The Communist Use of Jan Hus
283 Not Preaching from the Pulpit, but Marching in the Streets: The communist use of Jan Hus Peter Morée (Prague) This article focuses on the way Hus and the Bohemian Reformation, or more specifically its first phase, the Hussite Revolution, were evaluated in the period of communism in Czechoslovakia between 1948 and 1989. Most attention will be paid to the initial phase of the communist dictatorship and its image and use of the Bohemian reformer and his followers. Communist ideology developed the image of a proto-communist movement with a founder who was essentially not a religious leader but a social protester. However, this historical design was nothing new to the period after the Second World War, but, rather, had its roots in the nineteenth century. In the writings of František Palacký, Marxist historians could find arguments that were of great importance to them. Socialist intellectuals of the second half of the nineteenth century were another source as they also searched for revolutionary predecessors in Bohemian history. And finally, leftist intellectuals prepared the way for the communist interpretation of history during the inter-war period. Zdeněk Nejedlý, an academic played the main role in this and, not surprisingly, became the Minister of Education in the first communist government after the coup of February 1948. Nejedlý managed to combine František Palacký, Tomáš G. Masaryk and Marxism into one system of historical interpretation which would be the basis of the official ideological concept of Czech history between 1948 and 1989. We will be able to conclude that there was no disparity between the historiography of the First (democratic) Czechoslovak Republic and that of the communist dictatorship. -

Never- theless there is much that is curious both in his own fortunes and in the history of his book, no account of which seems yet to have http://ehr.oxfordjournals.org/ l>een published. Moreover, though generally allowed to rank as an authority on the history of his times, his place as such has been left somewhat undefined. It may not be amiss, therefore, to look back at the man and his book, and to advert to the reasons which give it value. A life study of Nicholas Sander might by itself form a tempting subject for a biographer. It is intimately connected with some great phases of English history, materials for it are plentiful, and it at University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign on March 10, 2015 abounds in strong contrasts of scene. The quiet Surroy home and academic peace of Winchester and Oxford change to the splen- dours of Rome, Trent, and Madrid ; these again are varied by diplo- matic missions and ecclesiastical visitations in Prussia, Poland, and Austria, with pauses for literary work among tbe quaint cities of Flanders, while the curtain falls on a peaceful death-scene amid the horrors of a barbarous war. At presont we must only glance at those circumstances in his career which will throw light on his position as an author. Born of a good family, which afterwards suffered much in the cause of religion, Nicholas Sander had made some progress in the course of university preferment at Oxford, when the changes conse- quent on Elizabeth's accession drove him abroad. -

Noted events in his life were: • He worked as a Colour maker. Thomas married Susannah Cowley1 on 22 Apr 1710 in FMH Southwark. Susannah was born in 1683 and died in 1743 at age 60. They had three children: Thomas, Thomas, and Rachel. 3-Thomas Reynolds1 was born in 1712 and died in 1713 at age 1. 3-Thomas Reynolds1,2,3 was born on 22 May 1714 in Southwark, London and died on 22 Mar 1771 in Westminster, London at age 56. Thomas married Mary Foster,1,2 daughter of William Foster and Sarah, on 16 Oct 1733 in Southwark, London. Utraquism As a Commoners' Church
Utraquism as a Commoners’ Church Zdeněk V. David (Washington, D.C.) This article is part of a triptych. I have dealt respectively with the liberal ecclesiology and with the universalist aspirations of the Utraquist Church.1 A third major intellectual legacy of Utraquism – in addition to its liberal‑ ism and universalism – which is discussed in this article was its plebeian character. The downgrading of social privilege would be in harmony with the spirit of the Austro ‑Bohemian Enlightenment, which rediscovered the Utraquist intellectual ambiance in the eighteenth century, as well as with the subsequent liberal political culture of Bohemia.2 In Utraquist Bohemia, cultural and scholarly creativity was carried on by the townspeople and its fruits reflected primarily their concerns and interests. The Utraquist Church by the mid ‑sixteenth century served by and large the urban and rural common folk, while the nobles turned predominantly to Lutheranism with a minority adhering to the Unity of Brethren or to the Roman Curia.3 The religious division reached into the formative period of the Utraquist Church when the towns had provided the main impetus behind the reli‑ gious reforms, while the interest of the nobles was rather lukewarm and their participation hesitant. The character of Utraquism as a commoners’ church fully crystallised during the religious discussions of 1575 around the so ‑called Bohemian Confession, which revealed the contrast between the quasi ‑democratic, plebeian culture of the townspeople, and the nobles’ culture of aristocratic privilege. On one side stood the nobles with their Lutheran (and a few Calvinist) chaplains, the sectar‑ ians (mainly the Unity of Brethren), and the Lutherans of the German enclaves; on the other side stood the bulk of the Czech ‑speaking commoners of Bohemia who remained loyal to Hus and to fifteenth ‑century Utraquism, as defined in basic confessional documents from the Four Articles of Prague (1419) to the Consistory’s critique of the Bohemian Confession in 1575 and in 1609.4 This 1 Zdeněk V. -

