THE LOGO The grey letters stand for the worldwide fraternal society which is subordinate to the Catholic Faith and the content of all publications. The content - the Faith and the patron saint - is more important than the fraternal society. The logo becomes more easily readable due to the difference in grey tones. The black letters stand for the organization itself. The design seeks to express something of the organization’s core values, showing ourselves fully “in the light”. ROCZNIKI HUMANISTYCZNE Volume 67, issue 2 – 2019 SELECTED PAPERS IN ENGLISH DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.18290/rh.2019.68.2-2en MIROSŁAWA HANUSIEWICZ-LAVALLEE * ECHOES OF THE 1580 JESUIT MISSION TO ENGLAND IN EARLY MODERN POLAND At the beginning of 1580, William Allen, one of the most influential Eng- lish religious exiles, and later a cardinal, after long efforts finally persuaded Everard Mercurian, the Superior General of the Society of Jesus, and Pope Gregory XIII to send a Jesuit mission to England. Allen had treated the work on the re-Catholicization of his homeland as his own special and personal vocation. The College in Douai that he had established, and the Seminary that was part of it, went on to educate several hundred priests between 1568 and 1603; fifty-two of them started their missionary work in England before 1578. By the end of Elizabeth I’s reign, the number of those English mis- sionaries from Douai had grown to four hundred and thirty-eight. Beginning with the execution of Rev. Cuthbert Mayne’s in 1577, over the next decades one hundred missionaries died as martyrs.1 For a long time Father Mercurian was unwilling to establish any mission realizing that the Jesuits’ endeavour would be viewed as purely political (es- pecially in the context of the financial and political support offered by the Pope for the ongoing Second Desmond Rebellion, in which Nicholas Sand- ers played a significant role), and therefore would expose the missionaries to even greater dangers than those the diocesan priests had to face. -

Utraquism and Sixteenth ‑Century Anglicanism, an Imperfect Parallel: Bydžovský on Erastianism Zdeněk V. David (Washington D.C.) In my past writings, I have dealt with the similarities between Utraquism and sixteenth‑century Anglicanism as they evolved respectively from the Bohemian and the English Reformation.1 In order to create a context for this article, it seems useful to recall the salient features of the past discus- sion. I have particularly called attention to the Bohemian theologians of the mid‑sixteenth century, especially Bohuslav Bílejovský (ca. 1480–1555) and Pavel Bydžovský (1496–1559), and to the aspects, in which their stand- points may be considered early analogues of Elizabethan Anglicanism. This was, above all, evident from their consolidation of Utraquist theology in the second quarter of the sixteenth century, along the lines of a middle way be- tween Rome and Luther.2 Their via media foreshadowed the features that subsequently became evident in England thanks to the Elizabethan reli- gious Settlement. In England, this transition involved the repeal of Queen Mary’s pre‑Henrician Catholic legislation (1553–58) and the restoration of Henry’s Act of Supremacy in 1558, and the process was crowned by the adop- tion of the Thirty -Nine Articles in 1563. The main theological architects of the Settlement were Bishop John Jewel (1522–1571), and Archbishop Matthew Parker (1504–1575, in office: 1559–1575), followed by Archbishop John Whitgift (ca. 1532–1604, in office: 1583–1604) and the theologian Richard Hooker (ca. 1554–1600).3 1 Most recently in Zdeněk V.
