CF may have seen Sevilla climb to third in the Spanish Primera División table but 2005 has not started as well as the previous year finished. A 1-0 victory over Real Madrid CF at the Santiago Bernabéu, secured by Julio Baptista's goal, was a great way to leave 2004 but then came a disappointing 0-0 draw with Getafe CF and a shock 1-0 defeat by Málaga CF. A 2-0 win against Albacete Balompié was followed by more setbacks; a 4-0 defeat by league leaders FC Barcelona and elimination from the Copa del Rey at the quarter-final stage by CA Osasuna. Injury problems have not helped. Right-back Sergio Ramos is nursing a sprained knee, centre-back Pablo Ruiz will miss the rest of the season with a torn cruciate ligament and Jesús Navas has a strained hamstring. Carlos Aranda will come in for Carlitos Domínguez against Panathinaikos and striker Ariza Makukula has returned after a lengthy absence with a knee injury. Renato gained his European passport, thus allowing Adriano Correia to arrive from Coritiba FC. Central defender Óscar Rodríguez has returned after several months on loan in the Segunda División with Real Valladolid. Players registered: Adriano Correia, Diego Capel Trinidad. Players out: Marco Navas González, Kepa Blanco González, Jésus Navas Gonzalez, José Antonio Puerta Pérez, Sergio Ramos García. 4/8 8:56:04 uefa.com Round of 32 - Wednesday, 16 February 2005 - PRESS KITS PANATHINAIKOS-SEVILLA DOMESTIC LEAGUE DETAILS Panathinaikos FC (Ethniki Kategoria) Results Standings Date Match Res R Clubs Pld W D L GF GA Pts 09.01.05 AEK - Panathinaikos 1 - 0 1 Olympiacos 18 12 5 1 33 9 41 16.01.05 Panathinaikos - OFI 5 - 1 2 Panathinaikos 18 11 3 4 33 12 36 23.01.05 Ionikos - Panathinaikos 0 - 0 3 AEK 18 9 8 1 26 14 35 30.01.05 Xanthi - Panathinaikos 3 - 1 4 Xanthi 18 8 6 4 26 20 30 12.02.05 Panathinaikos - Kalamarias 5 - 1 5 Egaleo 18 5 10 3 17 14 25 6 PAOK 18 7 4 7 23 24 25 7 OFI 18 6 5 7 25 26 23 Fixtures 8 Kallithea 18 5 7 6 27 27 22 Date Match 9 Iraklis 18 6 4 8 16 19 22 20.02.05 Egaleo - Panathinaikos 10 Halkidona 18 5 7 6 17 18 22 27.02.05 Panathinaikos - Kerkira 11 Panionios 18 5 6 7 12 16 21 06.03.05 Panionios - Panathinaikos 12 Aris 18 3 10 5 16 20 19 13.03.05 Panathinaikos - Iraklis 13 Ionikos 18 4 6 8 12 23 18 20.03.05 Kallithea - Panathinaikos 14 Ergotelis 18 4 4 10 15 30 16 15 Kalamarias 18 3 6 9 14 29 15 16 Kerkira 18 3 5 10 13 24 14 Sevilla FC (Primera División) Results Standings Date Match Res R Clubs Pld W D L GF GA Pts 15.01.05 Malaga - Sevilla 1 - 0 1 Barcelona 23 17 3 3 47 17 54 23.01.05 Albacete - Sevilla 0 - 2 2 Real Madrid 23 16 2 5 43 17 50 29.01.05 Sevilla

If their fortunes could not have differed more greatly from four years ago, something similar could be said for Spain. • Spain drew 1-1 with Greece in their second outing at UEFA EURO 2004™ before a 1-0 defeat by Portugal then sent them spinning out of the tournament. Luis Aragonés's team, by contrast, made sure of their quarter-final place with a game to spare on Saturday after a last-gasp victory against Sweden. • David Villa's 92nd-minute goal snatched three points against Sweden after Zlatan Ibrahimović (34) had cancelled out Fernando Torres' 15th-minute opener. Villa built on his opening-game exploits against Russia, scoring a hat-trick (20, 44, 75) before Cesc Fàbregas (90+1) registered his first international goal in a 4-1 triumph. • Spain went into the teams' UEFA EURO 2004™ meeting in Porto as favourites and took a 28th-minute lead through Fernando Morientes, but a 66th-minute Angelos Charisteas strike earned Greece a share of the spoils.

  • Nation, Football, and Critical Discourse Analysis
Scoring a hat tri: Nation, football, and critical discourse analysis Mariza Georgalou Lancaster University* Abstract Media sport constitutes a significant arena within whi discourses about national identities are continually articulated (Blain et al. 1993). is study analyses the football commentaries of the mates in whi the Greek national football team competed during Euro 2004. Its focus is on the discursive means that the sportscasters deployed with a view to constructing a national identity that promoted unification and solidarity amongst the audience. In parallel, it explores how the representatives of this national collectivity, i.e., the footballers, their coa and the fans, were depicted. Adopting a discourse-historical framework (Reisigl and Wodak 2001, Wodak et al. 1999), it becomes evident that the sportscasters show great support for their home team forging points of identification with the audience (Blain et al. 1993). In doing so, they confirm the ideological power that media sport has in generating, reinforcing and disseminating national identities. Keywords: discourse analysis, sports, identity 1 More than a mere game By being placed on the ba page of newspapers or at the end of news coverage, sport seems to belong to a world of its own, away from the seriousness aaed to political maers (Beard 1998). Its strong associations with recreation have led several people to claim that sport is outside the essential ingredients that make up culture. However, this is only partly true as apart from the physical relaxation and sense of escaping from reality offered by sport, its competitive nature is inevitably linked to the complex systems of human behavior, namely society (Beard 1998).