Blair Smith Reformed Theological Seminary __________________ In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for ST5250- Ecclesiology and Sacraments __________________ by Matthew Sparks May 13, 2020 SUB UTRAQUE SPECIE: A REFORMED ARGUMENT FOR COMMUNION UNDER BOTH KINDS On July 16, 1562 the Council of Trent decreed, “If any one saith, that, by the precept of God, or by necessity of salvation, all and each of the faithful of Christ ought to receive both species of the most holy sacrament of the Eucharist: let him be anathema.”1 The origins of the debate on partaking both elements of the Supper did not actually begin in the Reformation itself. Instead the theological discussions were debated centuries beforehand and continue still today. There are essentially two positions on the debate: (a) that the Supper must be taken of both elements by all the faithful, or (b) that only one is necessary for the faithful to partake.2 In the following, I will argue that the sacrament of the Lord’s Supper must necessarily be administered in both elements.3 To this end, some historical background of the debate must first be surveyed to find the origins of these doctrinal disagreements. Following the historical survey, I will present the classic Roman Catholic argument against the necessity of communion under both kinds. Saints John Houghton, Robert Lawrence, Augustine Webster, Richard Reynolds SAINT OF THE DAY 04-05-2020 The saints remembered today were the first to suffer martyrdom for refusing to take the oath to the Act of Supremacy of 1534, which declared King Henry VIII supreme head of the Church of England. These were the Carthusian Protomartyrs John Houghton, Robert Lawrence and Augustine Webster and the Brigidine monk Richard Reynolds, all martyred on 4 May 1535. The four are part of the group of the “Forty Holy Martyrs of England and Wales”, religious and lay people, men and women of different social backgrounds but united by the Catholic faith, who offered their lives as witness to Christ at different dates and times (between 1535 and 1679). Paul VI canonized them all together on October 25, 1970. The 40 are only a part of the hundreds of recognized martyrs, including saints and blesseds, who were also victims of the anti-Catholic persecutions that followed the Anglican Schism. After his illegitimate second marriage to Anne Boleyn and the new Act of Succession, Henry VIII tried to obtain the consent of his subjects, starting with those who had the greatest influence on the people. One of his first objectives was the Charterhouse of London, known for the austerity of the monks' lives, where John Houghton was prior. He asked that his community be released from the obligation to swear the oath to the new law, which demanded the annulment of Henry's marriage (never dissolved by the Pope) to Catherine of Aragon. The exoneration was not granted and therefore Houghton was imprisoned in the Tower of London together with his brother Humphrey Middlemore (he too would be martyred). -

Entre ellos destacan representaciones de los martirios de religiosos cartujos en Inglaterra (1535, 1537, 1540) y en los Países Bajos (1572). Se trata de obras escasamente estudiadas por los historiadores del arte español, que también han pasado desapercibidas para los autores de trabajos recientes sobre la cultura martirial de la Europa Moderna. Este artículo propone una revalorización de este ciclo pictórico, recientemente restaurado por el Instituto de Patrimonio Cultural de España (Ministerio de Cultura) y lo analiza en el contexto de la producción martirial europea –visual, oral y escrita– de la Edad Moderna, especulando finalmente sobre el sentido que los cuadros pudieron tener para sus principales destinatarios: los hermanos legos de la cartuja granadina de las primeras décadas del Seiscientos.
